Melanle Griffith (left) stars as NYPD Detective Emily Eden, whose routine assignment to investigate a missing person's report takes her undercover in the Hassldic community in "A Stranger Among Us." Enveloped by the centuries-old traditions of this Orthodox sect, Eden is aided by Mr. Klausman (David Bosenbaum, right). SNEAK PREVIEW JULY 14 *_4 Stranger Among Us* to open July 17 In Sidney Lumet's new thriller, A Stranger Among Us, a tough New York policewoman's undercover mission in a Hassidic community becomes a voyage of personal discovery. Detective Emily Eden, played by Melanie Griffith, is assigned to investigate the disappearance of Yaakov Klaus- man, a young Hassidic man, late one night in his office in New York's diamond district. There are no signs of a struggle or break-in, no fingerprints and three-quarters of a million dollars in gems is missing. When the evidence suggests to the street-hardened Eden' that it was an "inside job," she suggests to the Rebbe, played by Lee Richardson, that she go undercover to solve the crime. "Somebody who knows you; somebody you trust is the killer," she says. "And the only way 1 can catch him is by being as close to you as he is." As she enters the little- known society of the Hassi- dim, Eden feels as if she has been transported to a strange planet. She is put off by their beards, dark suits and hats, unfamiliar customs, rules and rituals. But as she comes to know their ways, she begins to see them in a new light. For the first time in her life, Eden finds herself in a warm, nurturing family environment. She is startled by how much she likes it. And the Rebbe's soft-spoken son, Ariel (trie jf_aij, is diilerent from any man she has met before. Susan Tarr and Avrech are co-producers. "I've always wanted to make a movie about the Has- sidim," says Rosenman, himself the great-grandson of Hassidic Jews. "It was an opportunity to show values that some people might consider old- fashioned — like the centrali- ty of the family — but are actually quite modern. And it speaks to a spirituality that a lot of people are looking for." The OJC and Block's Bagels are sponsoring a sneak preview of "A Stranger Among Us" on Tuesday, July 14, at AMC Eastland Centre 8 Cinema at 7:30 p.m. A limited number of free tickets is available with purchase at Block's Bagels, 3415 E. Broad St. and McNaughten Centre. Tickets are not available at the OJC or at the door. For details see page 7. The movie will open to the general public on Friday, July 17. It is rated PG 13.
