Bishop McConnell to Speak
At Bryden Road Temple
Friday, May 8
On Friday evening, May 8, Bishop McConnell, the most prominent Meth¬ odist clergyman in America, will speak at the Bryden Road Temple. He will be present in our city during thc month of May as one of the lead¬ ers of, and participants in, the quad¬ rennial Conventioii of his church, to whicll upwards of 600 delegates and 2,000 visitors from all parts of the nation will come. The Bishop is gen¬ erally regarded asl the ablest and most out'Standing minister of his faith. He is progressive in outlook, a liberal and an eloquent, aggressive speaker.
Bishop McConnell entered the min¬ istry in ISO'l and was elected Bishop of thc New York Diocese in 1912. In 19Ifi he was elected President of thc Religious Education Association and in 1029 hc was made the head of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America. To this latter organization belong the Central Con¬ ference of American Habbis, the Cath¬ olics of America, and all the Protes¬ tant denominational groups. The rec¬ ognition of his scholarship in non- church circles came to him in 1930 when Yale University extended to him an invitation to be thc Lyman Beecher Lecturer. In addition to be¬ ing an eloquent speaker, B'ishop Mc¬ Connell is an author of note. Among his most famous books are: "The In¬ crease of Faith", "The Prophetic Ministry", "The Christian Ideal and Social Control."
In extending to him the invitation to occupy the pulpit of Temple Israel, Rabbi Samuel M. Gup felt that a tie of fellowship should be established between the large denomination of Methodist Episcopalians in our coun¬ try and our Jewish community. The Rabbi feels highly honored in know¬ ing that the Bishop has accepted the invitation. It has always been his policy to foster a feeling of friend¬ ship among the non-Jewish denomi¬ nations and his own. The knowledge that thc eminent Bishop will sp^ak to our-community on Friday, May 8, should assure the presence of a very substantial congregation at the serv¬ ices.

On Boycotts
"For myself, Ihave lung since adopted the boycott as one uf man's most effective and right¬ eous weapons against cvili All my life I have practiced it— boycotted vile newspapers, by refusing to buy and read them; btfycotted dishonest manufac¬ turers, by refusing to purchase thcir goods; boycotted cruel sweaters of labor, by refusing to enter their shops; boycotted indecent plays, by refusing to 'see the show'! It is in this spirit that I have supported Gandhi in his boycott of the English cotton trade, and the Legion of Decency in its boy¬ cott of the movie producers. It is in this same spirit "that X have boycott<kl Adolf Hitler and all bis work.
"I could wish that all fighting in this world were unnecessary and that everywhere men could live at peace. Bnt as long as evil in any form is with us, we must 'abhor' it. ' And a good way to *abhor' and destroy, is to boycott!"—John Haynes Holmes in "Through Gcni|.lle Eyes" on Boycotts. *^ '

Justin ll. Sillman
That the many years of devoted service given to the Columbus com¬ munitj by Justin L. Sillman have not been unappreciated, is evidenced by the enthusiasm of hundreds of- his friends and admirers who arc dedi¬ cating the April meeting of Zion Lodge, next Monday evening at the Broad St. Temple in his honor. From all indications a large section of the community and surrounding towns, including the many past presidents of Zion Lodge, will be present to hear his message on the achievements of the B'nai B'rith in District No. 2, of which hc is president.
Calm, methodical, and exacting in manner, Sillman has ever been one to inspire confidence, and to give the rightful impression that here is not a man to be easily swayed, or ito suc¬ cumb readily to anger or rashness. In spite of his youths he pos ^sses tho distinction of being one of the young¬ est presidents of the district; his friendliness and cordiality, untouched by chill, have been the outstanding qualities of this young leader of the Order. It is due to such men as Justin Sillman and E. J. Schanfarber that B'nai B'rith in Columhus. in a large measure, holds its standing and reputa tion—leaders who have consciously or unconsciously had a benign influence on all who had worked with them. Next Monday evening's meeting, therefore, will be a gathering of men and women in the ETnai B'rith ranks, who, by their presence, will be pay¬ ing tribute to a man whose influence has played a prominent part in mak¬ ing Columbus one of the leading B'nai B'rith communities in the coun¬ try.
A musical program hag also heen arranged for this occasion ac¬ cording to the committee in charge. Those in attendance will have the pleasure of hearing two of Columbus' sweetest singers, Helen Horvath and Louise Dilda, who will be accom paiiicd on the piano by Mrs. H. E. Shoemaker. At the conclusion of the evening's program refreshments will be served,
Don't forget that Monday eve¬ ning's meeting is open to all—the tiuie, eight o'clock—tlie place, audi¬ torium of the East Broad St. Temple.
Extends Appreciation for Success of Jubilee Event
As general chairman of the Secogd Annual Jubilee held at Memorial Hall last Tuesday evening, Harry Maybruck desires to thank his co¬ workers, entertainers, donors, con¬ tributors, friends, organizations, and every individual who directly or u»- directly helped in. tiie success of this g'reat undertaking. "To my co-work¬ ers, the committees, and organizations whose work started weeks before the night of April 21st. and whose labors do not end for another week or two, they well know my appreciation," he stated.
The donors and entertainers. who unselfishly contributed their time. talent, and funds, Mr. Maybnick has tried to personally see and individ-' ually thank. "If I haye overlooked any one of yon, please he assured it was not intentional, and I am using this means to convey to you my ap¬ preciation," he concluded.
Watch the Ohio Jewish Chronicle for the financial statement of the Sec¬ ond United Jubilee. It will appear in a forthcoming issue.
Seven Arts Editor Calls on Former Judge Proskauer to Withdraw frpm Body Implicated in Anti-Semitic Disclosures, or ta Read Himself Out of Jewish Communal Life ... American Jewish Com¬ mittee Requested to Take Public Stand on Anti-Jewish Policy of Sentinels of Republic and on PToskauer's Affiliation With Liberty League
NEW YORK (WNS)—In an open letter addressed to former Jutlge Joseph M. Proskauer, prominent member of thc American Jewish Com¬ mittee, Joseph Brainin, editor of the Seven Arts Feature Syndicate, has tailed upon l^Ir. Proskauer to resign forthwith from the Anjcrican Liberty League, whose allied organization, the Sentinels of the Republic, sponsors ;an anti-Semitic political policy. In this letter Mr. Brainin ^scores Mr, Proskauer for his affiliation with an organization which Mr. Brainin terms "an exact replica of the Nazi anti- Semitic organizations in Germany in the years preceding Hitler's ascension to power," and requests that Mr. Proskauer either read himself out of organized Jewish life or publicly withdraw from the Liberty League. The Seven Arts editor also addressed a letter to Dr. Cyrus Adler, President of the American Jewish Committee, pleading with him to disown publicly Mr. Proskauer's action and asking him to speak out, in the name of the American Jewish Committee, against the Liberty League.
The text of Mr. Hrainin's letter to Mr. Proskauer is as follows:
"For some time now your name has heen associated with .the Ameri¬ can Liberty League, as a member of this organization and as a leading force in the direction of its policies.
"In the past fortnight it has de¬ veloped that the leaders of the Amer¬ ican Liberty League have simultane¬ ously endorsed an organization known as The Sentinels of the Republic and have expressed their endorsement through funds subscribed to maintain this organization.
"The Sentinels, through their offi¬ cers, have clearly indic3,ted that their group is anti-Semitic in purpose and that it looks to a United States Hit¬ ler to solve American problems. You can verify this for yourself in thc exchange of letters, which are now public property, between Mr. Cleve¬ land Runyan and Mr. Alexander Lin¬ coln.
Rabbi Ferd M. Isserman of
St. Louis to Speak
Here Monday
Rabbi Ferdinand M. Isserman, prominent St. Louis Rabbi, will be among the three nationally known peace advocates who will speak Mon¬ day at First Congregational Church at the first meeting to be held in Co¬ lumbus in conjunction with the emer¬ gency peace canipaign, a new nation¬ wide movement to keep the United States from going to war.
The meeting—which will be in thr(;e sessions, beginning at 9:110 a. m., 1:^0 p, in. and 7:30 p- m.—is one of a series of educational conferences and meetings to be hekl during the iie.xt two weeks in targe cjties throughout the country. The campaign will be opened Sunday night by a coast-to- coast broadcast.
In Columbus, Rev. R. A. Biirkhart, pastor of First Community Church, is general chairman. Among other speakers here will he included Miss Dorothy Detzer, executive secretary of the Women's International League for Peace, and Professor Paul H. Douglas, University of Chicago econ¬ omist.
Dr. J. Harry Cotton, pastor of Broad St. Presbyterian Church, will be chairman at the meetings, which are open to the public. '. The Farm Bureau, Parent-Teachers' Association and League of Women Voters are among ofher groups heaides church and peace organizations, which are co-operating,
Foidick Plans Move
According to the national sponsor¬ ing conimittee, of which the Rev. Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick, noted New York pastor, is chairman, the campaign is designed to unite pub¬ lic opinion against American par¬ ticipation in another war, the threat of which, tliey feel, is very great at present.
"We should like to kriow how you, as a Jew and one who has laid claim to Jewish leadership as a member of the American Jewish Committee and ' of other organizations, reconcile your¬ self to membership in tlie American Liberty League. From the outset it has been obvious that the Liberty League is Fascist in purpose. The Fascist character of the organization is proved beyond all doubt through thc espousal of the anti-Semitic Sen¬ tinels organization.
"The Seven Arts Feature Syndicate represents Dfi Anglo-Jewish publica¬ tions in this country with an aggre¬ gate circulation of over half a mil¬ lion readers. Speaking in behalf of that large body of public opinion, we demand your immediate resignation from the Liberty League, and your public condemnation of its politiies.
"There can be no question that your continuance as a leader of both the American Liberty League and Jewish organizations in this country is dis¬ tasteful to every self-respecting Jew who feels that the recent revelations of the activities of the Sentinels are an exact replica of the development of the Nazi movement before Hitler's ascension to power, and consequently a direct threat to Jewish security in this country.
"You are in exactly the same posi¬ tion as that handful of rich Jews in Germany who, under the delusion that they were safeguarding their own wealth and security, gave financial and moral support to the Nazi move¬ ment, and have a share in the respon¬ sibility for the terror which Hitlerism has visited upon the German nation.
"You must therefore decide whether you wish to withdraw from the Amer¬ ican Liberty League or from organ¬ ized Jewish life.
"Because the subject of this com¬ munication is of such vital interest to so large a body of Jewish public opinion, we are addressing you in an open letter, to which we are giving simultaneous publication in all of our affiliated magazines and newspapers.
"We look to you for an immediate reply, which we ^yill release to the same publications upon receipt."
To Dr. Cyrus Adler Mr. Brainin wrote the following:
"We address ourselves to you in behalf of that large body of Jewish public opinion which we serv^ through " fifty-6ve newspapers in the United States, on a matter which vitally con¬ cerns thc welfare of the Jewish people.
"Wc refer to the recent disclosures (Continued on page 2)
A HEART TO HEART TALK
'*A Jewish joilrnal/' states the editor, "is inaintained by advertisements and subscrip¬ tions. An organization which is liencflted through a Jewish publication and receives from it continued publicity week in and week out throughout the year, should feel that something nwre is due than merely 'thank yon.' ... A substantial way in which to show your appreciation is to see that those members of an organization who Ure not sub- scribetB of the paper, lend their moral and substantial support by having them Iiecome regular subscribers,"
Our contention is that mem¬ bers of Jewish organizations whose notices appear -regularly in The Jewish Chronicle could make the paper better able to serve them by patronizing its adverUsers, thereby cooperating with both the advertiser and the newspaper. We believe tho Jew¬ ish community ia sufficiently in¬ terested in its only Jewish newspaper to give it whatever assistance it can so that it may continue its labors on behalf of Columbus Jewry.
