And now we give thc floor tu David Schwartz . . , His Economics Is Good Fiction Also For a classic example of the houbC dividul against ifielf in Palestine, there IS no better illubtration than that of Moslic, Smilansky, scholat-, literateur, gentleman farmer, and hifih priest of the ccurictinic reactionaries. Sniilan.sky, reap- niR large harvests of gold from his lar^e pardess of golden frnit, is the chief melanimed in Palestine of the doctrine of Arab labor and low wages.
But his family fail to see eye to eye with him. His wife is a laborite and a son .shares what he has and ekes out a bare living in a socialist Kvutzali, In the confines of his own home, Papa Smilansky is appreciated for his good fiction, and his family includes in thc scope of fiction, his economic doctrines also.
Thc King David Hotel Some time ago, Zionist circle^ in .*\mcrica were rather bewildered at thc report whit.li came from Palestine that the management of the King David hotel in JeriLsalem had dismissed all of its Jewish employees. Tlic King David, as is generally known, is owned by a cor- .poration, thc menibers of which arc about eighty per cent Jewish—hence thc amaze¬ ment.
I have recently had a talk with a Jew who is one of the abbistant managers of thc King David, and hc dismisses thc story which reached America as an un¬ mitigated or perhaps almost unmitigated yarn.
His story is that the inc'dcnt occurred when the manager of the hotel was away from Pa^stinc on a visit to Europe. Tlie acting manager at the time dismissed one Jew and this lone Jewibh employee raised thc hullabaloo about mass Jewish dismis¬ sals.
Actually, this assistan^ananager tells me, about one third or stscty o( the em* ployees of the King David arc Jews. It is true that thc management looks askance on Jews as waiters in thc hotel, he says. \nrl hc justifies this attitude on the al¬ leged ground that Jews are not good as waiters, A large percentage oi thc waiters at the King David, incidentally, arc negroes from the Sudan—and it ts possible that their obseqiitonsnesii may lend itself more favorably to the art of waiting than the independence of the Jew. Nevertheless, thc assistant manager tells mc, there are four German Jewish lawyers who arc now in training for jobs as waiter*:. This seems tpnte a come¬ down, but from thc monetary standpoint, waiting -at the King David is quite as lucrative an employment as the white collar professions elsewhere.
I am giving the story as hc tells it to me. There may bc another side. How- over, the allegation that there are no Jews in the emidoy of thc King David is tpiilt obviously negated by the instances of the ass'stant manager himself who is vcr>' perceptibly a J^jw.

If one ignores evidences of an increase of anti-Semitic feeling in America one IS charged with repeating the cowardice which charactcriyed the Jews of Germany in thc years prior to the ascension df Adolf Hitler. H' one recognises and insists upon an awareness of the activities of anti-Semites one is likely to be charged with hypersensitivity and neuroses.
It is not strange, therefore, that there is not in this country a' unified program for meeting a .situation whose disturbing symbols confront thc Jew at the most unexpected times and places. Whether or not a unified program is desirable, it is clear that under no circumstances is it possible. For the Jews of America, as the axiomatic phrase has it, arc as diversified in their background, motives | and aspirations as any other single group ' in the United States. Jews would do well to take into consideration the impli- cat oils of that fact.
What should be the Jewish attitude toward Father Coughlin, for example? The hysterical reaetion that followed his

for tl^e Jews in his breast? Have Jews ^^''^'^^ P^"*^^ 1" ^'^^^- Sulzberger and then no part whatsoever in the general politi¬ cal future and destiny of America? If Father CouKhlin is a menace, it is because hc is combining in beguihng measure a. chaotic program of social justice with a medieval conception of the function of 1 thc State and the rights of democracy. | It i-j Father Coughlin's onward march I toward Fascism wh cli shoukl'bc thc con¬ cern of all Americana. Why, then, con¬ centrate on an issue that is completely negligible as far as his ultimate goal i.s concerned? Is that policy of indifference, except on the selfish, personal plane, the only approacli which Jewish leadership can understand?

Jcv\ish papers, organizations and leaders united in one pained expression to voice their horror and their humiliation that Father Coughlin should have dared to invoke the names, of a number of inter-^ national bankers of Jewish origin. Ema¬ nating from a central fact-finding organi¬ zation, a report was published and blazoned forth showing that the Jewish bankers floatc<l only a tiny fraction of the international loans of thc past two decades. So what?
Why was it incumbent upon Jewish leaders to rise to the defense of these Jewish bankers, all of whom, with but one honorable exception, represent forces entirely unallied with Jewish life? In the first place it is extremely doubtful whether the millions of radio listeners of Father Coughlin untjcrstood thc "pil- If ticket sale? for the Fourth Annual pulistic" anti-Semitism of his remarks A. herent powers, ,the Jews are the most inevitable victims, regardless of whether those who bring on Fascism make anti- Semitism a specific plank in their pro¬ gram.
There is a grave issue which should enlist the utinost energies of Jews every¬ where; the necessity to preserve the fundamental liberties guaranteed in thc \ meri can
that they need not be concerned about those geneial liberties, as long as they arc given a pledge that they will not bc annoyed, they are merely repeating in this country the terrible mistake which was made by the Jews in Germany.
Recently Strachey was arrested in the forurn of a synagogue in connection with the deportation proceed.ngs against him.
iiig's paiifrs that Mr, and Mrs. James ^ P. Warburg were sailing lada> ou the Bremen, his only comment was "Mr. Warburg has the 'distinction' of being the only prominent Jew who has trav¬ eled on a German boat flying thc-Swas¬ tika flag since thc beginning of the cruci- fiction and disfraiiLhiseincnt nf the Ger¬ man Jews by the Hitler regime,
"In iiew, however, of the past per- formance«i of that gentleman in his re¬ lations with Gerinany, neither his fellow Jews nor his non-Jewish fellow Ameri- cans should he surprised at anything he docs to ernphasi/.e and natint before them his s>m[)atliy with the Hitler regime atid his want tif sympathy with thc perse¬ cuted German Jews. It ran he accounted for, if at all, but not excused, only on the theory that his banker relatives and associates in Germany arc in a difiicult position with that government and that he therefore finds himself impelled to do everything possible to help them. Re¬ gardless of the effect upon his own peo¬ ple—that is what he has been ^oing.
"1 am sure that no self respecting American Jew will follow his example of traveling upon the Gennan ship, where his fellow Jews are not regarded, socially or otherwise, as the cnuals of the servants who wait upon them."
Cantor P. Pinchik
Colunilius Jewry, no doubt, will he thrilled to hear that the world famous Cantor P. Pinchik has again been booked to sing in this city <luring the "Sefira periofi" This time he is to conduct ConstituVion" If Jews think, Sabbath services at the Broad Street Temple on iFriday evening and Satur¬ day morning, May 17th and 18th, He will also render a special Mariv and .Sefira Service Monday' evening. May •20th, to be followed by a grand rcmcert.
Those who have heard Cantor Pinchik befure, know that a real treat is in store for hundreds in this community who ap¬ preciate the unique art of this outstand- Immediatcly, a 'frightened bleating was ">S cantor of the synagogue. There is
parently, thc people which has lived longest with history has learned least from history. What it should have learned is that anti-Semitism is not an isolated phenomenon, which wreaks havoc upon Jews alone. Anti-Semitism is but an offshoot of a political and economic situation which affects the entire coimtry. As long as Jews will insist upon treating anti-Semitism as their exclusive burden, so long will they fail tq enlist the endur¬ ing sympathy and understanding of thc varied liberal groups to ^vhom thc ele¬ ments of civilization are still precious.
Because Father Coughlin made un¬ pleasant references to bankers who hap¬ pen to be Jews, he is branded an anti- Semite. With truth, he can point out that he has consistently welcomed Jews, Catholics and Protestants into his Union for Social Justice. With Justice, hc can »liow that on many broadcasts he has reiterated his belief that all men, regard¬ less of creed, are affected by the political and economic conditions which he opposes. Why, then, must Jews continue to press hini, prod him, until he is forced to an
hcar<l to thc citect that Jews have no right to utilize their religious centers to listen to radical propagandists. That is the type of cringing, self-dcstroyiiig reasoning which makes some Jewish men¬ talities totally loathsome to the liberal mind.
There arc in this country many na¬ tional and local Jewish organizations en¬ gaged, as thc fund-raising pamphlets describd it, "in protecting Jewry against the rising tide of anti-Semitism." All of them would hc more constructively engaged if tlicy completely abandoned their private war in defense of thc Jews and added their strength to the general war in defense of essential and universal human rights. The Jews fighting alone against what they believe to be their only enemy are a pitiful factor in an over- whelm'ng struggle; but their strength added to the power of the many others now functioning in the front line trenches against terrifying political and economic retrogression would bc of enormous value.
The hypocritical attitude of Jews in their effhrts for self-defense is reflected in the attitude adoptctl by many toward thc boycott of Germany. They insist that this is not a "Jewish" boycott, and that they would not subscribe solely to a "Jewish** hoycott. They prate of the suffering of all liberals and all minorities (Continued on Page 2)
probably no other singer in the world today who casts such a magic spell upon bis listeners as Pinchik.
\ committee of the Broad Street Tem¬ ple, sponsoring Cantor Pinchik's return engagement here, anticipates a capacity 'turnout for this event. Further details will appear in the forthcoming issues of The Chronicle.
Mrs. Schoenberg, Executive Secy, of Council of Jew¬ ish Women, Dead
