The principles set forth in the Zionist platform appeal to all who believe in a Palestine above party and class—who see iu a rebuilt Zion the possibility for recon¬ ciliation of all elements within Jewry and xvlio look forward to the develop¬ ment of a National Home that shall be thc fullest expression of the aspirations of the entire world Jewry.
NEW YORK (WNS)-'The Jews are not a race but a religious community and to tonfend that they are anything else is to give "a weapon into the hands of our enemies," Dr, Cyrus Adler, president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, warned in an address at the Seminary's coinmenceiiient exercises. Call¬ ing on tlie ten newly ordained rabbis to help dispel the theory of a Jewish race, Dr. Adler declared "let us get it in our minds, definitely once and for all, that even before the destruction of the Temple, even before the destruction of our nation in Palestine, we became a religious com¬ munity; and that we are, that we shall remain or we shall be nothing." Pointing out that even Nazi Ge,rmany docs not openly attack the Jewish religion, at least any more than it attacks any form of Christianity, Dr. Adler said that "Ger¬ many has invented a perfectly false race theory which has not the slightest founda¬ tion in fact," but which is being utilized to rationalize Nazi hatred of the Jews "in order to save their faces." "Why,'' he asked, "should we fall into this tfap? Why should we declare ourselves a race or Kultur?" The ten newly-ordained rab¬ bis were Morris Adler, St. Joseph, Mis¬ souri, Eli A. Bohnon, Toronto; Morris A. Frank, Chattanooga, Tenn.; Irwin L Hyman, Atlantic City ;y^ Mordecai H. Lewittcs, New York Citw; Philip Listo- kin, New York City; AS^. F tho Chronicle were to print all the news depicting the plight of refugees from Germany, the extraordinary suf¬ fering and deep humiliation of the hun¬ dreds of bur fellow Jews are undergoing daily |n t|iat country and other sections of Europe, it could fill the column^ not only oi)ce a week, but almost daily. The pictures that are painted for us are real tragedies, such as have never, ih the his¬ tory of the Jewish people, been inflicted upon any race or group.
"The roots of tlie Naiii way of life go down deeper than we realize/' declared E. J, Schanfarber, in asking for support of the. United Jewish Fund of Columbus which seeks to solve many of the tragic problems created by the persecution of Jews and pther minorities in Germany. "This way of life makes for war and intolerance and an unwillingness to let
people live their oWn lives and follow their, own genius and instincts," he said.
"When the men and women qf Colum¬ bus support the local United Jewish Fund appeal, as I hope they will do in generoup measure, it should also be remembered that there jis one iniportant aspect to tol¬ erance; the Jews can only bt; safe in a world in which everyone is safe, a world in which no person will be denied rights because of race or creed," Schanfarber added. ' * ¦ • ' ,
The brutal intolerance which is rampant in Germany today is not primarily a Jew¬ ish question. Undoubtedly individuals and groups of Jews have suffered greatly and are continuing to bear, the burden of a fanatical racial creed, These are entitled to all the help that we in,America can give them, but the persecution from which they suffer has a deeper source than we
realuc. It ib traceable to a resurgence iii cruelty wbich throws the world back to a primitiveness which we have not. known for centuries.
Up to date, Columbus Jews have raised about $22,000 of the i|!:>5,000 goal. There is yet $;i,000 to he' subscribed by smaller gifts. Every, self-respecting Jew should consider it a privilege to help in his or her small way our unfortunate brethren over seas. When you contribute to the United Jewish Fund of Columbus, you are also helping to defend the fair name of Judaism in this country through the Anti:Defamotion League of .the B'nai B'rith, The Jewish Orphan Home, Jewish hospitals and many other worthy causes too numerous to mention. Let "One For All and Alt For One," be our slogan in meeting our just obligations as Jews and,
