The Joint Drive Opens
When Dr. Chaim Weizmatin arrives ^^herc on May D.iy he will have the lull fc(J-operation of liis erstwhile opponent, l>r. Stephen S. Wise, in his efforts for liic United Jewish Appeal, we hear . . . SSW, incidentally, has cause to hope liiat the Zionist Actions Committee will ' lulorse his pet project, that of the World Jewish Congress . . . Amusing incident at the opening of the joint drive; Judge Julian W. Mack, rising to address the :isscinbled crowd, began, in accordance xvith the beat tradition, with: "Fellow- Jews'*—then suddenly he- remembered Ihat the salutation was hardly appHcable to League Refugee Commissioner James McDonald, the guest of honor/and in the excitement of the moment, as he bowed to the Commissioner corrected his Krceting to: "Fellow-Christians" . . . Wc take this opportunity to rectify one of those errors that will creep in: The ¦blackballing of Joseph C- Hyman for the secretaryship of the joint drive (UJA to you) was not as effective as the l)Iaeki)aUer, Nathan Straus, Jr., had hoped, Mr. Hyman's good friends of the JDC cainp having seen to it that he was named honorary secretary of the Appeal ... Our congratulations . . . Rabbinical Notes An announcement that will consider¬ ably lighten the burden of the mailman who serves Rabbi Samuel H. Gqldenson, of New York's Temple Emanu-El: Dr. Goldenson has chosen as. his assistant the young man who was whh him at Pitts¬ burgh—Rabbi Babel Glazer. son of the Orthodox Rabbi Simon Glazer . . '. Youthful Rabbi Nathan Perilraan, who assisted Rabbi Goldenson's three' prede- cessorsi Rabbis. Eneloi^ Krass and S.chulman, is, scheduled to remain with Emanu-El also . . . Rabbi I^uis. P. Browne, :who is one of America's best- known authors, adheres to the theory,that anti-Semitism is an-outgrowth! of the . ancient antagonism of the country yo¬ kel to the city slicker, the rustic-minded goyim being naturally disti-ustful of the urbanized Jew . . .But when he stated this theory.-at..a Jersey City lecture re¬ cently his audience refused to accept it, numerous listeners arguing vociferously against his point of view . . Dr, Browne believes tliat anti-Semitism can be abol¬ ished only by ur<banizing goyim and rural¬ izing Jews until a state of balance is achieved-which, he has figured out, by Cabbala and other occult methods, wil happen in May or June of tbe year li^275 of ,thc present era ;¦.
News From Newark That big party which was thrown for Dr. Albert Einstein at Newark last week was highly successful from the publicity point of view, but accomplished less than nothing toward raising funds for Ger¬ man Jewish relief . . . Cleveland's ^il- ' ver-tongued Rabbi A. H, Silver had to charter a special plane in order to be ¦ able to conduct services at his Temple on that Sunday morning and be.present at the Einstein meeting in the afternoon ... All pf which did not prevent the zealous youth who does the publicity for the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League from sending out a notice stating that Dr. Silver had presided over a meeting of this organization in New York bn that very same Sunday morning ... On the Nazi Front The purpose behind the visit of Am¬ bassador William E. Dodd to the home folks at Washington is to tell FDR just what Berlin, where Dr. Dodd represents the U. S., thinks of the anti-Nazi boy cott we're having . . . German'*Ambas¬ sador Hans Luther will sit in at the conferences, lest Dr. Dodd—-whoni our own Representative Hamilton Fish, Jr. considers dangerously liberal—prove. too objective in his statement of the prob' lem . . .11 Duce Benito having taken to arresting anti-Fascist Jewish intellectuals we are reminded that after all it was Mussolini whose example taught Dolly Hitler the tricks of the trade . . . The story that Marlene Dietrich gave finan¬ cial support to the Hitlerites, the birdies whisper, was Nazi-made propaganda in¬ tended to injure her hox-office appeal be¬ cause some time ago she offended a Nazi agent ¦ ¦ • The husband of I^ernice Chrysler Garblsch, daughter of Walter .(motor mogul). Chrysler, has been black- . balled from the ritzy Forest Hills Golf Club because he dared marry a Jewess , . . A wisecrack current in these iiarti declared that Germany's baseball score at present stands: One Hun, One Hitler, One Error ...

IVitfi iite.vorable forces slowly pushing ttie Jews into an isofalion commensurate jvitli thai ivhicli,i,they cvperieneed in mc- (tiez'al Europe, Mr. Stone raises ihc ffcr- tinent question 7vhetiter modern cmanci-\ pated Jews cail. even if they ivant to/ return- to a ghetto e.rislcttec—The Editor.;
There has been much soul-searching, sky-watching, and introspection of late. The cataclysm that has struck the Jews of Germany with an impact that has been felt in every corner of the globe in a resurgence of anti-Semitic feeling has squarely set down before world Jewry a critical situation of unparalleled grav-J ity. Those Jews who believed that Naziism and its insane preaching of vio¬ lence and destruction for German Jewry were confined to the territorial boundaries df the Reich, and thus regarded the problem with so much aloofness and impersonal ness, must now be sadly and rudely disabused. If Naziism was hitherto a world Jewish problem from the standpoint of relief. for the victims of the Hitler holocaust, it is now a world Jewish problem from the stand-' point of a threat against the rights and liberties of Jews everywhere, Naziism can no more be isolated in Germany than Communism in Soviet Russia. How ironical that the advanced system of in¬ ternational communication, which we hoped would bring greater understanding and enlightenment, should now be the carrier of a vicious propaganda preach¬ ing death and destruction for the Jews. With all their reputation for shewd- ness and acuteness the Jews are actually a most credulous and ingenious people. They accepted their emancipation one hun¬ dred years ago at its face value and blindly plunged into the job of proving their equality, if not . superiority. Although now and then various governments threatened to hurl them back into the ghetto, they clung blindly to their faith in tolerance,, enlightenment, and brotherly love and pushed on to new frontiers of public and professional achievement. Didn't they have a great contribution to make to the development .of modeirn civ¬ ilization? Wern't the People of the Book ! the prophets of social justice and peace? This was their mission and like the. sal¬ mon they would leap against the onrush- ing current to scale the heights their noble tradition had assigned to them.
But what has happened to the lofty ideals of social justice and peace? Social justice and peace have been outlawed. These Utopian pillars of the good life have been condemiied as the traducers of Mars and Wotan and the poisonous weap¬ ons of the Jews who sek to dstroy the world and all that is "Aryan" in it. To preach social justice and peace in the Year One of Hitlerism is to call down the wrath and suspicion of not only the shirted armies but of the millions who are, being subtly prepared for war and enforced injustice.
Thus has the great mission of the Jews' become a boomerang and all their strivings for the ideals of tolerance and equality suspect. Iri the light of the new psychology of international conflict aiid distrust and false economic theories built on force and suppression, the efforts of the Jew in any field are interpreted as sinister deeds in a diabolical plot spun by the Elders of Zion.
The delirious state of the nations of the world, and the desperate reversion to mob action of their people, are quite clearly direct consequences of the' eco¬ nomic debacle and the want and suffering that followed in its wake. For it is much more convenient to maintain and cover up a destitute ecoriomic system by re^ort-

ing to prejudice, violence, and fraud, than to overhaul it completely in an elTort to repair it. This is precisely what has happened in Central Europe today. And the Jew has once more been made the scapegoat. He has been dragged across the map of Europe like the proverbial red litrring. He has been held up'to a with¬ ering bombardment of slander, venom and spleen imhcard of in modern history. Tile Jews have been blamed for the war; ibey have been blamed for the depression. It seems that there is nothing left for the Jews to do but bring back prosperity. And tolerance and understanding will re¬ turn with it-
If no palpable improvement occurs in the economic system, the Jew will be faced with an ostracism almost as com¬ plete as the medieval ghetto. Germany has excluded the Jews from all its pro¬ fessions. Other countries have instituted a rigid numerus ciausus. The boycott against Jewish merchants is quietly but effectively carried on in various countries. Attacked as an alien and destructive cle¬ ment, the Jew is threatened with com¬ plete isolation and elimination from the general economic life.
Gradually but unmistakably the Jews are being pushed back into the ghetto. Freedom and equality of opportunity are closed to them. Once more the insur- mountaJile walls of the ghetto rise about them to isolate them from the rest of the world.
But is there a road back ? Can the Jews of today who have tasted of the political, economic, and cultural opportu¬ nities 6f the modern era return to the ghetto? Can they turn their backs on what we know as Western Civilization? And if so, to what will they turn? The ghettos'of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were built around the rich tra.- ditions of the Jewish religion and Jewish cuUure. Orthodoxy was the framework and scaffolding of these dark cities within cities. An ardent spirit qf faith and com¬ munion, with God which burned con¬ stantly and brightly in the hearts oE^ the ghetto Jews.
Can the Jew of today who has dis¬ carded his religion for the gospel of the Jewish mission recapture this spirit? Can he turn back the clock of time, and the clock of disillusionment and. skepticism and lose himself in the consolations of a I fervent belief in his destiny? Some will speak up arid point to Palestine and Zionism as the new faith that may be the foundation for a hew religion, a new life in the ghetto of tomorrow.'^ True, Palestine and Zionist ideology have a significant role in Jewish life; they fill it with meaning, with hope, with beauty. But even Palestine will not bear the se¬ verity of the test that will face it in the sorrowful enclosures of the ghetto. , Pal¬ estine has riieaning today because it is related to the life we lead as a part of the country in which we live;
Examined in the light of ghetto life, it will not be strong enough to become a faith—a religion to compensate us for our shattered illusions of equal rights.
The threat.of a return to the ghetto at this supposedly advanced stage of civ ilization must make us despair of the efficacy of science and education in the promotion of humanitarianism and good will.. It must once and for all convince us that the nations that promised the Jews equality in exchange for conformity were playing a colossal joke on the Jew¬ ish people.
Our only hope is that this monstrous wave of anti-Semitism is only a cycle very much as our econoriiic depression is part of the cycle of prosperity.—Copy- ¦ifihtl934.

Nazis Renew Anti-Jewish
Violence and Strengthen
Boycott
liJCRLlN (WNS)—The net of rc- .striction and persecution is being *lrawn tighter about the throats of German Jewry, and no casement is visible de¬ spite the repeated attempts of German ffuvcrnnicnt officials to sway foreign public opinion, it became evident this week as reports of violence against Jews on a wide front reached Berlin by under¬ ground sources,
Gunzcnhausen, Bavaria, was the scene of one of the most brutal raids the Nazis have conducted against Jews in recent nionths. A cafe brawl winch in¬ volved a single Jew became the signal for a', vicious attack upon all the 1,500 Jewish inhabitants of the town of 5,0IW. Storm troopers jailed scores of Jews on the pretext that they had insulted the government. Two Jews were cither mur¬ dered or committed suicide to escape brutal punishment. The prisoners were subsequently released.
The incident at Gunzenhausen is typi¬ cal of wliat has been taking place throughout Germany as the Nazis, cele¬ brating the first anniversary of the boy¬ cott against Jewish stores, vigorously re¬ newed their'effort to keep Aryans from buying in Jewish shops. National So-. cialist pamphlets are being widely dis- tributai, warning that "he who buys from a Jew should be hanged." In Hildesheim huge vans circulate through the streets all day carrying posters advising against purchase of goods from Jews.
Although German propaganda officials have been emphasizing abroad that Dr. , Kurt Schmitt, minister of ecoriomicg, is opposed to the stringent anti-Jewish boy¬ cott, Schmitt's views, if .accurately rer ported, have had no influence in actual Reich practice. Paul Goebbels, propa-: ganda minister, has publicly reprimanded Schmitt for his alleged philo-SemStic views.
It is being soniewhat more freely ad¬ mitted, however, that the boycott of Ger¬ man products abroad is causing heavy in- jury to-'the Reich's economic outlook. Large foreign industrial and pommercial organizations which have had branches in Berlin, havq closed their offices, in re¬ sponse to the sharp drop in demand for their products in home countries. . The only concession the government has made fo private complaints of her more con-^ servative business leaders has been to in¬ tensify propaganda abroad that prosecu¬ tion of Jews in Germany is on the wane.
Jack Myers, chairman,'was assisted at these services by Leon Berman, Abe Wolman, Frank Bayer and Morris Su¬ pran, who led the inmate choir in the chanting of the services.
Followhig the services a delicious Pass¬ over meal was served through the cour¬ tesy of the Ezras Noshim Society. The conimittee in charge were: Mrs. H. Shiff, chairman, and the Mesdames I, Garek and S. Weisman. This marked the 18th year that Passover meals were served Jewish inmates at this institution.
During the afternbon several talking pictures were shown, this having been arranged by Abe Wolman with the Para¬ mount Exchange,
