The Work of the Jewish Music Centre
By Rabbi Bernard S. Raskas
As we celebrate Jewish Music Month, it is important to be
aware of the work of the Jewish Music Research Centre.
The institution is located in the
Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem. It is
also a department of The Hebrew University.
The purpose of the Centre is
twofold. The first is the recording of Jewish and some
non-Jewish musical traditions
in Israel. The National Sound
Archives now. contain 250,000
recordings. Jews have come
to Israel from a 100 different
cultures, ranging from Austria and Australia to Yemen
and Yugoslavia. Also included
are recordings made of the
Samaritan, Karaite, Muslim
(including Bedouin) and
Christian traditions.
The recordings are presently centered on preserving of
"tish" melodies. Hassidic
communities are cooperating
in preserving visits to courts
of Admorim, leading rabbis,
and hillalot commemorating
the anniversary of the death of
a- prominent rabbi. The
liturgical music of the Jews of
Ethiopia is also a prime focus
and is being done with the cooperation of Kes (priest-rabbi) Avraham.
The second function of the
Jewish Music Research Centre is to assemble collections
of written music of Jews. In
this vein the A nthology of Hassidic Music by Vanaver and
the collection with tape of
Judeo-Spanish Songs for the
Life Cycle by Susan Weich-
Shanak are two fine examples. The latter includes
songs for birth, bar-bat mitz
vah, courtship, marriage,
death and mourning dirges,
heard around the year 1492.
However, most valuable to
the Jewish Music Centre is the
recently published Hebrew
