"Grandma," a love- able daredevil whose age is upwards of 100, is the creation of consummate clown Barry Lubin. Lubin was born in Atlantic City, N.J., 38 years ago. "Grandma" was born at Clown College in Venice, Fla., from which Lubin graduated in 1975. Prior to joining The Big Apple Circus, Lubin clowned for five years with Ringling Bros, and Bamum & Bailey Circus, where he met and married showgirl Roberta Culbert. Since 1982, "Grandma" has become the signature performer of The Big Apple Circus. In New York when children ask to visit "Grandma" for the holidays, they are re ferring to the 5-foot clown with the popcorn box and the dust- buster who breakdances. Barry and "Bert" Lubin live and travel with the Circus year-round. Their 35-foot trailer is also home to daughters Danielle, six, and Emily, six months, and cats Flipper and Rover. During the winter months, they live in their trailer at the circus' off-season quarters in Brooklyn. Danielle attends the Circus' one-ring schoolhouse and has a cameo appearance with her dad in the current show. Although the rigors of the lifestyle and heavy performance schedule can get to Lubin, he finds the rewards worth it, "All circus performers want to work in The Big Apple Circus becaue of its emphasis on skill and artistry and because of the closeness with the audience," he says, adding, "I love being a circus clown, but please don't tell my mother. She still thinks I go to dental school." The Big Apple Circus was founded in 1977 by Paul Binder, a Brooklyn-born Jew. Each year Binder conceives and directs an all-new production centered around a theme. In last year's "Grandma Goes West," "Grandma" led Columbus circus-goers on a fun- filled trip to the Wild West of yesteryear. In this year's "Ballerinas, Horses & Clowns ... The Golden Age," "Grandma's" trunk of circus memorabilia launches a journey back to the grand Belle Epoque circuses of Europe from 1850-1914. Hailed by Time Magazine as "breathtaking and witty," "Ballerinas, Horses & Clowns" is set amid the atmosphere of a turn-of-ihe-century circus amphitheatre and features an original score and costumes inspired by Toulouse-Lautrec, The one-ring show stars world-class circus artists including the legendary Panta- leenkos aerialists (the first Soviet act to appear with an American circus); the Williams family, including five- year-old Stormy and two- year-old Skye dancing with pachyderm pals Anna -May and Ned, plus ballerinas on horseback, acrobats, tight- wire tumblers *, cavorting clowns, stallions soaring over ponies and performing pigs. The Big Apple Circus will perform in the Columbus area for one week only at Wendy's International Headquarters, 4288 W. Dublin-Granville Rd. in Dublin, Ohio, today through June 27. Tickets for all performances are available through Ticketmaster outlets including select Video Townes or charge by phone, 431-3600. Tickets range in price from $6 to $16. Information Phone Line is 442-2138.
