NEWEST PHENOMENON IN MUSIC TODAY
'Shlock Rock9 coming to Agudas Achim
"I walked into the concert
hall' and completely overwhelmed by what I saw. Teenagers and adults alike all singing and dancing together and
this was even before the band
had tafeen to the stage/ The
songs they sang sounded .
familiar but somehow the
words seemed di//erent.
Regular pop songs — but they
had new words for them. I felt
quite disoriented. I felt 1 was
in a Mid-West American town
during the fifties or early sixties and I wondered: what was
all of the commotion about?
The answer was one Lenny
Solomon and his band
"SHLOCK ROCK" - reprinted from a "Shlock Rock" review.
It's this newest phenomenon
in music today, according to
organizers from Agudas
Achim Synagogue who say
they are proud to be bringing
the group to Columbus in just
two days. The Agudas Achim
sanctuary will be the scene of
this "rock" concert on Saturday evening, Feb. 9, at 7:45
p.m.
More ^han just a catchy
name, Sclock Rock appeals to
all ages, melding together
Jewish values and popular
rock and roll music, they explain.
Although mainly directed
towards Jewish youth, Sclock
Rock's music has relevance
and meaning for all concert
goers, from toddler to senior
citizens. Each of the rock and
roll adaptations, parodies,
raps and original arrangements is not only fun, but
helps build Jewish pride, they
note.
"The group's reputation is
that of entertainment and education, a new form of Jewish
awareness through songs that
everyone knows," explains
Rabbi Hillel Fox, Agudas
Actum youth services director, who is spearheading the
planning for .Shlock Rock's
central Ohio debut.
"It's the building of that
same Jewish awareness and
pride which is a common goal
shared by all the local Jewish
youth groups in Columbus,"
he added. "Therefore, we are
pleased that the Agudas
Achim Youth Services Committee chose to sponsor the
concert in cooperation with
BINYAN, the Council of Columbus Jewish Youth
Groups."
With this in mind, the planning committee, chaired by
Peggy Ginsburg, Sarita Moss
and Lauri Zofan, has chosen
the theme "One Heart, One.
Soul, One Beat" and has
dubbed the Shlock Rock event
a "Unity Concert," with the
hope of bringing all community members, young, old, families, teens and older adults, together for an evening of fun,
frolic, entertainment and enlightenment.
"All of us, as Americans;
and Jews, have been touched
and concerned oyer world
events during the last few
weeks. Feb. 9 will offer us another unique opportunity to
join together in spirit, celebrating our love for Judaism
and its ideals," the co-chairs
explain.
"We have ail been saddened
by the Gulf Crisis, as United
States citizens and committed
Jews. Participating in the
Shlock Rock concert will be a
positive reminder for each of
us of those Jewish values
which make us devoted
Americans and Zionists," the
add.
In order to avoid a "sold-
out" disappointment, the committee encourages members
to take advantage of advance
ticket sales. Tickets, at $7.50
for adults, $3 for senior citizens, $5 for students with an
I.D. and $3 for children, 12 and
under, are on sale at the Agudas Achom Synagogue, Martin's Kosher Foods, Kosher.
Buckeye and OSU Hillel.
