JOHN ROACH STRATON'S CHALLENGE TO DEBATE RABBI NEWMAN IS DECLINED
In Open Letter Noted Pulpiteer of San Francisco De¬ nounces New York Baptist Preacher---Dcplores Latter's Misuse of the Bible—Points Out Straton*s Failure To Con¬ vince New Yorkers of His Views, '
SA>I FRANClSCO.—Revercd John Roach Straton, Pastor the First Cal¬ vary Baptist Church of New York City, <luriiif; his recent visit to California, ad¬ dressed a challenge to Rabbi Louis I. Newman, of Temple Emanu-El, San Francisco, to- meet him, in dclxile on the incompatibility of Evolution and Religion. The following is Rabbi Newman's reply: "My Dear Doctor Straton:
. "In reply to your letter of February 15th, permit mc to state the reasons why r decline to meet you in public debate.
"Eleven to nothing rather than, one Xo one is the true ratio of Pro-Evolution to Anti-Evolution views in the State of California. , In 1927 the so-called Heisingcr Anti-Evolution Bill was defeated by the Committee on Education of the Cali¬ fornia State Legislature by a.vote of 11 to 0, Moreover, you may b(J interested to know that In addition to the President of the Science League Of America, three clergymen ^appeared at the hearing to urge the de£ea.t of the measure. A debate with you would . doubtless imply to you that Pro-Evolution and Anti- Evolution sentiments ih California stand On an equal plane. They do not. ¦ Eleven to nothing is the true ratio, V . -
"Your attack on the teaching of science iii the name of religion, and your statement "that Evolution aiid Christianity are incompatible are bringing ridicule and disrepute upon the great religion of which you profess to be a spokesman. You are a preacher of thc Baptist denomination.. I was born in Rhode Island* a commonwealth founiled by. an illustrious Baptist, Roger Williams. I was. a student; for. four years ^t Broivn University, and for four years I sat at the feci of-President Williams H. P. Eauncc, ^Baptist minister-for whom T have the highest reverence. At. chapel services at Brown University 1 first heard Rev. Harry Emerson Fosdick, another' splendid Baptist, preach to -the student body. At Brown University Qiapet I. first heard Prof. Carruth's great poieni: "Each In ftis Own Tdnguc," in which, as you doubtless know, the lines occur: "Some Call It Evolution; Others Call It God." You are preaching at San Jose, a few mile,5afr*om Leland Stanford University, where for rainy years-Prof. Carruth taught his students there was complete concordance between Evolution and re¬ ligion. The people pf California .should know that you are not a genuine rep¬ resentative of the progressive and fbrward7look,iiig inovement in the Baptist denomination of this country.-
"Your use of the Bible as a weapon against Evolution and the teaching of science is, doing the cause of the Bible grave injury. As a member ;of the people which gave the Bible to mankind I protest against your misuse and rnis- interpretation of it. The'early chapters of. Genesis constitute, a majestic reh-; gious poem, and arc not to be set up in. antithesis to the evidence of modern science. To affirm, this antithesis is to lead the public astray, to alienate men and women of intelligence from the Bible, and to promote rather tljari to over¬ come unbelief. Your preachment betrays, lack of knowledge not only of modern science, but also lack of acquaintance with the broad domain of Biblical criticism and ignorance' of the Bible in the original Hebrew. V '
"In New York City you have been unable to mobilize piiblic sentiment against the. teachitiB of' evolution, and science. Yqih". spee, ches in. California will make just as little: impression. upon our free and liberable commonwealth. .-
"I call upon you, to, refrain from affirming .inaccurate contradictions between science and religion in the name of the Bible. Ybu are injuring your own de¬ nomination and the great religion of Christianity. You are bringing contempt upon tlieBible. You are conducting a propaganda, of ighorance, prejudice and hate.
"I decline to lend myself to any effort to give weight to. your, opinions before tlie people of California:"

NEW YORK.—The economic crisis | in Palestine is disappearing and the.Jew¬ ish upbuilding viioi-k in the country is on the eve of a new, period of activity.
The day, when the Jewish \ Agency, which is to unite Zionists and non-Zion- ists in the Palestine upbuilding work, will be created is not distant.
.\merican Jews are beginning'to lose the leadership tbey held in the past dec¬ ade in providing thc financial means for the Palestine- work through the Zionist itmd raising institutions, since contribu¬ tions to the Palestine funds in European countries aiid in South Africa arc in¬ creasing, making the contribution of American Jews smaller in proportion. ¦
With the.^e. statements Dr. Chaim Weizmann, president of the World Zioiir' ist Organization, arrived in New York on his fifth Visit to the Urihed States!
Shortly after his arrival, Felix M. -Warhurg, chairman of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and one. of the Anierican Commissioners, of the Jewish Agency Survey Commission, called at the Hotel Coriimodore to wel¬ come the Zionist leader.
Special. Interview
¦In a special. interview with the , rep¬ resentative of the "Jewish, Daily Bulle¬ tin,'' pr. Weizmann said that .in addition to stimulating activities-of the Palestine fund-raising agency he intended to con¬ clude .final negotiations for the Jewish Agency. He reported that practically all the investigators who were j?ent lo Palestine, by; the Survey Commission have cortipleted their research work and that their reports arc in. While he is in this -Country, Dr.AVeizmann'will ar¬ range for a meeting of the Agency Coni- niissiqners which include Sir Alfred Mond,, Felix Warburg, Lee K. Frankel and Dr. .Oscar Wassermann.
Dr. Weizmann was! emphatic in de- clariiig that the' Jewish Agency nego¬ tiations Were being carried to their con¬ clusion. ."The Jewish Agency is a fact, and nothing has occurred since the Sur¬ vey Comhiission was decided upon to alter the plajis for. the Agency. During my visit here the Agency' will be es¬ tablished, according to present, arrange¬ ments." .' ,¦ ,
¦No Reason
Commenting upon the continued, talk of a crisis , iri Palestine, Dr. Weizmann stated that there was no reason to speak of Such a condition atthe present time. "According to the latest reports ^vhich I have received from the Homeland, the sitriation is steadily improving.. If only we would, have carried on our, part of the budget, there would have been no sign of stringency whatever in Palestine. With $oO,000 a month more from the United States, the difficult conditions would have been entirely liquidated."
Dr. Weizmann stated that the Zion¬
ists of Europe arc taking an increasingly active part in the rebuilding of the Homeland, particularly from a financial' poiiit of view. "Amenca is not doing its share," DrI Weizmann declared. '-The varioius countries ^ of Europe hayC done nibre. proportionately, for Palestine'than thi- United Slates..
Is Bcfn^ Strengthened "Zionism.'in Europe is being' strerigth- enedi The first indication of that rc- newwl vigor, is the substantial increase in the receipts of the Keren Hayesod in England.. Poland, Roumania, and, other countries. .The most important growth in. Zionist sentiment ,is* taking place in ' South Africa, however, where the fe- , ccipts of the Keren Hayesod have av¬ eraged one pound per..person. Sixty,

thousand pounds is reported from 'a territory- with a Jewish population of sixty thousand. ; ,
"Naturally, however| the largest ¦ amount of support for the upbuilding 6i Palestine must come from the United States, because that country has the largest Jewish population, economically speaking. Upon the Jews of .America, at the present time,, depends_th^ rate of Palesiinv's progress." Unfortunately^, however, American Jews have not done everything, that was expected of them.""
The Oppositional Squabbles
Answering the, question for his opinr ion on the oppositional squabbles of cer¬ tain elements.in the Zionist Organization, Dr. Weizmann stated:; 'Tt was thought that after the Zionist Congress work for the upbuilding of Palestine woiild take on hew impetus in the United States, because, the program presented by,the American delegation at Basle vtras lalrgely accepted. It was on that basis, fur¬ thermore, :, that the executive made its plans, i now understand that there has , been some criticism'.of the adrninistra- tion in this country.
