Hindenburg^s Death Gives
Hitler Absolute Ruler
of Germany
Nazi Sport
Those who liavc fallen for the Nazi line that Jews are being given every op¬ portunity to compete for the German Olympic team for 1030 are invited to read what a German Jewish athlete, now in tliis country, lias to report.. .The track ant! fiehl men of the Jewish athletic clubs have only a tiny field, which is in bad conilition, for their training, and arc al¬ lowed to train there only twice a week for two hours in the early evening.,. And the Nazi commissioners in charge of the Olympic try-outs chose the Jewish candidates for track and field at random ...This because Jews are often very good in track and field events, so that if the boys had been chosen on their merits some Jewish youth niight have a chance of making the German Olympic team... And a Berlin Jewish rowing crew, which has not yet been beaten by any Aryan competitors, haii been barred altogether from competing in regattas.. .That is the Nazi idea of sportsmanship...
About-People
We understand that it is on the advice of Bernard M.' Baruch that General Hugh Johnson is considering retiring from the NRA...Which reminds us that in his work on public baths and swim¬ ming pools in New York Mr. Baruch xeceives .tlic. .full cooperation of his brother, Herman B, Baruch, of whom you may not have heard, but who is not only active in financial circles but a con¬ tributor to medical journals also, having an M. D., and the dignified Van Dyke that goes with that degreb...Mordecai Ezekiel, economic adviser to the depart¬ ment of Agriculture, is having his trou¬ bles these days with advocates of a new infant industry—the as yet unborn paper pulp industry of the South.. .Dr. Ezekiel is counseling the practice of birth control in American industry.. .And did you know that Robert Straus, son of Am¬ bassador Jesse, is a colleague of ¦ Kil- bourne Johnson, son of General Hugh, in the NRA?...
To Be Remembered
Nominated for the Forget-Me-Not club: V'&'Iantei of'the American. He¬ brew, for his exposure of Colonel E. N. Sanctuary's efforts to spread anti-Semitic propaganda in the guise of lectures given at the Broadway Presbyterian Church of New York.. .The Colonel, as you may not know, is the head of the "World Alliance against Jewish Aggressiveness"
Funny Story
The occasion was a dinner given by the Institute of Politics at ^illiamstown, Mass., and one of the guests of honor was Rabbi. Leon Hurwitz of Brooklyn ... The entree came on, .and lo, it was ham and eggs... Great consternation bn the part of the toastmaster, who called over a waiter and asked him to remove the rabbi's ham-and as quickly as pos¬ sible, lest the rabbinical feelings be hurt ...The waiter dashed over to a. bearded gentleman who, however, gave up the dish only after a struggle.. .Some time later it developed, that the bearded gen¬ tleman was not Rabbi Hurwitz, who is cleanshaven, but Admiral Huffey of the U. S. Navy.. .And now the Admiral is wondering whether to shave or to apply for a Jewish pulpit...
Another One
, To a lady who asked him his age the other day Walter Wincheli coyly said: "Guess!"...She did, and her guess was 52., .W. W,, shocked, took a deep breath and told her: 'Lady,' you're wrong by fifteen years".. .Cried the lady; "What! You mean you're 07 years old?",.. Political Notes We see that" Congressman Dickstein is taking to heart some criticism that has been leveled at him for getting too much space in the public prints in connection with the congressional Nazi investiga¬ tion, which Is to fae continued after the hot weather is over...He shouldn't... Even his critics all agree he has done an excellent job of the investigation, and is needed to keep up the good work... Congressman Emanuel Celler of New! York, by the way, is hoping that the manufacturers of soap bearing a legend 1 urging his re-election will desist from] distributing it...He feels, and quite' rightly, that this is hardly a dignified mode of campaigning, and wants it! clearly understood that he neither origi-i nated nor approved the idea...Did your buy the August American Mercury in the hope of seeing the Chase and Leavitt article on Governor Lehman, which we had announced, and then call us a liar? ...Well, it has been postponed for the September issue of the Mercury, and anyway, the money you paid for the mag was well spent...

BERLIN (WNS)—Not more than a fortnight ago it looked as if the star of Hitler was definitely setting. The blood purge of the Storm Troops on June 30, Hindcnburg's determined support of Von Papen, the fiasco of the Austrian Nazi putsch, with its subsequent change in the Italian attitude towards Germany—all these events pointed to a definite decline of Hitler's prestige and power in his own country and Europe.
The death of President von Hindcn¬ burg has changed this situation over night. The fact that Hitler ,has assumed the double ofiice of president and chan¬ cellor is of minor importance in com¬ parison with the undoubted loyalty which the Reichswchr has apparently pledged to the Nazi dictator. It is generally felt that any government having the sup¬ port of the crack troops of the Reichs¬ wchr is as solidly intrenched as ihe most stable dictatorship anywhere today. It can he destroyed, or disturbed only by outside forces.
Your correspondent is firmly convinced that following the inevitable "endorse¬ ment" by the German people on August IJ) of Hitler's coup in taking over the presidency, Hitler wiU inaugurate a series of new policies designed to con¬ vince the world that the Nazi movement intends to rally all Germans opposed to Communism. In other words, the Nazi policy will veer definitely to the right, and another purge of all radical Nazi elements may be expected. . While the blood purge of June 30 was intended to clear the military atmosphere and to satisfy the Reichswehr leaders that their army and no other unit was the backbone of the government, the new purge which is coming will deal with the economic situation, Hitler has al¬ ready called to the cabinet Dr. Hjalmar Schadit, president of the Reichsbank, shrewd financier and tricky manipulator, as minister of economics in place of Dr. Kurt Sclimitt, strawman of Fritz Thys- sen, financial angel of the Nazi move-- mcnt. This does not imply that Hitler is freeing himself. from,..the: all-powerful .and dominating influence of Thyssen, but It indicates that Hitler wants to counter¬ act the increasingly known fact that Thyssen is t!ie; real ruler of Germany.
It is most probable that Reichsfuehrer Hitler, as hcnow calls himself, ¦will at¬ tempt some empty and meaningless ges¬ ture in the direction of improving the Jewisii status in Naziland. Now that Hitler is not as dependent on the storm troopers as he was he will be in a posi¬ tion to issue decrees which might give the impression that he is stretching out a conciliatory hand toward Jewish public opinion. It is an open secret that Hjal¬ mar Schacht considers the breaking of the anti-Nazi boycott as the first step in the economic rehabilitation of Ger¬ many. He will go to aiiy lengths to persuade Hitler to adopt measures con¬ sidered likely to lead to an easing of out¬ side economic pressure on Germany.
Meanwhile, Hitler's voice is the only one authorized to speak for Germany, whether the German pfeople will it or not. All kinds of rumors and interpre¬ tations are current here to the effect that the Reichswehr leaders are actually in control of the situation and that Hitler will have to do their bidding. The fact remains, however, that the far-flung Thyssen interests are, as before, pulling the political wires in Germany. One of the primary aims of the Thyssen group is to eliminate completely Jewish influ¬ ence in industrial and business life in Hitlerland. If Hitler should really try to run counter to this objective he would soon find out that he is the "absolute" ruler of Germany only as long as Fritz Thyssen wills it

WASHINGTON, D. C—That anti- Semitisni and anti-CathoHcism will be used as issues in the November con¬ gressional election hy those opposed to President's Roosevelt's New Deal is in¬ dicated by tlie "Fellowship Forum," notorious anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish monthly, which in its Atigust issue warns the country that the government at Wasliington is literally swamped with political Roman Catholics and Commu¬ nistic Jews who are in league with the Roosevelt administration to destroy the govenimciit. "I'ellowship Forum," which has been violently attacking the Roose¬ velt administration, declares that the New Deal "Is made up of alien-minded radicals. Its spirit Is that of Hitler and Mussolini and Dollfuss and Stalin. It is not drawn from the yeomanry of the country. Jews and radicals from New York and other great cities overwhelm¬ ingly preponderate in Its membership.
"It is composed of Bernard M. Baruch and the Vienna-born Professor Felix M. Frankfurter, both of New York City, and the radical satellites who revolve about them. They have the ear of-^he President. Their destructive philosophy is the basis of his policies. It is they who have hurled him in the swift stream of revolution. He is a willing instrument of their purposes. He is ready to go all the way with them. They are returning us tp the absolutism of the Middle Ages.
"In that purpose the Vatican fully con¬ curs. Ever ready to foment and use
dangerous radicalism to wreck demo¬ cratic government, it is unqualifiedly with the New Dealers. Its hundred thrones, ils 8,000,000 votes and its 20,000,000 sub¬ jects iu this country arc solidly back of the New Deal. + * The outcome rests with the voters. * * * In spite of their solid block of Roman Catholics and radi¬ cal votes, which number many millions, in spite of millions more being fed from the public revenues, the enemy forces must be overwhelmed in the November election,"
Among those listed as forming' the "Jewish-Radical Roosevelt Personal Gov¬ ernment" are: Bernard M. Baruch, "un¬ official president"; Supreme Court Jus¬ tices Brandeis and Cardozo; Professor Felix Frankfurter, "chief legal adviser"; Samuel Untermycr, Jesse I. Straus, Gen¬ eral Hugh Johnson, Donald Richberg, Alcxaiidcr Sachs, Prof. Albert E. Taus¬ sig,, E. A. Goldenweisser, Benjamin Cohen, Professor R. G. Tugwell, Secre¬ tary of the Treasury Morgenthau> Rose Schneidcrman, Prof, Leo Wolman, Sid¬ ney Hillman, Charles W. Taussig, Gerard Swope, Governor Lehman, Prof. A. A. Berle and Prof. "Raymond Moley. The charges made by "Fellowship Forum," which was responsible for the canard that if Alfred E. Smith were elected president in 1928 he would have been the tool of the Vatican, is sup- pprted by an advertisemenf by Protestant Action, whose director is William H. Anderson, former superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League.

Recently his concern, The American Sales Co., 228 W. Broad St., added a complete commercial line bf Westinghouse Electrical Refrigeration units to meet the needs of every type of business.,

German-Americans Organize
to Combat Hitlerism
in America
CINCINNATI (WNS) —Resenting their identification with the pro-Nazi activities of a loud-voiced minority of German-Americans, a large group of German-Americans in this city have or¬ ganized "The Friends of' the Truth" which is dedicated to combatting Hitler¬ ism in America and to serving as a rallying point for all anti-Nazi German- Americans. While the names of the founders are being kept secret for' fear of retaliation upon their kinsmen in Ger¬ many, the new movement is expected to spread to all cities where there is a sub¬ stantial population of German extraction. The prominence of those identified with "The Friends of the Truth"" is believed to foreshadow a nation-wide effort to control of German-American societies from Nazis who have created the mis¬ taken impression that all German-Ameri¬ cans are friendly to Hitlerism.

Over 100 Dead as Anti-Jew¬ ish Rioting is Resumed in Algerian City
CONSTANTINE, ALGERIA (WNS) —Resumption ot the Arab attack on the Jews of this city has resulted in the death of over 100 persons and injuries to many hundreds more, most of the casualties being Jews. All tbe Jews who were able to do so have fled the city, where martial law now prevails, the streets be¬ ing patrolled by Senegalese troops and by airplanes circling over the scene.
Disorders had started several days be¬ fore, when Arabs, infftriated by an in¬ sult to a Mosque by a soldier said to be Jewisli, attacked tlic Jewish quarter, wounding many Jews and firing and loot¬ ing Jewish homes and shops. After two days of rioting order was restored for a time by troops summoned from other parts of Algeria, but the truce agreed upon by Jewisli and Moslem leaders was short-lived. Fighting broke but again, the Jews using impromptu weapons to defend themselves against the Arab at¬ tacks.
Jules Carde, Governor-General of Al¬ geria, which is a French protectorate, is reported to be on his way here from Paris. It is understood that the French authorities are in fear of a g^eneral Arab uprising, and are making every effort to keep the riots here from spreading over the country. A strict" censorship is be- ing maintained, and the military patrol of the city consists of Senegalese troops, who are uot likely to join the Arabs in an attack on the French.
The entire Jewish community of Al¬ geria, which numbers 100,000, or aboiit 1.5 per cent of the total .population of 0,500,000, is in a state ot panic that is intensified by the meagreness of the re¬ ports which the authorities permit to be issued.

One of the primary aims of the Thyssen group is to eliminate completely Jewish influ¬ ence in industrial and business life in Hitlerland. If Hitler should really try to run counter to this objective he would soon find out that he is the "absolute" ruler of Germany only as long as Fritz Thyssen wills it Anti-Semitism and Anti-Catholicism Seen Issues in Congressional Election Jewish Community Invited to Voliner Society Picnic Sunday The entire community is invited to attend the VoHner Society picnic this Sunday at Edgewater Park. WASHINGTON, D. C—That anti- Semitisni and anti-CathoHcism will be used as issues in the November con¬ gressional election hy those opposed to President's Roosevelt's New Deal is in¬ dicated by tlie "Fellowship Forum" notorious anti-Catholic and anti-Jewish monthly, which in its Atigust issue warns the country that the government at Wasliington is literally swamped with political Roman Catholics and Commu¬ nistic Jews who are in league with the Roosevelt administration to destroy the govenimciit. "I'ellowship Forum" which has been violently attacking the Roose¬ velt administration, declares that the New Deal "Is made up of alien-minded radicals. Ever ready to foment and use dangerous radicalism to wreck demo¬ cratic government, it is unqualifiedly with the New Dealers. Its hundred thrones, ils 8,000,000 votes and its 20,000,000 sub¬ jects iu this country arc solidly back of the New Deal. + * The outcome rests with the voters. * * * In spite of their solid block of Roman Catholics and radi¬ cal votes, which number many millions, in spite of millions more being fed from the public revenues, the enemy forces must be overwhelmed in the November election" Among those listed as forming' the "Jewish-Radical Roosevelt Personal Gov¬ ernment" are: Bernard M. Baruch, "un¬ official president"; Supreme Court Jus¬ tices Brandeis and Cardozo; Professor Felix Frankfurter, "chief legal adviser"; Samuel Untermycr, Jesse I.
