J. Hauptmann, . head of thc department, resented his anr ti-jNazi views. A' long'list of faculty, . student and ahimni witnesses fe.<itified. that Dr. Hauptmann, and his fellow pro¬ fessors are Nazis and that. they are scheming to. get rd of. Dr. Bergel be¬ cause he has attempted to counteract their anti-Jewish and Hitlerite preach¬ ings in the classroom, on the campus and ¦¦ in the dormitofies. . , Testifying in .his own behalf, Dr. Ber- : gel told the, comiuittee that Dr. Haupt- matin had utilized classro&in time to ena- , tol. the Nazi regime and to defend, its:. anti-Semitic policy. The, anti-Nazi teacher also asserted that after he had opposed Hitler's'policies in a debate with another college instructor before.the New Jersey League of Women Voters, Dr. Hauptmann reprimanded him, for spoil¬ ing the excelleJit effect that had.ibeen made on the meeting and told him that he Would never have been hired-had, it been known that he %vouId not change his views with the advent of the Hitler regime! Dr. Bergel charged that Haupt¬ mann. was actively engaged-in trying to win support for,Nazism amoiig the stu- , dents. Dr. Harold A. Vandorn, professor of , [Kilitical. science, said, that Bergel's .dis¬ missal was due to political. reasons ahd asserted that Hauptmann had' no concep-' tion of the principles of democracy.' ,' Ethel Greenvyald, of the class of 1932, told how Hauptmann had thrown a.'book at hef during a'classroom argument she had with him over the Nazi regime^ '., Several 'undcrgriaduates testified that Dr; Bergel was the best teacher in.the. Ger¬ man department, and insisted that his dis¬ missal was traceable to, Hauptmann's prejudice against him. JProfessor Evelyn : A. Clark of the department of classical languages' accused Dr. Hauptmann Oi, teaching Ngzi anti-Semitism, and her colleague. Dr.'William Oncken, profes¬ sor of Italian, denounced Hauptmann as an alien\vho is trying td slander Amerl- cau'citizens. :He also defended Dr. Ber¬ gel.' Dr. , Bergel's comp^tcncf as a te-icher was also defended by Miss Jihir- ley' Smith, professor-of classical lan¬ guages; Eu:.;ene , Huet, professor of French; and HollyM. Harrop and Mar¬ garet Regenhardt. undergraduates: Miss . Miriani West, professor of. economic^,' ¦ said that Or. llauptmanh was dissemi¬ nating Nazi propaganda aiul backed up. her accusations by citing, the impressions, of students and her pwii knowledge of ¦ his Hitlerite- leanings. All of this tes- tihitiny was in d'^ect contradiction to Hauptmann's "charge that. Bergel was be¬ ing dismissed because of incontt)etence. The most sensatioiial piece of evidence against Dr. Hauptmann caihe from Isa¬ bel Shackell, a 1984.graduate, who said Dr. Haiiptinann fiuhked her in two Ger- ¦ man courses because he thought she. was Jewish.: It was also asserted that Jew-' ish students in the (lerman department had to be exceptionally brilliant before they could get good marks, Charges were also made by Miss Alarion Short, ; editor of the.Campus News, college pa¬ per,'that Profes.fior Albert Mecder, the paiier's faculty adviser, had threatened her with dismissal if She printed student letters protesting the dismissal of Dr. Bergel. Anbther [irofessor was accused of having prevailed ui>on the New Brunsr wick papers not to give the matter any publicity. Other, students and members of the faculty also accused Hauptmann of Nazi leanings and , vigorously de-' funded Ur. Bergel. . IN a "Statement referring to the results thus far obtained for the United Jew¬ ish Fund of Columbus, Mr. E. J. Schanfarber said: "It is of the utmost urgency that every effort be made to bring this campaign to a successful con¬ clusion because of the great need on the part of millions of.our people over¬ seas whose fate and. future are entirely in the hands of their American brethren. The Jews of Germany have no one else lo whom to turn if we do iiot help them. paily their poverty igrows; additional numbers face bankruptcy; Daily, larger nuinbers are losing their jobs and eating up their meagre savings in an effort to save themselves from disaster. "Thousands of the refugees from Ger¬ many, tillable to find work in the coun¬ tries to which they fled, arc Hvi'tg ixom hand to mouth and unless we help them promptly they face a .terrifying fate. Thousands of Jewish young men and women, barred from the colleges, univer¬ sities and professional schools of Ger¬ many, are in desperate need of training for agrlcuhural and other manual pur¬ suits without which they have no hope for the future. In Poland and- other countries of Eastern, Europe millions of Jews are waging a bitter, almpst hope¬ less fight against destitution. "At the same time, thousands of Jews from Gerniany and other . European coMiitries are clamoring for an pppor¬ tunity to enter Palestine, where they would be welcomed as fellow-citizens and become absorbed in the productive forces that are rebuilding the Jand where Jews may live by rifiht and not on sufferance. "Throughout the United Stated men and women are responding to the United Jewish Appeal with a generosity that in¬ dicates a genuine understanding of the extraordinary problems which we are now called upon to meet and solve. This foreign relief is only one of the many humanitarian efforts embrac^ in the ap- l>eal of the United Jewish Fund of Co¬ lumbus, to which already over ^20,000.of the 125,000 goal has been subscribed."
