Gordon Zacks— A powerful activist
for Israel and world Jewry
■
By Ina Horwitz-WMtimore
He's called Gordy by his
friends. And Gordon Zacks
has many, among them such
powerful Washington figures
as John ICasich, Robert Dole,
Jack Kemp and former President George Bush.
Kemp calls Zacks an "institution in American politics";
close friend and former R.G.
Barry President Ed Stan says
Zacks* contribution to domestic and world Jewry is "legendary," and Columbus Jewish
Federation President Edwin
Ellman refers' to Zacks as "a
major power broker for the
Jewish people."
The list of those who sing
Zacks' praises goes on and on.
To honor him for his lifelong
commitment to Israel and the
Jewish people, the Columbus
Committee for AIPAC (The
- American Israel Public Affairs
Committee) has created the
Gordon B. Zacks Pro-Israel
Activist Award to be presented to Zacks on July 20.
* According to Mark Newman, former official in the
Reagan White House now a
consultant on international
trade issues, Zacks was involved in at least five historic
events in the past decade.
They were*. (1) the immigration of one-half million Jews
from the former Soviet Union
from 1988 to 1992; (2) the diplomatic recognition of Israel
by such countries as China
and India; (3) the destruction
of Israel's most immediate enemy, Saddam Hussein, and his
Saudi Arabia (Zacks has met
personally with many Arab
leaders, including numerous

Israel and its Arab neighbors,
including Syria, Jordan and
Palestinians, and (S) the personal intervention by President Bush in 1985 to bring 800
Jews out of Ethiopia and into
Israel in one night.
,v According to Newman, had
it not been for Zacks sensitizing Bush to the plight ofthe
Jewish people, and if Zacks
had not had the relationship
he did with the man who became president, it is very unlikely whether these outcomes
would have been the same.
He further noted, "It would
be tragic if anyone should
think that any of these occurrences happened by themselves."
Zacks has been extensively
and actively involved on the
local, national, international
and political levels. His numerous activities include serving as past chairman of United
Way of Franklin County, past
campaign Chairman ofthe Columbus Jewish Federation,
member ofthe advisory board
ofthe Center for Strategic and
International Studies, and co-
chairman ofthe Bush for President National Finance Committee in 1987/88 and the
Bush for President Middle
East National Advisory Committee in 1988.
He has traveled to over 70
countries and made over 45
trips to Israel and the Middle
East.
Zacks is listed in Who's
Who in America. He is married to Carol Sue, and they
have two daughters, Catherine
and Kimberly.
