NEW YORK.—Dr. Stephen S- Wise, president of the Athcricari Jewish Con¬ gress, resigned from the Administrative and the Executive Committees of the Zionist Oi^ganization of America, it was learncii following the meeting on Wed¬ nesday night of the .Administrative Com¬ mittee of the Zionist Organization, of America. * The Jewish Daily Bulletin learns that the resignation was accepted by thc Com¬ mittee with regret. It was also, disclosed that upon the ar¬ rival of Pr. Weizmann in the United States, the president of the World Zion¬ ist Organization attempted to confer with Dr. Wise and tha^ a tentative appointment had been made for a meeting bctwecii them.: ; The appointinent, however, was cancelled after several days when Dr. Wise, in a letter > to Dr. Weizmann de¬ clared, that,.a conference at the present moment would serve no,purpose. . Decline'to Commeiit'. . When asked yesterday by the . repre¬ sentative of; the Jewish Daily Bnlletin, Dr. Wise declined tu comment on his step,' but stated that he will make a statement "at the'proper time and the proper place.''. The ofiici of the Free. Synagogue made public the following text of Dr. Wise's lettei- of resignation addressed to Mr. Lipsky: '^ ' "It is with the. deepest regret that;] find myself upder the necessity of with¬ drawing from raembership in the ExecU; tivcrarid Administrative Committees of the Zionist Organizations of America. ", Stephen S, Wise^" LipskyV Stateriient ;' A statement issued by Louis Lipsky, President.of the Zionist Organization of America, ¦ read : , ' "The resignation of Dr. Wise came to us as a surprise,. He had given no inti- ¦riiatioji'of his intention toircsign. Ontbe contrary. Dr. VVise has been serving the fcausc with his usuar devotion during thc entire winter, having appeared at many banquets Mri the interest .of the United Palestine Appeal. A number of lead¬ ing problems of the Zionist movement have been dealt with in accordance with what we assumed to be Dr. Wise's views. It is true that Dr:-Wise has frequently expressed his opposition tb. the Jewish Agency in - the interest 'of which Dr. Chaim Weizmann is now in the United States. But with regard to .the Jewish Agency Dr. Wise had given his consent to the policy of support for the Jewish Agency, for which the American Zionist Organizatioii stands. "Dr. Wise lias taken occasion recently to criticize thc British Government for RUMMAGE SALE TO BE CONDUCTED BY T. L SISTERHOOD The Tifereth Israel Sisterhood of the East Broad Street Temple will conduct a rummage sale the latter part of April. Get your bundles . ready and call Mrs. Tobias Polster, WA, i)207, or^Mrs. M. N. Siegel, 4'R. 0110, and Ihey will gladly call for same. Time and plave of this ruriima^e sale will be announced in the forthcoming issue of the Chronicle. its lack of co-operation in the upbuilding of tbc Jewish National Home. . The American Z.ionist Administration has backed up Dr. Wise's position in Ibis connection. When I was in Ottawa re¬ cently and met Colonial Secretary Amery, I presented a detailed statement of the objections that we had to a number ^of things that were being done in Palestine by the government. Dr. . Wise had agreed to go with me to Ottawa in order to present his grievances, but subsequent¬ ly wrote a letter in which he declined to take part in such a conference, although the date of the conference had been fixed at his: suggestion; ."We regret exceedingly that after sev¬ eral years of active co-operation with the present Ainerican Zionist administration, Dr. Wise has seen fiti.without discussion and without an attempt to.adjust differ¬ ences to tender his resignation at this difTicidt time, through' which we arc .emerging witii gratifying success. There was nothing for our Admi^i ist rati ve Com¬ mittee- to do but accept his resignation with regret." MorriBon'B Uemarks 'Tlie Zionist Organization also made public ah .excerpt from the minutes of the Administrative Comriiittee containing the rjemarks of Isidore D. Morrison, \<'ho inoved the licceptaiicc of Dr. Wise's resr ignation. Mr. Morrison was quoted as follows:, ,; "I move that the resignation of. Dr. Wise be accepted with regret. In making this motion. I confess that I ain dcepVv pained, both personally and as a member of the present Zionist adininistration, that a situation has arisen which impels Dr. Wise to sever Jiis official relations with the Zionist Administration. : Dr. :Wise and! have collaborated in Zionist work for nearly thirty:¦ years.'' Neither of, us has at all times'becii in eh-ti^e agreeinerit with the policies .of the various, subdivi^ sions of Zionist activities for it is in the iiaturC of things that a, movement con¬ ducted on a deriibcratic basis the way our riibvement is conducted, cannot. always conforin to. the ideas bf individuals no matter how salutary and sound these ideas may be, but,I,have always: felt, and I hoped that Dr. Wise,agreed with me, that if changes and reforms are needed, the way to bring these results about is by agitating'and arguing from within the organization and not criticizing from without. . ; . ;; One of the pillars , '"For niany years, pr* Wise has been one of the pillars of organized Zion¬ ism in this country; his advice was lis¬ tened to with respect and his suggestions were always carried oiit whenever pos¬ sible: Dr. Wise gives no clear or suc¬ cinct reason for his resignation and we have no-right to inquire into his motives, since he does not choose to reveal them. T can say .for niyself and for riiy col¬ leagues of this Board tliat we gratefully appreciate the invaluable services which Dr. Wise has rendered to the cause of upbuilding the Jewish National Home arid that we deeply regret that at this crucial stage of Zionist Iiistory he, sees fit to sever his relations with an organi¬ zation which he worked so hard to build NEW YORK PUBLIC SCHOOLS to BE CLOSED FIRST DAY PESACH .New York^Upon tbc representation o i Uabbi Dr. Bernard Drachman and Rabbi Herbert S. A number of lead¬ ing problems of the Zionist movement have been dealt with in accordance with what we assumed to be Dr. Wise's views. When I was in Ottawa re¬ cently and met Colonial Secretary Amery, I presented a detailed statement of the objections that we had to a number ^of things that were being done in Palestine by the government. Dr. . Wise had agreed to go with me to Ottawa in order to present his grievances, but subsequent¬ ly wrote a letter in which he declined to take part in such a conference, although the date of the conference had been fixed at his: suggestion;

I confess that I ain dcepVv pained, both personally and as a member of the present Zionist adininistration, that a situation has arisen which impels Dr. Wise to sever Jiis official relations with the Zionist Administration. : Dr. :Wise and! have collaborated in Zionist work for nearly thirty:¦ years.'' Neither of, us has at all times'becii in eh-ti^e agreeinerit with the policies .of the various, subdivi^ sions of Zionist activities for it is in the iiaturC of things that a, movement con¬ ducted on a deriibcratic basis the way our riibvement is conducted, cannot. always conforin to. the ideas bf individuals no matter how salutary and sound these ideas may be, but,I,have always: felt, and I hoped that Dr. Wise,agreed with me, that if changes and reforms are needed, the way to bring these results about is by agitating'and arguing from within the organization and not criticizing from without. . ; . ;;
