Business Men To Call Off Boycott; Says Jews Have Not Been Harmed Economically Federalization of Two Local Bldg. and. Loan Companies Progresses \::ik ^ -^iim^^H ^^^HB^ ^9H| ^ 1 MORRIS LOPPER Since February 28, the date when the Hilltop Building aud Loan Association -and The Franklin Savings and Loan As¬ sociation announced that the government had approved their preliminary applica¬ tions to convert into Federal Savings and Loan Asiiociation, "Federalization of Building and Loan Companies" ha.'s been the most important and most dis¬ cussed local subject. There is hardly a family in this community which is not vitally interested in local building antl loan companies The people of Colum¬ bus have more than sixty-five millions of dollars on deposit m the local liuilding and loan companies. '" Although thg commnnity did not ex¬ pect any noticeable progress within the first week, we are pleasantly surprised to learn that the two local institutions are well on the way toward their goal. In intiuiring of Morris Lopper, at¬ torney for the Hilltop Building & Loan Association, regarding this prog¬ ress, Mr. Lopper stated: "The effect of our announcement made February 28 was more satisfactory than we dared hope for, taking into consideration this is a new program, suggested at a time when there is a noticeable lack of confidence. Those depositors, whom we have con¬ tacted during the past week, are liappy. The result, is improved morale and in¬ creased confidence. We are happy to state that during the first six days fol¬ lowing our announcement 54% of our depositors mailed their consents and agreements to exchange the present cer¬ tificates of deposit for new accounts in the new proposed associations." "I repeat what I stated to you last week,—that we expect to be open for normal building and loan activities im¬ mediately upon the receipt of our charter from Washington. When we announced that the conversion should be completed within 130 days, many persons expressed the thought that we had overestimated our proposal. However, we are pleased to announce that in our opinion, our con¬ version into Federal Saving and Loan Associations should be completed before the 60 days have expired." To resist that was not only the right but thc duty of thc leadership of the German IHiople, but this need not afTect, the eco¬ nomic interests of the Jewish minority In Gerniany, insofar as those composing that minority show a willingness to rec¬ ogni/e certain cultural necessities and to manifest a corresponding sense of re¬ sponsibility." He then went on to say that Germany "would gladly btiy American products now to fhe same amount as previously, if only we were given chance to pay for them in German merchandise. But this, unfortunately, is not possible in the de¬ gree that could be desired, because o'f consecjuences arising from a boycott movement, which is based upon complete¬ ly false assumptions an<l which arises from a whipping-up of untruths by a small American minority that has made its influence felt. Lippert added that the boycott had caused Germany to drop out as the Oest customer for American cotton ahd hinted that Americanf agriculture and industry would be further affected by a continuance of the boycott New York (WNS)—Cables exposing thc falsity of the statements made by Dr. Julius Lippert, Nazi commissioner of IBerlin, who told the American Chamber of Commerce in Berlin that the boycott should be called off because it was hurt¬ ing American interests were sent to the Chamber of Commerce by the Non-Sec¬ tarian Anti-Nazi League and the Ameri¬ can Jewish Congress. The cable from thc Congress, denouncing Lippert's state¬ ments as mendacious and untrue, was read by Dr. Stephen S. Wise to an audi¬ ence of 2,000 women attending a recep¬ tion given by the Congress women's division to Dr. Albert Einstein. Mayor Fiorcllo H. LaGuafdia, who spoke at the reception, also referred to Lippert's speech which he said clearly discloses "thc type of mind now in control of the unhappy German ¦ people." The cable from the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League declared that the real reason that Ger¬ many is buying less from America is that Germany lacks the cash to buy. The cable also cited the warning to all Jew¬ ibh publishers to sell their businesses as refuting Lippert's assertion that nothing had happened to the German Jews eco¬ nomically.
