The Democratic iPiibliciat
The forgotten man is Chnrles Miclicl- son. Michelson likes to be forgotten. He stays Ijehind the scenes' ami directs the act.
Michelson who formerly served as the chief correspondent in Washington of the New'York World has been the pub¬ licity strategist. behind this whole turn¬ over which resulted in the displacement of the Republican majority in Congress with Democrats.
And now in a little office at the Bilt¬ more, Michelson is trying to do the trick of supplanting the Republican President .with Roosevelt. There probably is no more competent man in the country for the job than Michelson. And if Roose¬ velt is elected President, there are those that say that President Roosevelt will have a Jewish private secretary, named Charles Michelson.
His brother, the late Albert Michelson, was the man who discovered how fast light- can travel.
If Charles can make Democratic light travel' as fast as the cosmic rays, he should be siire of the job.
The American Mind A young Jewish writer who likes to startle his readers, who in one of his books was an ardent Communist and now has evolved a new ism of his own Xo solve the economic ills of the world recently wrote a book trying to prove that the American mind and the Jewish mind are identical and both bad. Wc haven't read this latest effusion of this writer, but we did get a glimpse of an excerpt which was recently broadcast in the weekly Jewish press.
The Jew, the writer went on to say, has no spirituality. And he points to the Old Testament. At least, he says, you must admit the New Testament has spirituality. But if he .concedes that the New Testament has sporituality, then it New Testament has spirituality, then it ^eems to us that his whole thesis of Jew¬ ish want of spirituality is challenged, for of course the writers of the New Testa¬ ment were Jewish.
And pray, by what processes of rea¬ soning does, he arrive at the conclusion that the Old Testament has no spiritu¬ ality? ; Is there no spirituality in Job, in Isaiah; in an Amos?
Magistrate Goldstein Rules _ Magistrate Jonah J. Goldstein has pre¬ cipitated a controversy! which threatens to become world wide and rock the cosmos on which vve dwell. Judge Gold- ¦"Sfeih-eicbfierated'three "or four' young men, who were brought before him charged with having let down thp.shoul¬ der straps of their bathing suits.-
At the same time, another New York magistrate before'whom several other young people were arraigned on the same charge proved less lenient. He fined theni $25 each arid in the absence of money, they are now serving out the fine in jail. .
The controversy has now become sharp; In England, the question whether it is permissible to remove the shoulder straps has brought forth at • least one strong masculine.outburst for this fuller shoul¬ der strap freedom for men. And Rose Macaulay the woman, writer, says if men are to be permitted this privilege, women too must be accorded the right. A Hygenic Argument What may, if the winds blow favor¬ ably, be turned into a veritable social revolution is thus involved in the deci¬ sion.
The New York Times quotes one of the speakers before the recent Physical Therapists Convention to the effect, that while he has no particular theoretical sympathies with nudism, the fact remains that the skin is a breathing organism and needs air. '"
Which, we should say is score 1 for Magistrate Goldstein.
The Economic Argument .On the other hatid^ the argument is urged that if the shoulder straps are permitted to be removed, the next step, ¦ that of swimming in trunks alone is in¬ evitable. This will mean a further cut in the amount of wool used, and will only "intensify the economic distress of the sheep raising farmers of the middle west, who will be bound tb turn against Hoover, and maybe revive dangerous old Populism.
On the Other Hand But says the other side, that is only looking at the question from a one¬ sided point of view. If trunk swimming suits become the .vogue, the people will become healthier. As they grow healthier, their appetites will increase. and they will consume more of the corn and wheat produced by the farmers. Thus, .we may as a result, see a return to prosperity.
Jonnh and Hib Whale But the question has other angles, the moralists point out. We have exposed the, ankle, we have exposed the calves, ahd" now they would have us expose the chest. Are we all to be glorified like the Ziegfeld girls? It is immoral. ¦ It is indecent.
Strangely enough, their side is also taken by the burlesque producers and venders of erotica. If we permit the removal of the shoulder straps, you will kill our business, these gentry say. Peo¬ ple will get so callous to the anatomy, that they will have i|o i;uriosity to be capitalized. j
Vou can see for 'yourself, what a "whale" of a controversy Magistrate Jonah let loose. , |
A SuccesBful Failure They have just buried Henry Klein. He belongs to that group of really dis¬ tinguished who never, rtceive their proper credit from history. ' He was a true pioneer, an original thinker. If you (Continued on page 9)

Grodner To Sing At Ahavas Sholem Synagogue
Announcement is being made at this time by the officers of the Ahavas Sholem Congregation, that Cantor Solomon Grodner and his choir have been engaged to conduct the services for tbe high holi¬ days.
Rablii Isaac Wcrne, spiritual leader of the Congregation, will announce the sub¬ jects of his lectures for the holidays in the forthcoming' issue of the Cljrorilcle.
Two new rabbis have recently arrived here to assume the spiritual leadership of two prominent congregations.
Dr. Samuel M. Gup, of Providence. R. L, has entered upon his duties _ at Temple Israel in a spirit of consecration and is determined to inspire his members to a greater and more self-abnegating loyalty to the faith of Israel.
He wants to instill his people with a reverence for the sublime teacliings of Judaism as expounded by the immortal Dr, Isaac M. Wise and the never-to-be- forgotten Dr. Emil G. Hirsch. It is his fond hope to impress the members of the Bryden Road Temple with the strlk- . ing'fact that Judaism has a greater mes¬ sage for the children of Israel today than it has ever had and that its views of life possess a beauty, and a grandeur unsur- ; passed by those of any other faith or creed.
Likewise Rabbi Mordecai Hirsch¬ sprung, who haa a.<;5umed the spiritual leadership of the Agudath Achim Con¬ gregation, is intent upon arousing his . constituents to their duties and their re¬ sponsibilities as members of the House¬ hold of Israel. Rabbi Hirschsprung, who came here from Canton, stands for the principles of Orthodox Judaism as enunciated by such men as Dr. Samson Raphael Hirsch and Dr. Bernard Revel. It is his firm belief that the future of Judaism in this country belongs to the . Orthodox wing of Jewry, Towards this end he is bending every effort.to rally all traditionally minded Jews to his cause.
Whatever may be the personal views of individuals, there is no gainsaying the fact that both these newcomers to our community deserve our whole-hearted respect and co-operation. We must give theni a fair and square chance. Both these men are recognized by competent authorities as sincere leaders and schol¬ arly teachers, If we all work together to assist.them in their plans and proj¬ ects, they will succeed and thereby raise the standard of the einire: Jewish com¬ munity.
At any rate, the staff of the Ohio Jewish Chronicle takes this means of extending a welcoming hand to both ¦ Rabbis Giip and Hirschsprung. We shall do all within our pow-er to render their efforts more effective. ¦¦ *"..
I have heard with deep regret of the sudden death of Charles Gimbel of Phila¬ delphia, niember of the prominent Gimbel family; for, Mr, Gimbel was a splendid man as well as a brilliant exponent of a higher form of ethics in : tlie business world,
Mr. ¦ Gimbel was born in "Vincennes, Ind,. on Sept. 12th. 1861, and came to Philadelphia in the B0*s. His rise.in the business world was indeed rajjid. _ Along with his activities in mercantile lines, he also did his proper share of communal work. He donated liberally to all good causes regardless of race, color or creed. For many years he gave his.services to the Federation of Jewish Charities of. Philadelphia of whose Board he .was a distinguished member. He was also a director of the. Jewish Hospital and an executive of the United Campaign, Con¬ gregation Rodeph Sholom. of which Dr. Louis Wol?ey is the Rabbi, counted him among its mos^ loyal members. To- "rether with his brothers, Ellis A. and Daniel Gimbel, Charles Gimbel was among the largest contributors to charity in tbe Quaker city. In addition to his two brothers he is survived by a son, Adam L. Gimbel of New York City.
I believe that the multitude of people who benefited by this man's life and labors will never forget his memory. He has not only merited their good will and loyalty but also that of all American Jewry. „ ..

It is interesting to note that Ruth Gruber, a twenty-year-old Jewish girl oi Brooklyn, is the youngest girl to be awarded a doctorate at the University of Cologne. Germany. Miss Gruber won the Ph. D, degree in one year. She was sent to the Cologne institution as an ex- chanced student. There is no question but that a brilliant career awaits the young lady in some fipld of public serv¬ ice. I am looking forward to her prog¬ ress with keen anticipation.

Rabbi Mark is the man who first ol^cially introduced the teachings of the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati to the Jew¬ ish people of Australia. He has already organized two Reform Temples there, one in Melbourne and one in Sidney. Notwithstandin-j the fact that the btrict Orthodox Jews of the Antipodes have designated him as the "Goy Rabbi of Australia," Dr. Mark is prosecuting his labors with undiminished vigor, zeal and enthusiasm. Magistrate Goldstein Rules _ Magistrate Jonah J. Goldstein has pre¬ cipitated a controversy! which threatens to become world wide and rock the cosmos on which vve dwell. Judge Gold- ¦"Sfeih-eicbfierated'three "or four' young men, who were brought before him charged with having let down thp.shoul¬ der straps of their bathing suits.- At the same time, another New York magistrate before'whom several other young people were arraigned on the same charge proved less lenient. '" Which, we should say is score 1 for Magistrate Goldstein. Peo¬ ple will get so callous to the anatomy, that they will have i o i;uriosity to be capitalized. j Vou can see for 'yourself, what a "whale" of a controversy Magistrate Jonah let loose. , A SuccesBful Failure They have just buried Henry Klein. He belongs to that group of really dis¬ tinguished who never, rtceive their proper credit from history. ' He was a true pioneer, an original thinker.
