By the Way
By David Schwartz
Speaking of good, advice, lierc is some for all those liuUding lawyers ami even those beyond the budding stage from 110 less a person thait Max Stcucr.... Never come to court with an air of importance .....Never use big words in your trials. ....Never take nates....use your mem¬ ory instead. Coming from a lawyer who is said to make a million annually, it ought to he -worth listening to Per¬ haps the brilliant Max should also say something about knowing how to charge for he certainly can do that. *... .and what is m6>e, they seem glad to pay.... Stencr, it ia said, gets tens of thousands of dollars annually from lawyers who come to ask him .what's -wrong with .their handling of a case... iBy the way, they tell a story of ascertain man that came,to consult Steuer....! never give
advice .until I atn paid, said Steuer
But first, I just wanted to ask you to think over this aspect of the case..... I ¦can't think without money, replied Stciier ....and to start the cerebral processes of the brilliant Steuer it was necessary to give him a check in four figures.
By^thc way, did you know that Rabbi Mjlton Ellis, formerly of some North Carolina pulpU, is now in a managerial capacity at Altman'a... .This makes the (., second, so far as I fcnow, graduate of Hebrew Union College to be employcdin a department store. First was Kabbi Voorsanger, former World War chap¬ lain....Very sorry about that report of the serious illness of Rabbi Krass of
Temple Emanu El Talking about
news that is not depressive, consider this, Lewis Brown's "This Believing World" sold lots and lots at the standard price. .^.Then tlicy got ¦out 50,000 copies in that one dollar edition and now that's
all sold out So now they are getting
out a new edition at the old standard price.
Best buyers of H-ebraica books besides
Jews ^rc who? Yes, the Catholic
priests...... Jewish book publishers all
over the world are slumping but there is compensation in the fact that many of the non-Jewish i>ublishers are taking up Jewish books....By the way, there re¬ cently appeared an interesting book on . Jews published in France titled "Damn the Jews'*... .Contrary to its title, how¬ ever, the book speaks very -favorably of the Jews....it is dedicated in satire to
fhe Ku KIux Klan.
Talking about Jewish glory, is there anything to excel the fact that Paul Huymans of Belgium is the present pre¬ siding officer of the League of Nations? ....One of Huymans' parents, I.under¬ stand, was not a Jew and Huymans him¬ self is very Httle interested in things Jewish;... .Still his father was Jewish and his grandfather, Solomon, was one of the most scholarly figures in the Jewish world of Holland and Huymans himself, chief of the League of Nations, is mar¬ ried to a Jewess. So ptit another feather in your cap and expand, huh?
Don't be so down in mouth about de¬ pressions, says Peter Wiernik, veteran , editor of the Jewish Morning Journal.
... .Wiernik recalls the panic of 1894
. People said then that 1873 was worse
and yet tlie country got better
Wiernik says all prophecies must be taken -with three or four grains of salt. ....Before the Spanish-American War, he recalls,! he wrote an article that the Jeivish press would not live very long. "See how wrong I -was- That taught me hot to make prophecies".. ..Talking of the good old timps, Wiernik recalls the time when he could go from New York to Chicago % railroad for $5.00... Because low? rate was competition be¬ tween the railroads,....Did you know that Buddy King, radio entertainer, is a relative of. Sam Koenig, Republican boss of New York....That Samuel Shipman, playwright, has ambitions for the con¬ cert stage and is taking lessons to that end... I Yes, there was a little friction caused the other night at the opening of the American Palestine Campaign when Nathan Straus, Jr., chairman, twice called time on Rabbi Schulman for go¬ ing "beyond the time limit,,..And the comic Irving Caesar, who in times past was wont to indulge in much criticism of the producers, has been very reticent of late, explaining it thusly:. I w.ould rather be wrong thaiv not work
While figures mathematical may be able to help you tell, and while the fe¬ male figure may be taken as one of the indices cf pulchritude, when it comes to male figures, it is hard to say what they mean. Take Irving Berliii, George Gershwin—well, they are lean in figure, ¦but on the other hand, such composers as Lew Brown, de; Sylva, etc,, are stocky. Also among th^ stocky are the Schuberls, Toxy, Max Gordon, and Sam Harris, So you can't lean so much on
¦figures, as it were Someone was
showing Lincoln Steffen's work—I mean his autobiography, the other day to Dr. Joshua Bloch. There is the story there that Joseph FeU, of Fels-Naptha fame, once said to a distinguished dristian that the Jews would never cease to exist un¬ til they had fulfilled their mission
And the distinguished 'Christian thereupon queried: "What is their mission?" And Fels did reply: To teach the Christians Christianity... .Whereupon Dr. Bloch with a Muradish look replied that Mai'
monides had said the same thing
And by the way, did you know that the ancient Jewish philosopher-phyaician» Avicenna, was a great exponent of sun therapy?....And if that doesn't interest yon, maybe you wilt be interested in the fact just discovered by this columnist that Meyer Guggenheim, the founder of the great Guggenheim-Anaconda for¬ tune, before he went out west looking for mineral wealth was a merchant in Phila¬ delphia and ari unsuccessful merchant at that..,.Somebody ought to write a life
story of the old Guggenheim Pretty
nearly everyone of those old pioneers has (Continued on page 4)

New York Academy of
Medicine Refuses $200,000
Because of Discrimination
NEW YORK—In .refusing a bequest amounting to $200)000 or more, because it contains a Jevvish exclusion clause, the trustees of the New York Academy of Medicine have not disclosed the identity of the donor. The only comment made by Linsly R. Williams, director, states:
"A wealthy citizen proposed to leave to the acadeiny $200,000 or more, the in¬ come of which was to be used by the making of grants to individuals engaged^ in research in medicine. It was to be stipulated, however, in the will that no^ grants should be made to Jews.or any other individual working in an institution which had a Jew as a member of its board. This proposal was unanimously turned down by the tri(stees."
Bequest Indicates Bigotry
Following closely the aimouncemeiit of the manifestation of broadmindedness on the part of the trustees of the New York Academy of Medicine who declined an antirSemitic bequest, is the news of a display of bigotry in a bequest estimated between $25,000 and $30,000, to Cornell University, providing that no one oi J^vi^. ish, German or Italian descent ia to bene¬ fit by it. The fellowship was established in the will of Mrs. Ada- P. Tompkins of Brooklyn, N. Y, It is hoped that CorneH will follow the splendid example set bj the New York Academy of Medicine.

United Synagogue of Ajmerica
Endorses Tifereth Israel
Membership Drive
During the past two months two well organized groups in the East Broad St/ Temple have been conducting a member¬ ship campaign with unusual success. This effort will wind up on May Tth and will he followed with an elaborate affair at which time the class of new members will be officially preseiited to Rabbi Na¬ than Zelizer,'new spiritual leader of the Temple. A very.fine program is being planned for this occasion to which the, membership and friends of the congre¬ gation will be invited.
The following letter was recently re¬ ceived by Frank Bayer, chairman of the membership campaign:
Mr. Frank Bayer, Oairman, Membership Drive of Tifereth, Israel.
Congregation, 1220,E. Livingston Ave.,
Columbus, Ohio. Dear Mr, Bayer:
I understand that your congregation is now engaged in an effort to increase your membership. Permit me to con¬ gratulate you and the congregation upon your appointment to the Chairmanship of the committee in charge of this work. I express to you the sincerest wishes of myself as well as those of the ynited Synagogue -of America for your success.
Affiliating with a congregation like Tifereth Israel means gaining worth¬ while friends for oneself, providing op¬ portunities for one's^ children, to engage in worth-while activities that will retain their loyalty to Judaism and make for a better understanding of their own par¬ ents. The noblest and the highest form of affiliation for the Jewish people is through the synagogue. Now that Ti¬ fereth Israel has as its leader so brilliant and able a man as Rabbi Nathan Zelizer, all Jews in Columbus, Ohio, who are forward-looking and at the same time loyal to traditional Judaism should rally about Tifereth Israel and make of it a pillar of strength for Jewish life, and a source of honor to the community.
' I am,
Sincerely yours,
Samuel M. Cohen, Executive Director.

New York Academy of Medicine Refuses $200,000 Because of Discrimination NEW YORK—In .refusing a bequest amounting to $200)000 or more, because it contains a Jevvish exclusion clause, the trustees of the New York Academy of Medicine have not disclosed the identity of the donor. The only comment made by Linsly R. Williams, director, states: "A wealthy citizen proposed to leave to the acadeiny $200,000 or more, the in¬ come of which was to be used by the making of grants to individuals engaged^ in research in medicine.
