Community turns out for rally
By Judith Franklin
Managing Editor
Last Sunday, Sept. 30, was
a day of which the Columbus
Jewish community can be
justly proud. If the number
of people attending the Columbus Jewish Federation
sponsored "Stand Up For
freedom" Rally at the Leo
Yassenoff Jewish Community Center was any indication
of the support the conjununi-
ty is giving to Operation
Exodus, the Soviet Jewry
rescue and resettlement effort, then Columbus should
encounter no difficulty in
reaching or even surpassing
fife goal.
„ As Governor Richard Celeste told the thousands gathered on the grounds of the
JCC, "You are doing whatno
one else in the country is doing. The example you set is
unmatched from sea to shining seaT"
This seemed to be the consensus. Longtime City Councilman MJD. Portman said,
"This is a great event. It is
very commendable that we
all demonstrate support for
such a vital cause. I think if
American J^wry doesn't
take the lead, nobody else
will."
And Rabbi David Stavsky,
of Beth Jacob Congregation,
noted, "The solidarity of the
Jewish community is what
makes Columbus strong and
unique." ^
In addition to Governor
Celeste and his wife, Dag-
mar, other local dignitaries
attending the Rally included; State Rep. Otto Beatty
Jr.; Judith Brachman; State
Sen. Eugene Brans tool;
Jo Ann Davidson, state representative; City Councilman Ben Espy; Michael
Gelpi; City Councilman Tom
Kaplin, Jr.; City Council
President Cynthia Lazarus;
Richard Pfeiffer, Jr., state
senator; Councilman M.D.
Portman; Arlene Shoemaker, council member;
William Schuck, state representative; Gubernatorial
Candidate George Voinovich
and his wife, Janet; Eugene
Watts, state senator, and Les
Wright, city council member.
According to Leslie Wexner, co-chairman with Irving
Schottenstein of the Opera-*
tion Exodus Campaign,
"The exodus of Soviet Jewry
is perhaps the most significant event in Jewish history,
biblical or modern." In Ids
address to the crowd, he continued, "Cleariy we will see
the immigration of over 1
million people in the next
three years. We must be
wise enough to understand
this moment. We must be
wise enough to support each
other."
Schottenstein expressed
similar sentiments, asking,
"When else in your lifetime
will you get a chance to save
a nation? We want not only
your money but your time'.1-'
