The ihciuglit continually recurs to me that iicrlinps the New Deal .should senul some investigators to Palesthic. There, obviously an amaziji[| thing is happening. There 15 pro.^ipcrity at a time when the world is in bed with the (Icprcssioii. Not l>rosperity of the best Occidental type, liul still  satisfying  prosperity.
Now in ancient days, we might have said that .someone or other raised his liandi lifted his eyes to the sUie.s aiid Iirodticed this miracle.    .
But- nowadays, wc don't have miracles. So   the    prosperity   that   Pale.stine   h having must be, of a natural sort.   Now what is the cause of it.
Immigration  and   Prosperity . The  only  thing   of   an  economic  sort that  I  can sec happening in  Palcslihe is that there i.s iminigration there.
Can it he that this thing we have been taught to dread — immigration — causes prosperity?
It a^ipears that it docs. Cniisider what made the greater pros¬ perity of the north as compared with the south of our own country.
It. was obviously the great influx of immigrants in the north. It couldn't have been" anything else. The land of t!ic south is as fertile—its climate more pleasant.
Past Depressions 1 liave an idea that what made the de¬ pressions of previous decades less sinister than the present one is the.fact that the docirs of our country were wide,o]jen^ to

I have been told by people who re¬ nieniber the- depression of -1S!)3 that it was much milder than the present de¬ pression. Certainly, there is no record of any such numbers of banks or liusi- ncsscs generally "going bust" in that slump. ¦
During all that depression, and during the depression of 1873,' the doors of! the country remained fully opened to immi¬ grants.
Perhaps the fact that these immigrants had to he fetl, clothed and housed short¬ ened and softened these previous de¬ pressions. , Ultimate Effects It may be that while the immediate effect of immigration, is to' bring'pros perity, ultimately the increase of popu¬ lation is harmful.
I am not going to challenge that here, except to say that I personally do not believe that in a rightfully organized economic system that is so and by right¬ ful 'system I do not necessarily mean socialistic system. For it stands to rea son that tbe more people protliicing, the I more production and hence . the more wealtli. But this jioint I know will be challenged by niany.
Hut what I believe will not he so chal¬ lenged is that as long as the immigration is. taking place, there will he prosperity, \ for the needs of these immigrants must ."j he   supplied   in   some  "fashion   and   that .i ineans business.
Open the Doors to Prosperity And so it is with the purcset instincts of patriotisni—in tlie name of prosperity —that I call upon the administrators of the New Deal to consider this angle, that of breaking down the locks wliich now close the doors of this country. In fact, shatter the very doors, and make stepping stones or stepping lioards out of them.
And let America stretch out her arms in the good old American tradition, that was. interruptetl only after'the war-- strctch ont her arms and welcome all those who would come in.

A startling number of anonymous mimeographed chain letters have been found tliroughout ibe MetroiioHtan area (one on a Newark subway, another in a Sunny Side, L. 1., liu.s, yet another in a I3oro Park surface car, many in New York public libraries and on park benches'). The cuntcnts of the chain let- ter.addrcssed to "American Gentiles," are vile, revolting to any thinking person for tbe wording is hopelessly puerile.
"Do you rcali/c wc are iiatbing but Jewish slaves?" tlie letter asks. Accusa¬ tions are wild and tbe phraseology i.s very evidently of German construction, which would indicate that tills propaganda lias its origin in Berlin. "Gangsternin" is used to describe tlie jews, and "boycott" is  spelled  with a  "k"—ibnykott.

BERLIN, (J. T. A.)~Strccts of this city are once again littered with poison¬ ous anti-Jewish pogrom- propaganda. A contagion of anti-Semitic leaflets and pamphlets openly calling for massacresof Jews is sweeping.the capital, tlie liter.v turc being distributed on almost every stre,et corner, and especially on the Pots- damerplatz in the center of the city.
Foreign observers here arc especially interested in the pogrom literature, for most of the pamphlets carry the "Makcii- kreiiz,"'" which has now become the of¬ ficial'government emblem. Each foreign observer asks himself this (piestion; 'Would my government .permit pogrom literature to tie distributed in the streets of New York, London, Paris, Moscow, Rome or Copenhagen with my govern¬ ment's emblem printed conspicuoiisly on it?"
Special attention has been attracted by
.booklet entitled: "The Jew, Interna¬ tional Pest." The hook demands; "Get' rid of Jews once and for all. The League of Nations is a product of Jewish ma¬ chinations. Jews are not human beings, but scorpions dangerous- to humanity. They are seeking to conquer the world and . especially to destroy Germany as tbcy destroyed Russia.
"There are two kinds of anti-Semitism, one, the. higher kind, which is effected by limiting Jewish power by passing re-^ strictive laws, The other kind, tbe lower kind, is by kilhng Jews. The latter is l>erhaps terrible but the results arc bet¬ ter. The way definitely to oiid the Jew¬ ish question is to annihilate the Jews. LON.D0N-{J. T. A.)—Lord Rother¬ mere, newspaper magnate and owner of the Daily Mail, which has the largest cir¬ culation iu England, wrote an article in his paper today on Germany, glorifying tbe Nazis and completely justifying Hit¬ ler's anti-Semitic policy.
"The Israelites, with their interna¬ tional attachments, insinuated themselves into the German administration," I^ord Rothermere wrote. He claimed that Hitler has freed Germany of such abuses.

VIENiNA, (J.T.A.)-^Bloody maltreat¬ ment of Jews in German concentration camps was confirmed today in an affi¬ davit submitted to the Catholic Press Association here by a non-Jew nameii Dcsider Rakacs, formerly a member of the newspaper Zentrumablatt in Dues- sclddorf." Rakacs has just arrived in Vi¬ enna after three months' imprisonment in Derndorf Prison at the Sicghurg con¬ centration camp in Prussia near the Rhine River.
Jews confined in the camps, Rakacs. declared in his affidavit, were forced to cleaii the lavatories, to wipe the Nazi storm troopers' hoots and actually to kiss the feet of the Nazis—otherwise they were inhumanly beaten.
"I have seen how the hair of Jews was torn out of their flesh, how Jews were compelled to beat their faces with their own fists as well as each other's faces, until the blood spurted," he stated. "There are many ghastly suicides in these prisons," Rakaca concluded.

A.) r^rProfessor Albert Einstein recently de¬ clared in connection with the reports which represent him as' accepting chairs at numerous universities that he woidd in the future spend half of every" year, tbe winter season; at the Institute for Ad¬ vanced Study, of which Dr. Abraham Flexncr is the. head, at Princeton, N. J.
"To announcements that Professor Einstein has accepted chairs at Madrid University and the College de France, it is necessary to add that Professor Ein¬ stein, a year ago, obligated himself per- niitnently in the future to spend the win¬ ter half of the year at Princeton," a statement issued in the scientist's behalf declared. "Professor Einstein will con¬ tinue there his scientilic activity in the Institute for -Vlvanced Study ncwly- estatilished by Dr. Abraham Flexncr.

¦ Professor Einstein's visit to England, which he has just conclnde<l, did not briiig 'any further developments in con¬ nection with his acceptance of a chair at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, it is learned. It had been believed that filial arangements would have been made on tbe visit as a result of which Dr. Einstein would have fmally accepted the invitation.
Nazis   Cheerfully   Distribute Mosse Advertising Accounts
LONDON, (J. T. A.)—The Rudolf Mosse Advertising Company, with branches throughout Germany, has been shut down, it was disclosed here today, The advertising for the Mosse press has heen transferred to other firms or to concerns newly established for the pur¬ pose. Several Jewish employees dis¬ missed when the Mosse firm* was closed have taken part in the formation of new companies in the hope that they will be able to eke out a living this way.

Actually the strangest situation exi.sts in Germany now, tbe Polish and Lithuanian Jews, whose Governments do not allow them to be molesti^d, being privileged in comparison with the German jews whose welfare is a matter in which foreign governments and—I hope for the lircsent—the League of Nations are not concerned to intervene.
Against these German Jews cynical, ¦ cold-blooded and cruel persecutions pro¬ ceed. From press reports we see that (i,(Kl() Jewish doctors in Germany are" brcadlcss and deprived of every oppor¬ tunity to qarn a living. The way in which the undiminished and continuing boycott of 'Jewish business is working is demon¬ strated by the typical fate of the Her¬ mann Tietz stores.
This enterprise, founded by Oscar Tietz, famed over Germany as a philan¬ thropist,, employing 12,OU0 people in Ber¬ lin and tbe provinces, is not a public company but .was carried on by niembers of the Tietz fainily as a private under- takiiTg. The banks owned by/the state refused to extend any credit ahd it could not" pay its way. The Tietz iom. and the son-in-law, Herr Zwillenberg, were; cleared out and now the firin continues as an Aryanizcd enterprise with the aid of state credits. /
The Leonard Tietz Company in Co¬ logne was dealt with in a similar way. These- arc not isolated instances; the same thing has happened to Jevvish enter¬ prises throughout Germany.
Worse still is the fate of thousands of Jewish employees in Germany. Where they are not already dismissed, the Nazi cells are demanding their dismissal under threat of a strike. They get no protec¬ tion whatsoever from the trades unions which must not 'enroll Jewish menibers and large numbers of Jews, who were members of the trades unions before the Nazi regime have all been expelled.
A great many of these iioor people hrive no choice, but to fall burden on public charity but the state does not give assistance .to Jews and  Marxists.    The
amc state appears to consider the attempt of Jewish workers to go abroad as eco¬ nomic treason. So we must at any rate conclude from the imprisonment of forty Je.wish doctors who did nothing more than organize themselves into an aid bureau to help their collegnes, whose bread was taken away, to emigrate to other coun¬ tries.
INFANTS HOME OF OHIO
In memory of Mr. Joseph' Schonthal's 8(lth birthday anniversary, the Memorial Fund of which Mrs. Leo Schramm.of Dayton, Ohio, is State Chairman, donated the funds to purchase playground equip¬ ment, summer treats and various elec¬ trical equipment for the Home.
Mrs. Myer Levinson donated a sand box and toys and infants clothing. Little Alan Isaac Wolf entertained all the kiddies with a ixirty in his grandmother's garden in celebration of his third birth¬ day.
