Rabbi Mayerberg Honored
At the annual meeting of the Congrega¬ tion B'nai Jchudah of Kansas City, Mo., held< Wednesday, June 12,' .a farewell dinner .was tendered Rabbi and Mrs. Samuel S. Mayerberg who are sailing June 25 for Palestine and Europe. Thc Rabbi and his wife .were presented with a generous clicck by members of thc Congregation as an expression of .regard and esteem. Much praise was given to Rabbi. Mayerberg in an address of the. retirfng president, Mr. l^atkin, who paid a high tribute to the Riibbi for his spiritual leadership as well as for his personal, friendship and affection.
Rabbi Samuel Mayerberg was for¬ merly the spiritual leader of the Dayton, Ohio, Temple, and was editorial contribu¬ tor to ihc Ohio Jewish Chronicle when it Was first established in 1922.

Nazis Fire Strauss Because He Used Jewish Librettist
BERLIN (WNS)—Because Stefan Zweig, world-famous Jewish author, wrote the libretto to "The Silent Woman", the new opera of Richard Strauss, Germany's best known operatic coinposer, Strauss is to bie removed from his post as president of the Reich Musi¬ cal chamber after the premiere of the opera. The late Hugo von Hofmann- sthal, also a Jew, write all the librettos for Strauss' earlier operas but the Nazis had expected him to turn to Aryan librettists after von HofmannsthaVs death. Strauss earned the further enmi^ of the Nazis when his son married a wealthy Jewish ^irl.

TRENTON, N. J. (WNS)—Samuel Untermyer's request for a legislative in¬ vestigation into the Nazi propaganda at (he New Jersey College for Wonien .was refused by Governor Harold G. Hoffman shortly before the' legislature adjourned for a two weeks recess. Governor Hoff-^ man declared that the investigation by the tlrustees of Rutgers University should be permitted to go on, without, inter¬ ference by the state. Since Mr. Unter-. myer had told: the governor he had in¬ formation about the situation at the New Jersey College for Women which would create a sensation, the governor asked Mr, Untermyer to turn this-information oyer to J. Edward Ashraead, chairman oif the trustees' committee, and invited him to testify . before the committee.. The committee's investigation grows out of charges that Dr. Lienhard Bergel was dismissed from the German department of the New Jersey College for Women, an affiliate of Rutgers University, be¬ cause he opposed the pro-Nazi views of Dr. F. J. Plauptmann, head of the Ger¬ man department. Governor Hoffman predicted that the trustee's report would be "searching, impartial and fearless."

NEW BRUNSWICK, N, J, (WNS) —Nazi propaganda disseminated In this , country is for the enrichment of Amer¬ ican culture, Dr. Friederich J. Haupt¬ mann, head of the .German department of the New Jersey College for Women, declared in, a statement read to the trus¬ tees' committee of Rutgers University which is investigating charges that Dr. Hauptmann-engaged in spreading Nazi propaganda at the college and that he dismissed Dr. Lcinhard Bergel from, the German department because the latter opposed Hauptmanri's pro-Nazi seritt- mcnts. Drawing a distinction between thc word; propaganda in the American and European sense, Dr. Hauptmann said that in Europe to spread propaganda nicans to ' disseminate "uncolored and unvarnislied facts" while prol>aganda in this country mearis "the presentation of a one-sided and distorted point of view." In the lat¬ ter , sense Germany is not spreading propaganda in this country, lie,asserted,;, adding that he knew'of no official action by the German Government and that he had seen no official documents which strive to disseminate s such propaganda. .Although'he denied that he .was a Nazi or a member of the Friends of the New Germany,. Dr. Hauptriiann admitted, de- . fending in a number of public speeches Germany's persecution of Eastern' Jews. Father of University Hospital Physician Dies from Injuries
Julius Lowenstein, age 58, Nashville„ Tenn,, father of Dr. Louis Lowenstein, resident physician. at University Hos¬ pital, passed away Sunday at the Hospital of a skull fracture.
The injury was suffered when his autO imd the car of Mr, and Mrs. Walter W. Weish, 310 Buttles Ave., collided at the intersection^of state routes 29 and 42. Mr. and Mrs.' Welsh were fatally injured in the collision.
Surviving Mr, Lowenstein is his wife, Mrs, Berdie Lowenstein, and two sons. The body was sent to Nashville by Schoedinger & Co, RALPH LAZARUS AWARDED
DEGREE BY DARTMOUTH
Ralph Lazarns, son .of Fred Lazarus, Jr. of 110 Park Drive, Columbus, O., was among the 475 seniors who received the Bachelor of Arts degree last Mon¬ day at the 166th commencement exercises of Dartmouth College, Hanover, N. H. It was the largest graduating class in history.
