"The r,iiniorcd 'New Depl' for thc je,ijv in Germany is only a trjck to gain tbc sympathy of liberals over all thc world," aaid Dr. Jacob R. Marcus, noted authority on Naziism, in an interview yesterday. "The facts are that conditions for the.Jews in Germany arc getting worse, and the Jews in the "Saar, now part of Germany, will share their fate The :i>olicics of the Hitler regime re¬ main unchanged; They, will be enforced. in the Saar as they have been in Ger many.
"The 90 percent vole for Germany is not. a vote for Hitler....It is the desire of tbe Saar Germans tojje reunited with 'The Fatherland' regardless of who is in power. Undoubtedly a large number of thcSe votes were gained by coercion. A great many Germans decided to vote for Hitler believing that sooner or; later the Saar valley would revert to German control. Tbe fear that any anii-Hitler stand taken how would result in punish¬ ment when the Na^ii government later assumed control led thcni to cast tlieir vote fur the present .German govern^ ment. ' . ' .' ' ¦
"A vote free froni coercion br .f.aar would probfibly have resultcil'in a GO-fiJ percent vote in favor of Germany."
Dr. Marcus : believes, that thc IsTaii government will; maintain the agreement with the. League of Nations' to protect all minorities for one year. However, this, will he carried out in a formal sense only, Xo acts- of violence Will be com¬ mitted against the, Jews, with the pos¬ sible exception, of the proihincht anti- Hitler leaders, The pact w'iU be kept because Hitler won't ri'sk intervention by Prance .or the League of. Nations,' Nor docs be want.to .arouse public.ppiiiiovi as his actions against the liberiils aiid the Jews in Germany did.-
"Actually we may expect thc Nazi bu. reaucrats hi the Saar to set to, work' with the Nazi party to ehmhiate all anti- Hitler groups from; all positions 61 au-

isione of the first, great victories' which Hitler has achieved since , coming to power;,It is in line with his policy^ and win strengthen his npne-too-sqund posi¬ tion with his won constituents. It will help .-him over a dangerous winter,"
Dr, MafCus believes the job of assim¬ ilating the Saar into Nazi Germany will be a diiScult oiie for several, reasons. First, the Saar has,up till now. enjoyed a. free, liberal and democratic govern¬ ment. It wilt be difficult to,impose the Nazi autocracy upon it. Secondly, French ¦ currency ' is fnore stable .than Gernian currency. The task of read¬ justing tlie economic life of. the Saar will be- very difficult,' Thirdly,., the French; border, Which has always been open to the Saar, economically, "will now beclosed. Fourthly, in becoming allied with Germany, the Saar will.have to,ad¬ just itself -to a government that is in a state of political unrest, ¦ and one that is not in syrnpathy with the religion of the mapjority of,its inhabitants: Catholic¬ ism. .- ¦ ,¦'
"Unless. Hitler succeeds in pacifying the Saar inhabitants, they are a poten-: tial center of great.unrest and opposition to his regime,"'said Dr. Marcus.
Dr. Marcus holds out no hope for the future of the Jew in the Saar. At the expiration of the year's agreement.with the League, the non-Aryan law will be¬ come effective there as it now is in Ger¬ many; The possibility of emigration is slight, since no country has. opened its doors to the Jew.
The only, land to-which they liiay tiii- grate is Palestine, and Dr. Marcus esti¬ mates that the, maximum ;number of Saar 'Jews .who might obtain: permission to enter' Palestine is 1,000... This would be 25 i>ercent of the Jewish population of the Saar. The rest must "struggle along as best, they: can. Their one hope is that the large number.of Saarlaiidcrs in opposition to'Nazi doctrines.will ber friend them.'
Dr. Marcus is the author of "The Rise and Destiny of the German Jew' (Uiiiou of American Hebrew Congrega¬ tions), in which he traced the develop¬ ment of the Nazi philosophy and its, practice by the ,?Iitler government- In his book Dr. Marcus forecasts a. gloomy future for the Jew in Germany. Thc Jew in the Saar can anticipate,a similar 'fate. . ¦¦ "

Jubilee Heads Laud Efforts of Columbus Jewry
There are so many people who are either directly or indirectly responsible for the success .of United Jubilee that all we can do ,is to take this opportunity to issue a blanket note of appreciation, It might justify.your efforts to know-that you were influential in: (1) Assembling . under one roof the greatest crowd of Jewry Columbus has ever known; (2) Causing the unification of all classes of Jewry fbr a strictly local Jewish cause; (3) That substantial funds were raised for a worthy cause, the" Columbus He¬ brew School; (,4). That youth was given the opportunity to express itself,,,'
Again may we express to Columbus Jewry the, Committee's as well as' our own personal sincere gratitude. ; \ B, L. MOSER, ..
