The confWence is expected to or¬ ganize a world congress of all Jews of Polish extraction. Some Jews of Polish origin, especially countries where thc in¬ fluence of Agudath Israel, Orothodox body, ia strong, are none too friendly to the conference because they fear that thc Polish government is opposed to it. Gellman That good fortune has been smiling on the Agudath Achim Synagogue in this respect is evident from the fact that the pcpple of Columbus for the past few years have been flocking there to hear Rabbi Mordecai Hirschsprung in his exception¬ ally interesting and educational sermons, which usually reach the peak of spiritual grandeur on the most solemn days of the Jewish calendar. This year in addition to Rabbt Mor¬ decai Hirschsprimg who is sure to repeat his farmer spiritual triumphs, the Agudath Achim Synagogue is especially happy to announce that Cantor R. J. Gellman, vfho since his arrival here has made quite a name for himself with his soulful sing¬ ing, will^^onduct services with a large iChoir on all the important holidays.' ^ Cantor Gellman is the possessor of an utmsually fine tenor voice which he uses with great skill and dexterity. It is veiy seldom that a city of the size of Colum¬ bus has the pleasure of hearing on the High Holidays a cantor of Mr. Gellman's caliber. In additiot^ to being a gifted cantor, Mr. Gellman is also a singer of taste andr^nsment;^ -"^Wforuellman has been training a large choir consisting of boys and adults for the past three momhs with very grat¬ ifying results, and there can be no doubt that 'he and his assistants will be ac¬ claimed' by all who hear them. Beginning Sunday, Septeinber IBth, be¬ tween 10 and 12 a. m., and every evening thereafter, between 8 and 10 p. m., and all day Friday, September 27th, from iO a, m., a committee wiU be at the syna¬ gogue to arrange the sale and assignment of seats. Ezras Noshim Meeting A very important meeting of thc Ezras !<oshim Society will be held Sunday after¬ noon at two o'clock in the yestry of the Agudath Achipi Synagogue, AM mem¬ bers are urged to be present. Named Co-Chairm^n of Jewish Agency Coundl LUCERNE (WNS-Palcor Agency) -Morris Rothenberg, president of the Zidnist Organization of America, was elected co-chairman with Lord Melchett of England of the Council of the Jewish Agency at the closing session of the Council's meeting. The political resolutions adopted by the Council, which followed those of the World Zionist Congress, included an en¬ dorsement of the Congress' resolution entrusting supervision of the German transfer agreement to the Executive and unequivocal opposition to the establish¬ ment at this time of a legislative council io Palestine. Resolutions identical with those of the Zionist Congress were adopted by the Council on immigration and hachshara. The Council also adopted resolutions recommending the establishment of an oflice for the de- \elopment of a Jewish Agency organ- ijation, providing that "no one shall be entitled to be elected to office or to he a representative on the Jewish Agency unless he has fulfilled his duty to the Keren Hayesotl," taking note of the de¬ sire of Non-Zionists toLhe represented on all institutions of the Jewish Agency, inclutling Palestine offices, demanding appropriate measures to secure a wide market for Palestiue products autl to overcome disabilities imposed by the Palestine Mandate on locxl industry by giving an open door lo all countries, and providing for the creation of electoral bodies for the Non-Zioniat section oi the Agency. At the annual election of oflicers held last Monday evening at the Broad Street Temple, Mr. I. H. Schlezinger was sig¬ nally honored by being elected to the presidency for the coming year. Mr. Schlezinger is one of the founders of the Temple and has already served as leader of this progressive spiritual insti¬ tution many times during the past thirty- fivq years. His re-election comes on the wave of a new era of prosperity under the able spiritual leadership of Rabbi Nathan Zelizer who was recently granted a three year term cdntract in recogni tion of his splendid work during the past four years, tluring which time the mem¬ bership has almost doubled. Too much cannot be said concerning the administration of Harry Masser whose term as president has just been completed. During his administration the Sunday School, Hebrew School and'o^her Temple activities have made imU^at progress, while the financial condition of the Temple has flourished to the extent of making it the best in the past six years. The following other, officers were also elected for the coming year: Vice Pres¬ ident, J. K. Bornstein; Corresponding Secretary, Ben Grossman; Financial Sec- reta^ry, Sol Roth; Treasurer, Nate Was-" serstrom. The Board of Trustees comprises: Harry Masser, ex-officio, Maurice Seigel, Reuben Abramson, Ben Borowitz, Mor¬ ris Hackman and Harry Winter. These officers will he installed with appropriate ceremony at the Annual Simchas Torah Banquet to be held on Sunday evening, October 27th. Of great interest to thc members and the visitors to this Temple during the coming High Holiday Season will be the interior of the Temple which has been newly decorated. Improvements have also been made in the acoustics of the Temple, The fifteen room building in the rear of the Temple which houses the Sunday School, Hebrew School and Cultural Classes has also been redecorated and re¬ furnished so as to make comfottable quar¬ ters for these Temple activities.' The entire cost of this beautification project has been made possible through the generous assistance of the Senior Sisterhood of the Temple and by the membership at large, under the most capable leadership of I. H. Schlezinger and the untiring zeal and labor of Hariy Masser and the committee which spon¬ sored it. Already a substantial registration has been had for the Sunday Schpo! and He¬ brew School which were begun last Sun¬ day. Registrations will continue every Sunday morning until the High Holidays and all members of thc Temple and friends who desire to enroll 'their chil¬ dren in the Sunday School or Hebrew School are urged to register at the earliest opportunity. For Information concerning registration in either the Sunday School or Hebrew School parents are requested to call the Rabbi at FAirfax 2762. The schedule of High Holiday Services with other announcements in connectiou to it will be announced in next Saturday's issue of the Chronicle. Non members contemplating attending tbe High Holi day Services are requested to make their reservations as sopn as possible by calling! Mr. Sol Roth at EVergreen 2925. THE WORLD'S WINDOW ''Rabbi Kook and Tir. Weizmann" By Ludwig Lewisohn tllils column Ib <wpyrtKbt Iw the Seven Ai*»^_ Fciklaro H>ndlrate. Itoproductlon In vhala or In pnrt tttflcMr forWdilon. An*- IntrlnBemoot on tills copyrlgflt wUl bo nrflBocatcd.) Our weaknesses as a people are many and disastrous. Moral cowardice and supine indifference ravage our masses. Wc would be lost and hopeless did not these folk-masses retain the power of producing saints and sages and leaders. These men arc often born in obscur.e vil¬ lages and towns far from the world's so-called centres of culture; tHeir par¬ ents arc usually humbte enough people; their youth is often somber and beset Dy need and struggle. But these leaders of ours emerge in their maturity into the great world of men and affairs and learning serene, unemblttered, aristocrats not by Virtue of specific advantages of birth or fortune or the world's favor, but by virtue of embodying id their va¬ rious ways and in harmony with their sharply defined character something uf tlie immortal spirit of Israel itself. They are onr strength. 'We know it, too. For it is among the amiable and reconciling traits of the Jewish people that it does in genuine sincerity of heart pay homage to its high and strong and saintly and devoted men. Bud Hadassah Meeting In Jerusalem lies dead today, barely alas at the age of three-score year and ten HaRav HaGaon Abraham Yitzchak Kook, since 1921 president of the Beth Dill Hagadol and hence Chief Rabbi cf the Ashenazik Kahal of Eretz Yisrael. With tears in his eyes Ussishkin said: "And now we have no father and no teacher," and characterized Rabbi Kook as rthe Amnd Haesh, the pillar of fire that was leading contemporary 'Israel. To the ears of many American Jews, of even quite good Jews, this characteriza-i tion of an orthodox rabbi from Lithu¬ ania will perhaps seem exorbitant But that will be so because so many West¬ ernized Jews have withdrawn themselves to their own hurt and to their own im¬ poverishment fi'om the permanent sources of Jewish power and Jewish creativity. The sources are in the broadest sense religious. For mlr'^^re- , ligion is an historical religion: ife^iid,Yre came into being simultaneously; Mople , and religion are like the obverse\4nd reverse of a coin, even as are by the same token the redemption of the Jewish people and the redemption of the land of Israel. Of this profound and central truth Rabbi Kook had the active and creative vision. From Bausk in Lithu¬ ania hc was called to Jaffa in 1903. Hc at once became active in the adaptation of religious law and custom to the exi¬ gencies of the new life (then at its faint beginnings) of our people. During the World War, first in Switzerland and next in London he took an active lart in the work that led finally to the issuing of the Balfour Declaration and to a new era, despite all woe and all tragedy, in ' the life of the Jewish people. And his ' vision of that new era was an entire vision. That is illustrated by the central story concerning hiin, which is as fol¬ lows: A leader in the Agudath Yisrael, people complained to him that the Zion¬ ist pioneers, the young ehalittsiui, did not observe all the regulations of the law. His answer was this: Wheii King Solo¬ mon was building the Beth Hamikdash, the temple, tbe workingmen, the par-- penters and the stone-masons, went" in and out of the Holy of Holies vilikHx even the High Priest hesitated at all times to enter. Of an equal sanctity as the building of the temple is the rebuild¬ ing of the land of the fathers. That work is Ai'odaih kodesh, holy work, and hence the pioneers are by their verj 'toil exercisiiig the highest duties of their faith. Thus iit is no wonder that Rabbi Kook was the great conciliator, that he stood above party and faction, tliat he became a symbol, as it were, of those central sanctiliEb of Israel which the ages do but render more potent and more luminous. The other newa o£ the week is hap¬ pier. This year in addition to Rabbt Mor¬ decai Hirschsprimg who is sure to repeat his farmer spiritual triumphs, the Agudath Achim Synagogue is especially happy to announce that Cantor R. J. Gellman, vfho since his arrival here has made quite a name for himself with his soulful sing¬ ing, will^^onduct services with a large iChoir on all the important holidays.' ^
Cantor Gellman is the possessor of an utmsually fine tenor voice which he uses with great skill and dexterity.
