'The Rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur Survival Kit9
Don't leave home without it
By Judith Franklin
The Rosh Hashanah Yom
Kippur Survival Kit (Leviathan Press, 1992) was something of a phenomenon even
before it reached the bookstore shelves. "Based on the
overwhelming response from
across the country lo prototype copies, I would say that
the book has really struck a
responsive chord in people,"
said Rabbi Shimon Apisdorf,
the book's author. "Look, it's
no secret that thousands of
synagogue seats which remain'
empty year round are suddenly filled for Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur. In some
places, it is literally standing-
room only.
"Another fact of which everyone is aware but few rarely
address is that most people
don't really relate to what's going on in the synagogue. Sure
there's a warm, comfortable
feeling that may come from
being together with your family and the Jewish community,
of Israel were the cornerstones
of his Jewish upbringing, he
remembers.
After completing his fresh-
'Apisdorf's style makes even the most
difficult themes comprehensible and user-
friendly. After reading what he has to say
about guilt, sin and reper^tance, one is left
with the impression that Apisdorf could
make even pouring concrete meaningful
and interesting.'r
but let's face it, after an hour
or so people begin to get fidgety."
Born in Cleveland, Rabbi
Apisdorf was raised in a relatively typical middle class suburban family. They belonged
to a Conservative synagogue
where he attended Hebrew
School until the age of 15.
Jewish holidays and-support
man year at the University of
Cincinnati, where he was a
sports writer for the college
newspaper, he decided to
spend a year in Israel. There
he made the decision to pursue a career in Jewish education. He studied at the Telshe
Yeshivah in Cleveland and at
the Aish HaTorah College of'
Jewish Studies in Jerusalem. -
from which he received his
rabbinic ordination in 1985.
The Torah Academy High
School Judaic studies teacher
came to Columbus in 1990
with Aish HaTorah. He thinks
it was his background lecturing, with Aish, which made
him realize the need for a book
such as the Survival KitBThe
Rosh Hashanah Yom Kippur
Survival Kit is the first in a
series of works which aim to
capture the vibnmcy and relevance of Jewish insight and
wisdom in a style and language that is meaningful and
accessible to the average con-;
temporary Jew with little or
no Jewish educational background," Rabbi Apisdorf explains.
The Survival Kit is a cross
between a book, a program
suphas you would receive at a
sportfflgevent or the theater.
