Temple Israel dedicates Holocaust Torah
"We would assemble in the
darkness. To light a candle
there, or even a match, would
have brought immediate disaster upon us. We spoke about
matters of the spirit and eternal questins, about God, about
Jews in the world, about the
eternity of Israel In the midst
of darkness, I sensed light in
the unlit room, the light of
Torah."
Rabbi Leo Baeckk
Thereslenstadt
These were the words repeated by Rabbi Bradley
Bleefeld, senior rabbi at Temple Israel, at the opening of
the March 13 ceremony which
marked the dedication of a
Holocaust. Torah by the Reform congregation.
The sacred scroll, personally carried to Columbus from
London, by the rabbi and several congregants, was one of
the 1,564 Czech Memorial
Scrolls that were collected by
the Nazis to be part of a collection of Jewish religious objects destined for a museum
that would display artifacts of
a destroyed Jewish race. Now
these scrolls are housed in the
Memorial Scrolls Trust in
Westminster Synagogue in
London, England and are
available for permanent loan
to institutions such as synagogues, libraries and museums for the purpose of display, memorial and/or education.
Over 500 people welcomed
the Torah to Temple Israel as
it was held under a Chuppah
and carried into the sanctuary
for the first time. In symbolic
memory of the six million
Jews destroyed in the Holocaust, congregants and members of the broader community marched around the sanctuary amidst singing and celebration;
Students in grades seven
through twelve read the worship liturgy arranged by Can
tor Vicki Axe. A specially prepared service supplement for
Shabbat Zachor, which contained quotes from Holocaust
survivors, added to the service.
The Czech Memorial Scroll
will be displayed in Temple Israel's lobby in a specially designed case.
"We are honored to be given
the opportunity to permanently showcase one of these precious holy objects at Temple
Israel," said Rabbi Bleefeld.
"This scroll will come alive
again in our house of worship.
It will stand open and ready to
refute the lie that the Holocaust never happened. It will
bear silent witness to the awful truth that humanity holds
the blessing or the curse in its
own hands."
Rabbi Bleefeld spoke of the
importance of memory and
observed that no one has red
from this Torah nor studied
from it in over 50 years. "Because those tragic souls are no
longer amongst the living, it is
up to our and future generations to keep Torah alive and
vibrant," Rabbi Bleefeld said.
Carrying Temple Israel's
eight Sifre Torah, guided
around the sanctuary by Rabbi Steven Engel, behind the
Holocaust Torah in eight
Hakafot or processions were
Presidents Fred Summer,
Ray Wells and Jim Brenner.
Board members included
Jody Scheiman, Robert
Garek, Henry Epstein, Linda
Simchon and Robert Shaman-
sky, Ron Mayer, Stan Cooper,
Taiwy Feerer, Harriet KeUen-
berg, Barbara Robins, Doug
Davis and Harold Zeidman.
Jeff Glassman, Willard Bornstein, Henry Saeman, Bob
Kellerman, Susan Schubert
and Bunny Cowall. Representing Sisterhood and Brotherhood were Jean Stone, Judy
Herman, Marti Delson, Bette
Jo Stempel, Clark Berman,
Michael Kravitz, and Howard
Gabe.
"Many more people than we
ever expected came up with
tears of pride in their eyes to
carry a Torah. So we happily
increased the number of processions from the six planned
in memory of the six million to
eight," the rabbi noted.
The Young Adults Congregation was represented by
Pam Hitchcock, Jay and
Cheryl Agranoff, Bonnie
Rubenstein, Tod Friedman
and Paul Greenland.
Barbara Seeder, Bonnie
Milenthal, Cherie Friedman
and Judy Oklander lighted the
Sabbath candles. Carrying the
Holocaust Scroll into the congregation under a Chuppah
held by Diane and Millar
Cummins and Sylvia and Lee
Dillon were Tussy and Neil
Shnider and Judy and Gary
Cooper.
Members of the Junior and
Senior Youth Groups who led
readings included Herschel
Bleefeld, Sherre Brandler,
Joshua Cohen, Julie Cooper,
Michelle Cooper, Rachel
Com, Colby Friedman, Alan
Galan, Shelby Goldman, Ron-
ni Hayon, Gayle Howard, Hil-
