Goldenberg Was Also Honored at Gala Aliair Arranged by thc East Brofid Street Temple A grateful community expressed its admiration, respect, and love for a for¬ mer leader Wednesday evening, August I4th, in the social hall of the E. Broad St. Temple, when 200 men and women gathered together for the farewell ban¬ quet sponsored by the Tifereth Israel Congregation to bid God-speed to Rabbi and Mrs. Solomon Rivlin ori thc eve of Jheir departure for the Holy Land. Tlie opening remarks were made by I. H. Schlciinger, general chairman of the ar¬ rangements committee, who spoke in glowing terms of Rabbi Rivlin both as a man and as a spiritual leader. He then turned over the gavel to Dr. B. W. Abramson wlio. acted as toastmaster. ' Dr. Abramsoit reviewed the eight years of incessant toil and devotion of Rabbi Rivlin during, the past eight years aniong all groups in this city. He declared that in losing the; Rabbi the city of Coitimbus was suffering a loss which is irretriev¬ able; for,, he - asserted, the Rabbi pos¬ sesses riot only extraordinary gifts as a scholar and educator but also as a leader in the Zionjst movement as well as other ideaUstic projects. It was the fond hope and prayer of Dr. Abramson that the community keep in constant touch -with Rabbi and-Mrs. Rivlin after their', ar¬ rival in the HolyLand. We need their counsel and their inspiration now more than ever, he declared. ¦' .Other speakers who were called upon to express their sentiments with regard to Rabbi and Mrs. Rivlin-as well aS Mr. A. Palestirie perma^ nently, the Golderibergs will spend only three months in Palestihe and theii re¬ turn hom'c. Hitler Pledges War On Foes of Nazi Regime^ Rebuf¬ fing Schacht's Plea to End Hounding of Jews Streiche/s Invasion of Berlin Alarms. Jews as New Perse¬ cutions Spread Throughout Country; Jews Face Starvation in Small Towns BERLIN (WNS)-Any slight hop6 that may have existed in certain peren¬ nially optimistic circles that the wave of anti-Jewish persecution and discrimina¬ tion might be mitigated was completely dashed when no less a person than Hitler himself refused to accede to a request by Dr^; Hjalmar Schacht, head of the Retchsbank and economic dictator, that thc war on the Jews ;be' called off. Al¬ though warded by. Schacht tliat the anti- Jewish crusade was doing irreparable damage to German trade and commerce at home:and.abroad a.nd endangering the very existence of the Nazi regime. Hit¬ ler declined to do anything to re^tralit his fanatic followers, thereby indicating that he is himself in favor of the, com¬ plete destruction of German Jewry. Mak¬ ing' his first public appearance iii seyeral baiter's Berlin debut will be the signal for a new outbreak of anti-Jewish vio¬ lence. In anticipation of Streicher's ar^ rival the. red-Jainted glass cases con¬ taining copies of Dei* Stuermer have been set up in every part of Berlin. For¬ eign correspondents haVe been refused tickets to the Streicher demonstration, a fact which is doing much to'aggravate the alarm of the Jews, While Berlin awaits further develop¬ ments expected to ensue from Streicher's appearance, reports from the provincial areas indicate that the Jews outside of Berlin are rapidly being forced into, a condition where they are faced with ac¬ tual starvation. In scores of towns the municipal autliOrities liaVe adopted ordi¬ nances forbidding ¦ Jews to own or. lease land, .and warning that "anybody who weeks, Hitler ^ave his formal .blessing jrents German soil to a non-Aryan tb to the war.on the foes of the Nazi re-;earn money shows ;egdtism is stronger gime, at home and abrdad^when he said jin Iiim than the voice of blood." Fore- in a speech at the celebration of the, ISth shadowing similar action throughout the anniversary of the Rosenheim branch of ; Reich, the peasant leader, of Brunswick the Nazi party that_ "those who arc'published an drder depriving Jews ol the against us need not deceive themselves.! right to do business with Gentiles. Iii We have never shrunk from'combat. If they want it they can have it. We will crush them in such a ^way that they will abandon for the next 14 years all idea of continuing the struggle." Meanwhile Berlin Jewry was looking forward with unconcealed anxiety to the forthcoming visit of Julius Streicher, high priest of anti-Semitism, who is scheduled, to make his tirst public appeai:.- ance in the capital at a monster anti:* Jewish; demonstration in the Sportspalst. While Jewish leaders Jierp are taking ali possible precautions, to keep the Jewish people .but of sight during Streicher'9 presence,: it is feared that the chief; Jew- Father of MrS. Anna Gertner Buried in Brooklyn Word was received Monday by Co¬ liimbus relatives of the death of Rabbi Vigdpr Regenbogen, 72, a leader of Chassidic Jewry in the United States, Friday in a Brooklyn, N. Y., hospital. ', He was the father of Mrs. Anna Gert¬ ner, 969 Oakwood Ave.; the grandfather' of Louis A. Gertner, 793 Bulen Aye.; Dr. Abraham. Gertner, 2084 Neil Ave., and Irving M.,and Benjamin B. Gert¬ ner of the Oakwood Ave. home, and the great-grandfather of Marcus. T. Gertner, ,703 Bulen Ave. ¦ For the last 10 years. Rabbi Regen¬ bogen was the representative of the grand rabbi of the Chassidic sect in this country and head of the Czortkower Synagogue. He was a widely know4i Talmudic scholar. At.funeral services in Brooklyn, his coffin was carried through the streets on the shoulders of pallbearers to Israel Zion Cemetery, INFANTS' HOME OF OHIO The officer^ and board members are very grateful to the "following who en¬ tertained the children and to those who made contributions: Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity entertained the children with an outing at the Zoo through the co¬ operation of Dr. Samuel Swerdlow, Mr. I Edfe^Sciilezinger, Mr. Willard Levin and Mr. Max Aarons. ' . A donation from the Bauer Baking Co., in honor of Allan Wolf's fifth birthday, the children were presented with a,singing canary and cage. Refreshments were also served.. Mrs. Edward E, David entertained the children, with a treat. Iu memory of Sigmund Stein from Mrs. Rebecca Loeb; in memory of Fer¬ dinand J. Ach of Dayton, from Mr. and Mrs. Milton C. Stern, Mr. Ed. Rauh, Dr. and SBrs- Leo Schram; in jnemory of August ^ammel of Lexington, Ky.^ from Mr. and Mrs. Morris E. Stern, one.town a Nazi mayor was dismissed froni office because he, admitted patroniz¬ ing a Jewish store. In consequence of the ever-tightening boycott the Jews in the smaller towns are in a desperate state. Recipients of unemployment relief have been threatened that government aid will be withdrawn from them. There arc also numerous instances reported of Aryan stores recusing to sell food to Jews,; indicating that the Jevifs will be forced to-shift for themselves. Propia- ganda Minister: Goebbels has launched a drive against Jewish business firms mas?- querading as Aryan establishments. House of Representatives of Massachusetts Condemns Nazi Persecutions BOSTON (WNS)—In the face; of a protest by Baron Kurt von TeJ>pelskirch, German consul-general, the , Massachu¬ setts House of Representatives unam-' mously adopted a resolution condemning Nazi'persecution of racial and religious minorities.. Informed that the German diplomat planned to forwarcf the resolu¬ tion to Ambassador Luther for possible action,: Representatives Thomas IDorgan bf Boston and Albert E. Morris of Ever¬ ett, authors of the resolution, issued a statement declaring that "in regard to fundamental matters as religion, it is the duty of every nation, to see that it iS protected because without religion We re-. vert to the old pagan days." Baron von Tippelskirch had called ¦ the resolution impolite and discourteous and suggested that "with conditions, as they are in fhe United States it seenris to me that the House should' give its attention to. solv¬ ing domestic problems instead of those of the German Reich."^ The text oi-' the resolution is as fol¬ lows: "Whereds, it is reliably repoirted that. certain inhabitants df Germany are being persecuted on dccount of their re¬ ligious faith and nationality to an extent abhorrent to modern civilization, there¬ fore, be. it resolved that the House of. "Representatives of the General Court of Massachusetts affirms this cqnvicition and belief that freedom and equality of man¬ kind; regardless of race, color 6r creed, is indispensable to the maintenance of any;modern civilization, and views with alarm any violation of these sacred prin¬ ciples.'' D Lack of Funds May Fbrce America to WithdriEiw From Olynapics ¦ NEW YORK; (WNS)—Faced with, the necessity of raising $300;000 to de¬ fray the cost bt sending an Anicrican team to the ,1930 Olympic Games in Bery lin, the American Olympic Committee may be forced to .curtail the size of the American; team, if one is .sent,-or .to ad¬ mit that it is financially unable to send a team because the rising tide of opposition to American participation in the. Berliii games is making it virtually impossible tor the A. O. C. to. obtain the required funds. From sources close to the Ariierir Can Olympic Committee, whose officials are still defying widespread non-sectarian protests against' sending ari American team to Berlin, r it, is learned that" the Committee may decide that it is not worth while sending an iirirepresentative team if the present agitation against send¬ ing any team at all interferes with Olym¬ pic fund-raising. Off the record ofiicials of the American Olympic Committee ^re guardedly admitting that the pressure to reconsider the acceptance of, Germany's, invitation is becoming too great tp with, stand. There is a growing probability that next winter's convention of' the Amateur Athletic Union will force thc A. O. C. .to repudiate its acceptance. This would mean the end of the 103<} Olympics because without an American team the Berlin games would not be.rep¬ resentative. Technical difficulties make it impossible to transfer the 193C ganies to another. country at such short notice, arid hence. the .games will be abandoned en¬ tirely. ; . ^ BUDAPEST (WNS)—"The existence of niimerous restrictions that would pre-. Vent Jews ^"from 'qualifying for the Ger¬ man Olympic tearii; was admitted by George Fischer, manager of the German team at the sixth international university games now being, held.hcre, when he was asked why there were no Jews aimong'the 230 German athletes. "There \ are no Jews on. Germany's team of riiore than 200 meri andwomen, because. non-Aryans in Germany do not possess the Aryan com¬ petitive team spirit and io the trials for the games did not 'shbvv themselves as good as or better than, those selected to represent us here. Germans are not so undiplomatic as to prevent Jews from participating either here or at the Olym¬ pic Games if thiy are better than other candidates." In the same breath, however, Fischer conceded, that various devices had bceri employed to prevent Jews from showing at their best in the various Olym¬ pic trials, even when they were not en¬ tirely excluded. Pennsylvaniai Outlaws Discrimination on Grounds of Race, Creed or Color HARRISBUHG, PA. (WNS)—The constitutionality of A. new law that pro¬ hibits discrimination in public ' places against, any persoii, because of race, creed or,color i|iay be tested by the hqtel and restaurant^men of Pennsylvania. Passed by both houses of the legislature and signed by Governor Earle, the act, which becomes effective September 1, stipulates specifically that there shall be nodiscrimi- nations in inns, taverns, roadhouses, hoteU, restaurants, buffets, saloons, ba^'rodms,' ice cream parlors, coiifectioneries, soda foun¬ tains, drug stores,' dispensaries, clinics, hospitals, bath-houses, theatres, motion picture houses, airdomes, roof gardens, inusic halls, race courses, skating rinks, anuisemcnt and recreation parks, fairs, bowling alleys, gymnasiums, shooting gal¬ leries, billiard and pool parlors, public libraries, kindergartens, primary and sec¬ ondary schools, high schools, iacademies, colleges and universities, garages" and all public conveyapces such as street cars and buses. Clubs arid other places of a pri¬ vate nature are exempt from the law, which carries with jt penalties of $100 to ifSOO and imprisonment of 30 to 90 days. Although the law is primarily intended to end discrimination against Negroes, it will be applicable to those discriminating against Jews. ' C. J. W. Pre-Parly Before the fall activities get under way, the local 'section, Council of Jewish Women will entertain its members with a pre-party in the form of a tea Wednesday, Sept. 18th. .at the Bryden, Road Temple. Mrs. Emil Brudnow of Cleveland will be the guest speaker. She is a member of the National Board and past president of the Cleveland Section. Mrs. Brudnow has addressed many Council audiences in various part's of the country, including Columbus. The Council extends an invitation to old and new members to attend the tea. Hundr,ed8 Expected at Voliner Society Picnic Sunday From all indications a huge crowd is expected to attend the Voliner Society picnic to be held this Sunday (tomorrow) at Edgewater Park. A full program has been planned to provide entertainment for everyone: Many valuable prizes wilt be given away and refreshments will be served. There will be free transporta¬ tion by bus from the end of the Living¬ ston Ave. car line to the park, The first bus will leave at 1 p. m., continuing every Nomination and Election of Hebrew School OHicers Monday Evening . A ^special' nieeting for the .nomination, and election of officers of the Columbus Hebrew School will be held next Mon¬ day evening, August 19th, at 8 p. m., at the Hebrew School building, 5.58 East ¦Rich Street. :' Every person who is a' subscriber or. a contributor, to the Columbus Hebrew School i?,,eligible to vote.' There are some four or. five hundred people in the city of Columbiis, who have paid money to the school duringJthe past year, cither by contribution or subscription. Every one of these persons is urged to come next Monday night to participate in the nomination and election of officers. for the coming year. The leadership of the schciol during the ensuing year depends upon the response of the community to this, call for Voters. According to local Jewish leaders, the greatest trouble with'.the Hebrew School in the past has been the lack of interest on the part of the community. .They say a great many good subscribers are will¬ ing, it seems, to jet a handful !of. people do all the work connected with the organization and running of the schoof. The Chronicle believes that it is .high time that Columbiis Jews wake up to their responsibility to their children, with regards to Hebrew education. ¦ There is no, reaispn, therefore, why a lar'ge repre¬ sentative group should not come to the meeting Monday night and participate in the nomination and election of officers for the ensuing yiear. . OES knowledge help? It does in the outer world of fact. If the brakes of the car need to be tightened or the frigtdaire defrosted and you know how, that knowledge is .trans¬ formed into physical manipulation and a definite result follows. When it comes , to the. processes of the mind knowledge, is both harder to come by and: harder to use becauise he who tries to know and tries to . use his knowledge is afflicted, with, the same, maladjustments as the ob¬ jects of, his proposed knowledge. There's the rub. You and I have neither loose brakes nor do we suffer from imperfect defrosting, , But we are alL of us; more, ' or less touched by the saine maladies of . the soul which we. try to understand in others. For instance:, we all "project". What is "jprojectioii''? It is the displacement of one . emotion. by another;-it is the attempt to substitute an outer for an - inner cause of irritatioii; it is the sub- . stitution of a fictive enerriy whom you do not fcai- for' the real, enemy who is; too strong for you. Haii-e you ever, afteir a particularly liardMay of conferences and directors' meetings when all the. .forces of your world seemed stubbornly; to be conspiring, against you—have yqti ever ."taken it out" on the family or the ; servants or both? Well, that's projec¬ tion. The "it" that-you "took .out'' on those who couldn't very well hit back had evidently nothing to.do with thpm— neither with their faults nor with their, virtues. 'They were simply at hand and comparatively defenceless 'and so .yoii "took out" on thern;;some .irritation or frustration caused by ari "it"'in the outer world. Madame, did; you ever scold the children.because the dressmaker bungjed her job? Or felt like iiagging ydiir hus-;, band because theGoodmans, desjpite; the depression, had just bought a new Pack¬ ard whereas you are still driving theold Chevrolet?-And that, ;although ;yoti knew perfectly that your: husband .was very ably doing his utinost? Well. ^ .'. Yes,; we all project. But thosp. of us; who are quite sane never.lose a fair de-. gree of insight into the process.. A* .least later, after our irritation has worked it¬ self out we recognize that those on whom we took it out had notliing. to,do \vith¦. causing it and we make amends directly or indirectly;. We apologize; we retractj, wc send flowers and toys. But there, are people who have lost all ¦ insight into the character of this process and who really' believe that those en , whom they take it out have caused the 'it" in, qiiestion. Such people, \yhO live in that particular kind of a- delusional". world, are neurotics or. paranoiacs. They burii helpless old women and call them - witches; they lynch' negroes; they per- ' secute jews.: ! Ezras Noshim Meeting: The Ezras Noshim Society will hold a yery important nieeting Wednesday afternoon, August 21 at, at 2 o'clock, at the Agudath Achim synagogue. Plans for a rummage sale, and events for the coming holidays will be discussed. Every member is urged to be present. Shelter Home Banquet Nov. 17 The Hachnosis Orchim Society wishes to announce that its annual banquet has been, set for Nov. 17th. All organiza¬ tions are asked to keep this date open. Free Loan Society Meeting -I have before me a particularly strik¬ ing and clear photograph Of, Adolph.Hit-: ier and of Julius Streicher, the chief of the Jew-baiters. Hitler is gazing upward , with a rapt and dreamy, gaze. Yoii have ^ seen that gaze in asylums. He has the delusion of' grandeur; he ia saviour, leader; he is Baldur. The paper-hanger has to compensate and over-compensate for having been a paper-hanger.' Al^ his former humiliations > and frustrations have to be transformed, into the very madness of self-glorification and also into;; hatred for someone who once inflicted on him his humiliations and frustrations. It was, of course, his fellow-Germans who did. that! But to take it out on them would ruin his leadership and prick the bubble of his delusion of grandeur. ¦ So he takes "it" out on the defenceless Jews. Streicher is a coarser and lower type. He is a fat man. He tries to look stern and succeeds in looking stupid. His eyes are the eyea of an angry animal. A stave-nature come into power. Now nb one is so brutal as a revengeful slave. But he has the astuteness of the delu¬ sional arid the vulgan If.one knew his history one would be sure to find that he had risen from a very low psychologi¬ cal and spiritual stratum, that he had been afflicted by intolerable fears aiid maladjustments and perversions. Now he is fat to bursting in body and crammed with delusional projection-mechanisms to ; the brim of what he pills his mind, He is one mass of hatred and rancor for a thousand reasons that he himself (so. shamefiil ^rp most of them) represses, drives out of consciousness. If he eould half hour. Bring your family out early, her daughter's recent marriage. The Ladies' Free Loan Society will hold its regitlar meeting ori Tuesday eve¬ ning, August 20th-, at 7:30 o'clock in the social hall of the Agudatli Achim syna¬ gogue. ' ' After the meeting Mrs. S, Zeldin will entertain with refreshments in. honor of no longer hateand bedevil the defense- (Coniinued on page 9)

In scores of towns the municipal autliOrities liaVe adopted ordi¬ nances forbidding ¦ Jews to own or. lease land, .and warning that "anybody who weeks, Hitler ^ave his formal .blessing jrents German soil to a non-Aryan tb to the war.on the foes of the Nazi re-;earn money shows ;egdtism is stronger gime, at home and abrdad^when he said jin Iiim than the voice of blood." Iii We have never shrunk from'combat.
