Long before his ideas about,the Jews could possibly .have been afTccied one way or the other by the fact that his datighter, Clara Clemons, had inarricd Gssip Gabrilowitsch, the cmincnL Jewish musician who is the conductor of the Detroit Sympliony. Orchestra, Twain had shown liimself ¦¦ familiar' with many phases of the Jewish problem. No¬ where in his writings is there to be found anything that can be construed as offeii- sive to Jews. On "the contrary, all his refcrcnceb to the Jewibh people are sym¬ pathetic and friendly; Twain admired the Jews as a race and, as one of hi*; biographers ,i>oiiits oiit, considered them "the nioat gifted race in the world." He know many of the leading Jews of his day intimately. At one time he was ac- tuallj' in love with Adah Isaacs Menken, thc exotic Jewess who was the darling of the theatre in the 1860's. There is also a record of his-<'CnthUsiastic interest in a project for a Jewish children's thea¬ tre on New York's East Side.
Anyone familiar with Twain's, work also knows how deeiily he was inspired by the Bible. There are Well over a hundred Biblical allusions in Twain's writings. He also . syriipathized with Ilerzl in his organization of the. Zionist movement and was. one- of the first American writers to comment on Zion¬ ism. His interest in Zionism, was .par¬ ticularly striking since he made many uncomplimentary references to Palestine after visiting . that country in 1867. Twain's trip to Palestine also took hiim to, Gibraltar, Tangicrs and Morocco, where he found much in the life of the Jews to distress him.

"All things are mortal but the Jew; I'all other forces',piss, but he remains?' From these statements, it is clear that Twain had given considerable thought to the Jewish problem. He had no use for: cringing and.cowardly Jews. It was his idea that Jews ought to organize politi¬ cally as Jews in order to obtain their rights. He was sincerely, hut mistakenly, convinced that the Crucifixion had noth¬ ing to, do with the origin of anti- Semitism. Twain believed hatred of the Jew had its roots only in economic rival-, ries and Christian jealousy, of Jewish in¬ tellectual attainments. With that un¬ canny ability to.make shrewd predictions that so often characterized the humorist. Twain knew two generations ago that on this score anti-Semitism would never be eradicated. He himself offered no solution for the Jewish problem, but he recognized its existence and attempted to explain it in his own way.—(Copy¬ right, 1935).

Hillel Players who have been present¬ ing the Ohio State campus and Columbus wftli tlic highest type of drama for the last ten years, rose to new heights last Thursday and Saturday niglits in the production of Eugene O'Neill'i. comedy, "Ah Wilderness". The performances set a new high for Hillel in perfection of interpretation, smoothness of presenta¬ tion, and efficiency of technical \vork.
Martui H. Rubin, a former Hillel star, look over thc coaching reins two weeks ago. and, the finished production which was prcbentcd, received tht: highest com¬ mendation from the UOO «r riiore persons who attended the two {lerformanccs.
Jerome Schwartz who portrays Rich¬ ard, a youth experiencing the difficulties of adolescence, and Willie Gomberg, the star of "Liliom'', who was cast as thc oft-incbriated< uncle, should get the dis¬ tinction for their interpretations. The humor, the antics of thc intoxicant Gara- berg provided the play with its mtist humorous scenes. Belle Mvas played adeptly by Ruth Salcr, and.thc moonlight part with Muriel, Evelyn B. Levy, ex¬ hibited a. high degree of perfection.
Equally as effective in their roles were Robert Jaffc, a new I-ljllel .find, who took the part of the father. His scene with Richard deserves special mention, while Clara Rosenticrg as the worried mother also did well.
In the secondary roles were:-Bess Marks, Ruth Rosenbluth, Isadorc Grccn- blatt, Maurice Portman, Nathan Zahm, Nat Nast, Leona Atlas, Robert Coplan, and Joseph .Levinger.
The work' of Eduard Goodman and Robert Leavitt should be commended. These men, as business tnanager and ticket chairmen did a fine job. Over flOO persons attended the two i>erfbrmanccs.
Ester Levinson assisted Rubin in the coaching while Stuart Allen of Strollers aided in the technical capacity.

"In a recent protest against the pres¬ ent treatment of tlie Jews in Germany the Assembly of tlie Church of England has expressed tlie Jiope that other Chris¬ tian bodies would join tliein iii this pro¬ test. This we feci constrained to do, We are members of churches which are liound to the church in Germany by man> and intimate tics. We acknowl¬ edge our indebtedness to the great Ger¬ man teachers and intcrprcicrs of the Christian religion from Luther's day to the present who „haye enrictied our com¬ mon Christian heritage. Since the war we have protested against the disabili¬ ties to which Germany was subjected by the Versailles treaty and have worked for their removal, l-'or Jus reason we feel it our duty to speak' with equal frankness when Germany adopts a policy which threatens her moral isolation.
"We. protest against this policy, be¬ cause the treatment accorded to the Jews is unworthy of a great nation. Since it is based on a reli¬ gious interpretation of race, thc present treatment of the Jews raises far deeper issues than former persecutions of Jews and other minorities based merely upon political and. aceidcntal considerations. It is the attempt of a pagan tribalistic moveriient based on race, blood and soil to cut off Christianity from its historical, rootfi and a Christian. nation from its religious past.
"Therefore, . all branches of the Christian church niusri make their pro¬ test not only iii^the name of; human brotherhood but of Christian faith. The IMjlicy now lieing pursued in Germany threatens the liberty of all persons, Cath¬ olic and Protestant alike, ,whD believe that their supreme duty is to Almighty God. The claim of the State to control every aspect of life limits the freedom of the scholar in his search for truth; of the artist in his pursuit of beauty; of the Christian in the practice of hrs religion. It puts almost insuperable bar¬ riers in the way of normal intercourse between Germany and other peoples. Its continuance is bound in the end to result in the deterioration of the inteVcctital and moral fiber of those who sul>mit to it. In the t>ast, Germany hqs renderel iij^rjil service to mankind aiid to the Christian faith. We are loath to believe tliat she will permanently disavow the moral ideals of Christianity."
