Mehlman To Address
French Anti-Semitism
Prof. Jeffrey Mehlman of
Boston University will give
an address entitled "Anti-
Semitism in France: A Retrospective View" on Friday,
April 27, at 3 p.m., in the
South Terrace Room of the
Ohio Union on The Ohio State
University campus. The lecture is open to the public,
and those in attendance are
invited to a reception in
honor of Prof. Mehlman following the lecture.
Prof. Mehlman is the author
of several books: "Legacies of
Anti-Semitism" : (1983;
French, Japanese trans.);
"Revolution and Repetition:
Marx/Hugo/Balzac"; (1977),
and, "A Structural Study of
Autobiography'' (1974)7" He
has written numerous articles
on Freud,"! psychoanalysis;
Blanchot.Cacan and Derrida
and is the'translator of J.E.
Breden's "The Affair: The
Case of Alfred Dreyfuss"
(1986) and E. Rudinesco's "A
History of Psychoanalysis in
France" (forthcoming).

Esther Sandler was recently honored by her fellow
Heritage Tower residents and the Heritage Village
Board of Trustees upon her naturalization as a U.S.
citizen.

cholesterols and salt in the
JCCs Traditional Family
Cookbook to be printed later
in 1990.
A "Health Day" for senior
adults will be co-sponsored
"by Mount Carmel Health and
the JCC starting this summer. Many mental health issues will also be addressed
for senior adults.

A Soviet medical school
graduate, Sandler worked
for many years in a Russian
laboratory as a virologist
and as a microbiologist. She
explained that life in Russia
is not easy. Wages are'lbw
and living quarters are
cramped. In spite of the un-
dersirable conditions, it was
not the economical reasons
for which her family left; it
was the political system.
Sandler said,' 'In Russia it
is hard to bear the dictatorship when you must do as
you are told and there is anti-
Semitism. In spite of how
hard you work they always
treated Jewish as a people of
a second kind." In America,
she noted, the law ensures
all people are treated
equally arid given equal privileges and opportunities. The
federal and local governments protect the welfare of.
the needy and give public assistance to those who cannot
buy food,or pay rent.' "In
America the people are kind-
hearted, friendly and smiling. In Russia, when some-

Soviet President Mikhail
Gorbachev, addressing' a
meeting of the Communist
Youth League in Moscow,
has made what is believed to
be his first public statement
condemning anti-Semitism.
Leaders of Soviet Jewry
advocacy groups responded
to the long-awaited statement in mixed fashion, some
welcoming it, but others saying it minimized or only partially addressed the problem.
Gorbachev's remark came
quietly, in response to a
question posed April 11 in
Moscow at the 21st annual
congress of Komsomol, the
Communist youth movement
of the Soviet Union.
Asked what measures he
intended to take in response
to "abnormal conditions of

Family Services' (JFS) annual meeting will be held
May 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the
Leo Yassenoff Jewish Community Center.
The evening will be a celebration of JFS' years of commitment to central Ohio.

to community leaders for
special recognition for their
services to central Ohio fam

the Janice Ballas Award, the
H.E.L.P. Award (Higher Education Loan Program), the

major part of JFS' work this
year,"  said   Wasserstrom.

nationalism, chauvinism,
anti-Semitism or any other
'isms' to occur.
"It is necessary to take the
- part of harmonizing inter-
ethnic relations, to set up
legal, economic and social
prerequisites for people of
all ethnic groups," wherever
they live, he said. "There is
no other way that I know of."

Dubinin in Washington and
with high-level Soviet officials in Moscow.
Dubinin said that Tass, the
Soviet news agency, distributed the statement nation-
wide.
Va'ad Members Meet
With PLO Delegation
NEW YORK (JTA) -
Members of the Va'ad, the
umbrella body of Soviet Jewish institutions, took part-
last week in a roundtable discussion with a Palestinian
delegation that included
Nabil Amro, the Palestine
Liberation Organization's
Moscow representative and
Palestinian leader Faisal
Husseini.
The seminar, which took
place April 16 in Moscow, focused on Soviet Jewish immigration to Israel. It was
hosted by Al-Hiyat, a London
Arabic-language newspaper,

Helen Thomas, White
House bureau chief, will be
the guest speaker, discussing "Covering the White
House from Kennedy to
Bush." Thomas, a native of
Kentucky, was raised in Detroit and graduated from
Wayne State University. She
joined the UPI and Washington Press Corps in 1941. She
began covering the White
House during President Kennedy's administration.

will be commemorating
Yom Haatzmaut (Israel's
Independence Day) with a
series of programs during
the week of April 30 through
May 4. The programs will
kick off with a pafade
through the campus leading
to a night of Israeli dancing
on Monday, April 30* at 7
p.m. at the Hillel Foundation. Students will be hosting
an Israeli cafe on Tuesday,
May 1, at 5:30 p.m. The week
will culminate with a lecture
by John Rothman on "Levels
of Conflict in the Middle
East" on Friday, May 4, at
8:30 p.m. The lecture will
discuss the Superpower conflict, the relationship between Israel and the Arab
nations and the Palestinian-
Arab question as well as
methods of dealing with
these three levels of conflict.
All events will be occurring at the Hillel Foundation on 46 East 16th Ave.
Rothman is a political and
foreign policy consultant
specializing in Middle East
and Soviet Affairs. He has
served as president of the
North Pacific Region of the
Zionist  Organization  of
America and currently
serves on its. National Executive Committee. He is a
member of the National
Board of Trustees of the
American Zionist Youth
Foundation. In December-
1982, Rothman was a delegate to the 30th World Zionist
Congress in Jerusalem.
Rothman currently serves
as president of the Bay Area
Council for Soviet Jews and
is a past chairman of the Soviet Jewry Commission of
the Jewish Community Relations Council.
A frequent lecturer on
American politics and the
Presidency, Rothman has
been called by Richard Norton Smith in his biography of
Thomas E. Dewey, "a
scholar of modern Republi'
canism." Rothman has
worked on the staffs of
Richard Nixon and Senator
Frank Church, among
others.
