Local Zionists Sponsor Mass
Meeting, Sunday Evening,
December 18th
Is Thoro a Santa Clnus? Now that the season is approaching when you arc supposed to do that shop¬ ping early, that story of Rapaport's-;- of Jewish employment agency fame—is apropos.
.It seems according to this talc, that two youngsters were standing in Gimbel Brothers' department store, looking at the figure dressed as Santa Clau^.
The two youngsters were of differing ' faiths. One was Jewish and the othci non-Jewish.
The little Jewish boy began the con¬ versation with the statement: "Oh, Santa Claus is a fake. There is no Santa Claus."
Whereupon the non-Jewish boy grew irate and retorted: "Yes, there is a Santa Claus. He brought me a Jot of gifts last Christmas, and daddy says he . is going to bring me a lot ol presents ¦ this Christmas."
"Oh, there is no Santa Claus, returned the Jewish boy—I tell you there is- no Santa Claus—"
Whereupon Santa Claus himself leaned over and whi.spered to the Jewish lad; '"Was darfsdu ihm sagen." (Why do you have to tell him.)' ¦ He Knew
Rappaport, by the way, tells a quaint ¦.story about a Jewish customer at one of the art galleries.
This Jewish customer had waxed
prosp^erous in the great boom days and
.had in its aftermath developed the arty
complex. So he hied himself to an art
gallery to look at some pictures.
Strangely enough, the first picture that he looked at pleased his eye. What the picture was is clear by its title—^The Crucifixion.
"I want that picture," said the Jewish cloak and suit dealer. The dealer bit his lips. "Don't you think you had bet¬ ter look at some of the others before inaking Up your mind?"
"No, no," continued the cloak manu¬ facturer. 'T want what I want. I want that picture." '. "That's okay," retorted the dealer, ' "We'll be glad ot sell it to you, but you must know that it is a rule of thest galleries, that once a picture is pur¬ chased it cannot be returned. Do you know what that picture—The Crucifixion —^portrays?"
"Sure," returned the Jewish manufae-, turer. "That's Hondini. He'll get out
-t.,/li;.»t."_^ _.„«,-^.„--:,.v.,l^-..^--^^-.;i„,,.,;,
A Prclty-Goya And speaking of Art gallery stories .there is the one of Dr. J. Max,Weiss. This also concerns a cloak and suit manufacturer who decided to embellish his pai'lors with a great painting. • So he too, hied himself to the art galleries on Fifth Avenue and prome- luidcd from one to another picture.
Finally, he came upon the picture of a young woman—with the inscription underneath of the painter—Goya. "I'll take that," he told the dealer. ¦ The dealer wa!s somewhat taken back; The pictures by ¦ the more commonly known artists,' he had thought, would appeal,to the nmnufacturer. Why had he selected this picture by Goya.
He did not want to ask, but finallj the manufacturer as he wps leaving, - bedming with satisfaction over his pur¬ chase, let the secret out himself when he remarked.
"That's just the picture I want. Yes. I always wanted a pretty Goya ui my home," ,
A Joumaliatjc Genius We are always being treated with the achievements flf a Pulitzer, a Hearst or a Scripps in building up some great newspaper. Yet -how few have ever heard of Louis Weinberg, notwith¬ standing the fact that in his way, this young Jewish newspaperman has achievcd.grcatcr than any of these pillars of the Fourth Estate. Weinberg is the editor of the Warm Springs, Georgia, Mirror.
You have of course heard of Warm Springs lately. It is that little resort which President-Elcct Roosevelt favors with his visits.
Warm Springs is a town ol about five hundred population, yet the Mirror, which Weinberg publishes has a circula¬ tion of-over a thousand. Besides all the residents of the town, the subscription lists include subscribers in thirty states, ¦ who at one time or another, have, come to Warm Springs for infantile paralysis treatment.
Seven years ago, Weinberg, a cub re¬ porter on the Brooklyn Eagle, was stricken with infantile paralysis. Like Roosevelt, he journeyed to Warm Springs for treatment and tliere launched ¦ the Mirror.
A Trefa Story Speaking of stories, as we were a few paragraphs back, there is a good one we take pleasure in" plagiarizing from F. P. A.'s column.
It was on a Yoni Kippur's day. Said one, faster to another: "1 think I'll go out and have some oysters,"
"What I" said the other faster— "You're going to ate oysters on Yom Kippur?"

The Womens' Pioneer Organization of Columbus, of which Mrs. Harry Fried¬ land is president, and which is a prom-- isiiig organization, is happy to announce that they have made arrangements with the national organization in New york to have as tlieir^ guest speaker Goldie Meyerson. for Friday evening, December nOth, 8 p. m., at the East Broad Street teinple. Rabbi Nathan Zelizer will be chairman of that affair.
Mrs. Meyerson has gained an enviable reputation as a speaker on matters per- taming to the work in Palestine, where, her family, is now and where she has been active personally among the Chalut- sim, This meeting is sponsored by the Pioneer Organization of Columbus, and a very successful and educational lecture is expected. For more detailed informa¬ tion regarding this meeting, watch the future editions of the Chronicle.
In a recent address Rabbi Bernard Drachman of New York City scored Jewish organizations which are celebrat¬ ing the Spinoza Tercentenary, Dr.: Drachman holds that Spinoza was a Jew neither in the religious or national aspect and that he was out of sympathy with the Jews as a people. Therefore, it.is lacking in self-respect to arrange celebrations "in honor of one utterly de¬ void of sympatliy with.his ancestral faith and, people and whom his brethren felt compelled to disavow and thrust from their midst." ,
Continuing Dr. Drachman declared: "It is time that Jews have sufficient pride not to claim as their own those. connected with them only by the acci¬ dent of birth, but who stand outside ^He " camp of Israel and in whose hearts there is nothing of the faith and love and loyaltv which are the only true basis of Jewish brotherhood."
I do not agree with the learned rabbi. I think that his attitude is exceedingly narrow and colored by preiudice. Re¬ gardless of the type of thinking in, which" Spinoza indulged and the conclusions at which he arrived, the Iqise grinder of , Amsterdam was one of the four or five greatest Jews of all times. He was a doughty champion of religious liberty and proved himself on numerous occa- sitons to be a friend of all mankind. He lived the life of a saint and became the inspiration for some of 'the greatest thinkers of modern times. Albert Ein¬ stein today calls Spinoza his master, and accepts Spinoza's God as his own. Ein¬ stein calls the worship of this God a cosmic religion in which mind and soul meet in the union of all truth. As Dr. John Haynes Holmes of the Cbmmunity Church, New York City, declared last week, the only true religious men are philosophers, scientists and saints.

"I'll take that" he told the dealer. Yes. I always wanted a pretty Goya ui my home" , A Joumaliatjc Genius We are always being treated with the achievements flf a Pulitzer, a Hearst or a Scripps in building up some great newspaper. Said one, faster to another: "1 think I'll go out and have some oysters" "What I" said the other faster— "You're going to ate oysters on Yom Kippur?" (Continued on page 2) Kabbi James G.
