Rabbi Berman honored on 'Bar Mitzvah' year
By Dr. Earl Yaillen
The old Jewish saying,
"When you have two Jews,
you get three opinions," also
applies to how many Jewish
people define what they want
from their congregational rabbis. !
Members of Congregation
Tifereth Israel are no different. But this rabbi, Harold
Berman, seems to meet all
their expectations, as the Tifereth Israel Sisterhood prepares to salute him during his
thirteenth "Bar Mitzvah" year
with the congregation as part
of the 1992 Torah Fund Cam
paign.
Rabbi Berman and his family moved to Columbus in
1979 from Benton Harbor,
Mich. He remembers that he
set three goals when he became the congregation's spiritual head; :
• Determining what to do
with the building. There were
questions about whether it
should be enlarged and/or renovated or whether the congregation should move from its
downtown location. „
• Increasing and stabilizing
the professional staff. Rabbi
Berman felt that the program
development needed to pro
vide the congregation's children with a good Jewish education required a permanent
professional staff.
• Attracting new and young
members. Although the congregation had been in existence for a long time, the rabbi
knew that new and young
members were needed to assure the quality of its services
and programs in the future.
These three goals and numerous others have been met
in the 13 years since the rabbi
arrived. The board and membership made a commitment
to the neighborhood and the
synagogue was enlarged and
renovated at Us present site,
1354 E. Broad St. Congregation Tifereth Israel is now the
largest Jewish congregation in
the community and includes a
satisfying mix of members, including many young families.
The professional staff is highly
regarded, having received not
only local recognition, but national attention as well.
In addition to the internal
accomplishments of the congregation, Rabbi Berman is
proud of the synagogue's community involvement as well.
This includes the dialogue
which was opened with the Is-
