ISRAEL FEATURE
Military strength underlies hopes for peace
By Ina Horwitz
Whether it was the visit to
Latrun, an important site of
"Israel's Battle for Independence," or visiting the Tel Nof
Air Force Base or the military
cemetery at Mt. Herzl, members of the Columbus Jewish
Federation's Israel '92 "Experience the Miracle" mission
came away with a better understanding of Israel's military defenses and how important a role the military plays in
Israel's quest for peace.
The very first stop for participants after they deplaned
in Tel Aviv was at Latrun,
where they heard a. presentation by Brigadier General
(Dr.) Meir Pail. One of the
very last stops on the eight-day
trip was at Mt. Herzl. Beginning and ending the mission
with military. reminders did.
much to emphasize how the
Jews, the "people of the
book," survived throughout
the .ages: and the enormous
"cost" of establishing and securing the State of Israel.
During the Inquisition, the
Holocaust, the 1948 War, the
1967 War; the 1973 War and
conflicts up until the present
day — the Jewish people have
survived, and it could well be
called a miracle.
Pail spoke on what is now
the site of a military museum
and memorial. The bombed-
out buildings, covered with
bullet holes, were originally
built by the British as a police
station. Since the War for Independence, over 5,000 Israelis have been killed and their
names engraved on the walls
of the buildings. While Pail
-stressed the history, of Latrun,
-'Captured in the 1967 War, he
also stressed the fact that the
"Israeli army is the best yet."
He was just as firm in his deep
desire for peace.
Later in the mission, the visit to Tel Nof Air Force Base,
one of the best, if not the best,
operational bases in- Israel,
demonstrated to participants
the country's military strength.
Colonel Mark Levine of the
Israeli army spoke about the
strong link between the public
and the military — how it is
very much a part of everyday
life. With Israel having universal conscription, boys, at
age 18, serve three years and
girls serve two. The women's
corps plays an essential role in
helping to train the men, he
explained. Men serve in the
reserves until age 55, an Israeli

Levine noted the four main,
challenges facing the Israeli
military: (1) while the hopes
and prayers of Israelis are for
peace, the IDF must remain
strong, because there still exists- a serious military threat,
from such countries as Iraq,
Syria, Libya and Iran. (This
includes the threat of nuclear
development in the Middle
■ East); (2) areas of terrorism —
coming from the Lebanese
border and others international in scope; (3) civil unrest,
. and (4) training the new wave
of immigrants who will also be
conscripted into the IDF.
Deputy Commander of the
F-15 Squadron, Gideon Wise,
stated that when Israel was
Palestine, the British had a
