Foundation to honor Herb and Betty Schiff

By Ina Horwitz
Train up a child in the way
he should go.
And even when he is old,
He will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6
From the time they were
both young children, Betty
and Herbert H. Schiff were
taught the importance of embracing the needs of mankind.
Both came from homes where
philanthropy and humanitarian ideals were emphasized as
a way of life.
Throughout their lives, the
Schiffs have never stopped
giving of themselves. Whether
it has been to Orthodox, Conservative of Reform causes, to
Jewish or non-Jewish works,
they have dedicated themselves to reaching out on the
local, national and international levels.
"We don't know
how anyone can go
through life without
doing something for
someone. We have yet
to see a bad cause."
Betty Schiff
For their lifelong service toward improving conditions in
the community and in society-
at-large, the Schiffs will be the
special honorees at the Columbus Jewish Foundation's
12th Annual Meeting on Aug.
31 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Herb served as president of
the Foundation in 1962-64
and again in 1972-73, when it
was still "The Columbus Jewish Welfare Foundation." Later, in 1982-84, he was president of the current Foundations well as chairman of the
board from 1984-89
ways supporting one another," said Ben M. Mandelkorn,
Foundation executive director

Schiffs for 40 years.
"They are like two peas in a
pod," he continued. "Herb includes Betty in all his endeavors. He has a great deal of
admiration for her and she for
him. And Betty has taken on
communal responsibilities in

"Betty and Herb Schiff have
been a great pair together, al-
her own right. She always extends herself to get involved,
whatever the role.'
According to Mandelkorn,
Herb's participation in communal work, whether with a
campaign or program for the
Jewish Community Center,
Wexner Heritage Village, Unit-
ed Jewish Appeal or dozens of
"I pity people who
don't get involved.
When people say they
aren't interested in
charity, I ask them,
'What are you interested in?' You have to
be interested in making life better for mankind, not just for yourself."
Herb Schiff
other organizations, was a leg-
acy from his father, Robert.
"He tookthe mantle of leadership from his father very graciously and in a positive manner," said Mandelkorn.
Perhaps this is because the
Schiffs believe that life is not
complete unless you are involved. "And you can't just be
involved in one cause or one
series of causes," Herb said.
"You sh&uld be involved in
everything meaningful in life,
such as charities, organizations and businesses."
Noted Betty, "We don't
