Anti-Defamation League Issues Statement
In the pending poHticar campaign, a wholly false issue has been injected; one which would imply a special in¬ terest on the part of. Jewish citizens. This makes imperative the rcasscrtion of the principle that Jews are not and never have been an organized political group in America. They afliliate ac¬ cording tQ their individual convictions with the various political ])arties, aiid the right of franchise is exercised by Ihein free from any considerations of class or group distinction. This is true notwithstanding representations of zealous political advocates to the contrary.
The raising ot such issue is partic¬ ularly unjustified in the pending cam- p.-iign, because of the unquestioned rec¬ ord of tolerance, in accord with the finest traditions of our nation, of the Presidential canditkitcs of the recog¬ nized political parties and their com¬ plete freedom from any religious or racial prejudice.
(Signed) Sigmund Livingston, Chairman, Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith.

Brundage Says U. S. Olym¬ pic Team Financed by German-Americans
NEW YPRK (WNS)—What was tantamount to an admission that the American ,team that went to the Ber¬ lin Olympic Games, over the t>rotcst ^ of large scctioiLs of American public' ! opinion was financed in considerable [nieastire hy funds obtained from pro- Nazi and Gernian-Amcrican sources was made by Avery Brundage, chair¬ man of the AUierican Olympic Com¬ mittee and leader of, the fight for American- participation in the B'erlin games, in a prp-Nazi'speech at the German Day. celebration in Madison Square Garden here. Cheered, by, 20,000 gathered under the auspices of the German-American Bund, successor of the Friends of the New Germany, Mr. Brundage said that "thanks to the support of yoii people oi German de- 'scent in America we were able to get oiir Olympic team abroad^ The ques¬ tion, then was whether a yociferoxis ; ihinprity,, highly prgaliiztd and highly financed, could impose its will on 120,- 000 people.*'
In an atmosphere heavily larded with Nazism, and with "Heil Hitlers" and swastikas dominating the scene, Brundage received an ovation whfen he lauded the Nazi regime and urged the United States to' take a lesson from it, "We, too,- if we wish to preserve our institutions, must stamp out Comr munism," he said. "We, too, must take steps to arrest the decline of patriotism.! -If we are-to preserve the America we all love so well we must stanip out these false theories.'' ,
Brundage also, praised Germany's handling of the Olympic Games, deny¬ ing the Nazis, had.used them,fpc.prppi aganda purposes, and asserted that "Germany has progressed as a natiofi out of her discouragement of five years ago.into, a rtcw spirit of con¬ fidence- in herself." Other speakers were Dr. Hans Luther, German am¬ bassador at Washington, and Karl Strochlin, mayor of Stuttgart, Ger¬ many, Part of the entertainment was a political tafaleaii by uniformed .Nazi storm troPpers and the. singing of the Horst Wessel song.''.' :

J !•: K U S A L E M (WNS-Palcor Agency)—The entire Jewish people is CRiIcd \i\vm to safeguard the gaiii.s in the Jewish Homeland through the pro- vtsidii nf ;i ii;l,.')fiO,000 defense and se¬ curity fiiiid in a statement issued by the Jewish Agency for Palestine on the ix-.casion of the close of the sixth iiioiith of. violence which marks, the Ar.ih revolt against the Jewish Na¬ tional Home policy of the British gov¬ ernment. The. problem is one that cannot be borne by tlic Jews of Pal¬ estine; alpne,' hut must be shared by ic Jewish people everywhere, it i.i declared in the statement, which reads as follows;
"For six months the Yishub has been faced with aii economic onslaught and incessant murderous attacks. The Arab .strike committees aiid the ter¬ rorist bands have been attempting to 1 check the peaceful and redemptive Jewish endeavors in a , renascent Homeland^ through dastardly and cow¬ ardly outrages, the murdering of old and young front ambush, the burning of crops and the uprooting of trees. This attempted war of extermination is not solely dircctefl against the lives and toil of the Homeland's 400,000 Jews but against the hopes of the en¬ tire Jewish people and their centuries- old aspiration to return to rebuild the long-neglected Homeland and to be rebuilt therein,
"Yet the Yishub has not been dis¬ mayed by this assault. The bloodshed and destructive fury launched by the Arab brigands has recoiled and been unsuccessful against the living steel wall of the Homeland's builders. The brutal provocation implicit in tht acts of, lawlessness lias been withstbod ami civil war prevented. The Yishub re¬ mains steadfast at its post with valiance, responsibility and judgment
and with- unflinching- dctcnninnlion:
It maintains an unflagging watch as in one hand it holds its working tools ¦ and in the other the weapon of de¬ fense.
'The Arab strike, stained witli the innocent blood of Jews, Arabs and British, has not deterred the develop¬ ment of, the Jewish economy, nor has it baited the Jewish creative activity. The insecurity of the highways has not stayed Jewish transport nor sev¬ ered communications between; tovim and village,
"Our people's pioneers of the land .have not confined their efforts to the protection of existing achievements or , the continuance of previous activity. During the very height of ¦ the dis¬ turbances, when the sword of destruc¬ tion still was braiidished over their heads and the hopes of the Jewish people were threatened by the gravest danger, the Yishub won new perma.- lient footings, promising expansion, and thrust its roots more firmly into the soil. The world's first Jewish city carved a way to the sea. and a Jewish port is beginning oa the Tel Aviv shore. Jewish labor has been consolidated in the Jewish villages and thousands of new Jewish workers have been absorbed in the Jewish set¬ tlements. Jewish agriculture has won new markets and the labor settlements have adniittcd, hundreds of new pio¬ neers. Building's basic industry, ,quarrying has absorbed added Jewish labor. The Jewish defense forces have had an .uhprccc<lented increase, with the enlistment of thousands of Jewish youths iii the supernumerary police who arc now guarding Jewish life and property. Not the. letist achievement during these months of crime and unleashed passions has been the entry into Palestine of thousands of newcomers of all types and ages who, by settling on the* latid, have demonstrated the absorptive capacity of a rebuilding Homeland despite ter¬ rorism. '
"For six months the Yishub alone has borne the weight of these strug¬ gles, paying for its faith in our.re¬ demption undertaking with the fruit of its toil and capital and the lives of its sons and daughters. But the Yishub will not retreat or falter ^rom any aacrillce, remaining steadfast and prepared for the trial forced upon it by fate.. But this cannot be regarded as a battle to be fought by the Jew¬ ish cpmniuiiity in Palestine alone. It is not the lives and rights in the land of 400,000 Jews which it is guarding hut the prerogatives of the entire Jew- (ConlittUed on page 2)
