Feast of Lots Begins March 5th; Is Com¬ monly Called Purim Minor Holiday Is Ushered In With The Roadinc: Of The Book of Esther TYPIFIES PERSECUTION OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE On Monday eveiiing, March'."), Ifl28, the Jewish people will begin'its cclebra- . lion of the Feast of Lots? called in Hc- broiv. Piirini. This festival is a minor holiday. It is ushered in withthe read¬ ing- of thc Book of Esther, and it is followed by great .festivity and joy. Its backgrfiund. whether historical or not,. carries a signal message to every gener¬ ation .'if; Jew.s, and especially to Jewry loday. ¦ .Around the fourth century B. C: E. there lived a mimber of Jews ih the , Provinces that , Pcrjjia had conquered. During the reign df Artaxcrxes ,H, known as Abasuerus in the Book of Es'- tber. Mordecai. a weahhy jew of the capital, city of Siisa.-gained power and' hiflueiicein the court. His beautiful niece, Esther,-was taken into the king's bareni, crtnyned (pieen. and made the fa¬ vorite of Vhe palace. At tbat time Arta-. xerxcs II raised Hainan in rank to the highest office in the Persian court. This new Prime Minister bore a' personal grudge against Mordecai. He sought to ¦ vent his spleen upon him,.- He decided to proclaim a general massacre of all Jews and thereby make Mordecai suffer. But for .such an edict he had to obtain the permission of the king. , ¦ And" one, day Haman presented him¬ self to. the king and, discussed.with him- DISTRICT SISTERHOOD MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE ON TUESDAY, MARCH GTH A distriel ine^'ting at which thc Rose E. H you want to spend an eve¬ ning full of fun and frolic just come to Si-honlbals, Sunday, March 1, at K p. in the internal, conditions of the Persian Orovinces., He saw tbat'the king feared for the security of -his widely-spread; dominion.>i, and he took advantage of-it. He accused the Jewisli people of being a- menace to the unity of the .Empire. He told tl;e king that the Jews were "scattered and dispersed.throughout the land, distinct in their lawS- from all other peoples, and refusing to obey the laws of the king." Artaxcrxes Hi delighted by , the devotion of his Prime Minister to. the. welfare of; the Persian dominions, said to him, "Do unto the people as-it' .seemeth good to thee." The Jews of Susa .fasted and prayed in deadly fear. Mordecai, conveyed the fateful edict to Esther. He bade her go to the king and beseech him to spare the life, of her people. Esther prepared a baiKiiict to which she invited her royal spou.se and; Haman. At the feast she pleaded witli the king saying, "Behold, we are sold, I and my people, tb be utterly destroyed!" The king grew furi¬ ous. Haman had previously craftily avoided to mention t^e name of the peo¬ ple he sought to wipe, out. To assuage his wrath the king ordered the hanging of Haman. To save Esther's people, he issued an act authorizing the Jews to organize for self-defense. And to com¬ memorate the deliverance of the Jewish people from the hands of Haman the festival of Purim was iiistitutedi- This story is important because it typifies the persecutions that the Jewish people suffered during the last twp thou¬ sand years. In every age and era those who,' bctausc of personal prejudices ' against certain individual Jews, condemn the whole people. But Jewry cannot be destroyed. In every generation there rise up brave spirits within the Jewish people who Aght such evil creeds and.frustrate them. This at once is the message of the feast of Purim to Jewry today. ' Don't fail to attend the IvKe- yab Purim Ball at Memorial Hall, Wednesday Eve., March 7.
