(Question In "KeHolveif Tliiit World Jewish ('(Higrr<?s Will Itc nctrimcntnl To American Jewry"
GOERING TO MARRY DIS¬ TANT RELATIVE or JEWISH EDITOR
Urges Jewish Women to Work
For Educational Approach^
To Jewish Problems
On Monday evening, Marcji 25th, at thc \yinding Hollow City Club, 142 Par¬ sons Ave., the Jewish community of Co¬ luinbus will have an opportunity .'to hear discussed by intelligent, progressive B'nai B'rith speakers, the question "Resolved that a Wurld Jewish Congress will .he detrimental to Anicrican Jewry." This question has been confronting the Jews of America as well as those of foreign countries for a number of years. In this country Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, spiritual leader of itlic Free Synagogue and Presi¬ dent of the JcwisU Institute, of Religion, has been championing the cause of a ,World Jewish Congress in every'section of the country. He has spoken on its behalf in Los Angeles, as well as in Bos¬ ton, in New Orleans as. well as in Chi¬ cago. He believes firmly and conscien¬ tiously that a congress representing every Jewry of the World will do more to pro¬ tect and defend the Jew and maintain his status as a: citizen than any other inovc- niciit .that has as yet heen launched. .Co¬ inciding with this view, Louis Lipsky and Morris Rosenberg "have issued nu¬ merous lengthy statemiints in Jewisli newspapers of thirty-six states. , .
On the other hand Dr. Cyrus Adler, President of the.Ainerican Jewish Com- thitfee, has denounced the activities of Rabbi .Wise. He declares that a \VOrld Jewish Congress would not only endan¬ ger the status of Jews in America but also do incalculable harm td the Jews of Eiigland, France, Germany, Belgium, and other "foreign countries. 'Judge Horace Stern of, Philadelphia ;and Adolph S; Ochs, piiblifehcr of the i>Iew York Times, agree with Dr.; Adler.'They believe that'-the Americari Jewish Com¬ mittee in cdiijuhction with the Constitu¬ tion Grand Lodge of B'nai B'rith is in a position to take care of all Jewish needs as far as political, social and eco¬ nomic rights are concerned. \ v-'A---dcbtitinff---team'^pre8eiitmg'~^:i Cleveland B'nai B'rith Lodge will arriye here oil Monday, evening, March .25th, to champion the cause, of a World Jewish Cpngress. A. local, team, composed of Bud L. Moser and Harold Zelko, will oppose this team, . Some of the outstand¬ ing Jews inthis community will. serve as judges for this debate. The name of thc chairman will be 'annoiiiiced in the next issue of the Ohio Jewish Chronicle. The open foruni 'comniittee. of. Ziori Lodge which is sponsoring the debate is headed by David L. Durschnitt. This committee looks forward.to tlie inceting on March ,25th, with the greatest "antici-; pation. They expect a tremendous turn-' out; for the meeting will be open to the public, men and women, Jews and.Gen¬ tiles.' , ¦ ¦
The meeting of Zioii Lodge which took place Monday evening, March llth, took the form of a stag sliioker and ath¬ letic show. Through- the ctiurtesy of C, R, Morrctt of the sta it of the Central Y. M. C. A., three boxing bouts, of ex- traordiiriry interest were presented to the delight of all present. Among the participants were' ZaL Rosenfeld, Ivan Tope and Ed Hess,. These men were winners in the recent Golden Glove "Jpur- nament, .'
Through the efforts of Brotliei' Joe Skiikin, two splendid wrestling bouts, were also presertted.
: Prior to the Athletic Show a number of important B'nai B'rith problems were brought'up for the consideration of the Lodge. An interesting address was .de¬ livered by Brother Morris M. Levison who has recently returned : from an; ex¬ tended visit in Hot Springs,. Ark., where he had occasion to visit-the great-B'nai B'rith hospital oj: that city. Brother Levison spoke in glowing terms of the wonderful work the Leo N. Levi hospi¬ tal has accomplished in the past twenty years, and declared that Zion' Lodge members should feel honored for their asspciation with the Order which has es¬ tablished and maintained thi^ great in¬ stitution of healing these many years.
Don't forget the great debate between the Clevcjan<l B'nai B'rith Lodge and Zion Lotlge on Monday evening, March 25tli, at the Winding. Hollow City Club. This will, be a red letter event.

The celebration of Purim, the Feast of Lots, will begin on Monday evening,'] March 18th, The significance of the fes¬ tival-looms large throughout the history ot the Jewish people. The story of the Book of .Esther upon which it is'founded bears a signal message today to ]ey/ty- arid the world at large. ,. i
According to the Book of Esther, Aha-j suerus, the kiiig of Persia and Media,;; had deposed his queen Vashti and chosen Esther, a beautiful Jewish \orphan, for his riew queen. About the same, time, King Ahasuerus likewise had raised his general, Haman, to the position of Prime Minister. Ilamati.' had had a dispute with Mordecai, a cousin of Quceti Es¬ ther, aild he nia:de his private quarrel a basis of hatred against the entire Jewish people.
One day Haman sat in council with King Ahasuerus. When Haman saw/ that the king was pleased with his;advice,. he brought charges agaijist the ; Jewish people living in Persia; falsely.accusing ¦tliem of being a turbulent, rebellious people, inclined to disloyalty, but wit'hput mentioning the. name of; ithc pepple. . ,The kiiig was disturbed. Hainan proriiised .to bring, 10,000 silver talents into the royal cofifei-s for permission to exterminate this grorip. .And without knowing, the 'nam6 of thc-people. King Ahasuerus granted to Hainan. povvfer to confiscate thejr prppj erty arid to exterminate: the jews within his dominion. : '¦ ^ji
personal risk Esther c^me unbidden, into the king^'s presence and invited him and Hainan to dine with her ori two succes¬ sive evenings. The king agreed. Haman vvas overjoyed; ; ' ¦ . At, the second feast, Esther toltl, ^he king of Haman's trickery and said it was her. own people that Haman sought to destroy; The king became furious, and ordered Hainan to be hanged on the gib¬ bet that,'in anticipation, he had prepared for Mordecai. The decree of Ahasuer.us permitting the externiiiiatlou of the Jews could not, accordiiig to the lavys. of the Mcdes. and Persians, be recalled. But the king issued .a .proclamation giving the Jews.of Persia permission to organize for self-defense, arid they fought and routed their attackers. ¦ To coriniieriiorate this, deliverance from the hands, of Haman, the Jewish people established the fourteenth of the moiilh Adar as a day. "of feasting and joy,.and of sending presents one. to aiiother and gi.fts to the poor." The festival typifies the false accusations made against Jeivs in every :geiieratioii.. Its chief riiessage, however, is that it recalls the triumphs of the Jewish people over injustice and tyranny. .
LEVINSON OFFERS PLAN TO SETTLE WAR DEBTS AND CUT ARMAMENTS
liuid. .Stressing, the fact that the most ctiiiuiifin and accepted way- bf dealing with' such problems in tht past has been thtdiigh 'protests and mass, meetings,, Mrs, Hrill proi'wsed that the Council of Jew- tbW Wonien lead; tl#. way in turning to lltii Jcwisli rescarcii bureaus and experts in order to find the solution to these jiroltlcnis. . , ' .¦
