J KH U S A L li M . (WNS—Palcor Agency)—The,13th week of disorders in, Palestine opened witli nn unidcii- tificd mimber of casualties among a band of 30 Arabs who'engriged iii a severe battle with military detachments in Northern ^ Palestine. Military rein¬ forcements, froiii Nazareth and Safed kept up a steady barrage against the Arabs, who attaclicd ths^roops from amhiish. Arab terrorism rose to new tlaring when Isaac Cdhcii, Gi, one of Jerusalem's most distinguished Jews, was fired at twice'as he walked.past n store on Mamillah Road in Jerusa¬ lem, The attacker escaped,, but Cohen, whom the bullets struck jn thc thigh, gave his description to the police.
Violent death claimed its 42nd vic¬ tim among the Jews when Adam Lip- kin, a failway employe it Lydda, was killed when a rifle in the hand of a British soldier accidentally went off while' Lipkin". was accompanying, the soklier to iiivestigate a traffic mishap. Lipkin, who vvas 22, belonged to,an old Jerusalem family, the Abu Bassal quarter here having been named after his grandfather. The soldier was ar¬ rested, and an inquiry has been begun by the authorities.
An Arab woman and child were killedi^andfour others were wounded as jbri^nds in the North: of Palestiiie intensified their, attacks upon military and police patrols. The toll of:l<nown deaths, including the 42 Jewish vie-. tims, is well beyoiid the 200-mark, with, the exact number of Arab fatal¬ ities undetermined because many of the Arab dead have been buried without, notification pf the authorities. ; The new economic, situation cireated by the Arab:gaieral strike andthe re¬ placement of Arab .workers'by Jews was reflected at Zichron Jacob wheii, for the first time -since the war,' the j harvest, was brought in by Jewish labor alone.' 400 Jews were, taken oh to do work formerly, done by neigh boring Arabs.

LONDON (WNS-.Palcor Agency) —Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the Zionist Organization of America,! in an interview'with Coloiiial Secre¬ tary. Qrmsby-Gore warned that any at¬ tempt to yield to Arab violence by halting Jewish immigration into Pal¬ estine , would meet with "firm and world-wide resistance by the;Jewish people." Commenting on his interview with Mr.-Ormsby-Gore, Dr. Wise told the Palcor News Agency, that he had found the former '.'as always a sym¬ pathetic and understanding observer bf developments in Palestine, who ap¬ preciates the meaning of the Mandate and connected problems." ,
"It is inconceivable for British presr tige that there will he a, violation of the .trusteeship of the .League," said Dr. Wise. "We must, however, bear in mind the pressure upon the Colonial Secretary in favor of Arab interests. Drive Impends
. BERLIN'. ,CWNS) — With .the openiiig of the Olympic Games only a fortnight away, the movement amoiig German Jews to liquidate their businesses and flee' the country is gaining rapid momentum. There is general fear in Jewish circles that the end of the Olympic Games will -see the renewal of militant. anti-Semitic agitation. This fear is streiigthened by an orde^ banning all ;Nazi party meetings for the duration of thc Olympiad, and instructions to Nazi, leaders tp reserve their efforts for a new propaganda drive to hpgin im¬ mediately after the Olympics..
All Nazi activity ¦ against thc Jews has not been , suspended, however. Jewish homes, comparatively safe hitherto, will lose this protection as the result of a sweeping police order establishing bloc committees to make house-to-house surveys. Hamilton, cliRirnian of thc Rc- publiciiii National, Committee, in ;i press interview hcle di-scussed recent references to, his arid Governor Alfred Landon's attitudes ; toward anti-Schii- tisni. M*-. Hamilton's rijniiirks were, how¬ ever, addressed to the Democrats, who, he cliairgedt were.-responsible for the introduction of th6 Jewish issue.
Answering qufifijions on his aiid Governor Lahdon'Sj alleged anti-Semi¬ tism, Mr. Hamiltdri said:' "There is not, an iota of tnijh in such a thing and it is a deliberate attempt by those other people .to tfirow a dust- cloud when they know, tlieir ship is sinking. EXTENT OF FASCIST
PLOTTING
, NEW YORK (VVNS)—thc Sen¬ tinels of the Republic, whose alleged anti-Semitic activities were recently whitewashed following apologics'by its leaders, ard "still engaged i,ii spreading anti-Jewish propaganda; it was as¬ serted by the Rev. L, M, Birkhead of Kansas City in an interview in which he disclosed that .more than 100 anti- Semitic and Fascist organizations with a membership of 4,000,000 are at. work tile United States.' Warning that the, activity of these gi-oups is alarm¬ ingly .sirnilar to that of the Nazis be¬ fore thcy gained power. Dr. Birkhead said that only an "American Ilitler to assume control"; is necessary and, "the danger of a Fascist coup would be imminent."
Charging:" tliat these organisations are supporting the presidential candi¬ dacy of Governor Landon "because all the other-parties do not meet with their racial! and political qualifica¬ tions,", Dr. Birkhead explained that "Father" Coughlin |s not acceptable to them because he is a Catholic; and President Roosevelt, constantly . de¬ scribed by them as, Rosenfelt, is actu¬ ally anathema to thein. His adminis¬ tration is often described as the 'Amer¬ ican Jew-deal.' ¦ Thc< fact that these organizations' are. supporting Laiidon has given the responsible, Republican leaders mUch concern, but through tire West and Middle "West petty Republi can politicians are distributing their literature and propaganda."
Dr. Birldicad also asserted that all these organizations are. interrelated, that they,: use., Uteratiire eraanatitig from a cdmmoii sbiafce arid'bre direcitly or indirectly connected with Julius iStreichcr, and they all lise the same technique of blaming cverythingon the Jew^. ! The death'of the Rev. Dr. Samuel j Parkes Cadman stills, the voice' oi a! celebrated and courageous American, Christian clergyman whose entire Ufc was a symbol of the .old-fashioned American, ideals of. religious liberty. (yi all the advocates of interreligious and interracial. good will Dr. Cadrnari was, the most consistent and. cflEcctive. Nbt given to serisationalisrii or hys¬ teria; he was rightly , regarded as. the father of, thb organized movement to bring about closer relations and deeper Understanding between Christian and JeVv. An uncoiriprbmisirig foe of preiv udice and persecution in every .form, he was in the vanguard of those who felt that religious bigotry was a nega¬ tion of Christianity. - As a sincere Christian he strove to educate his cp- religioiiists to an appreciation of .Jew¬ ish problems^
Born in England, where religious liberty is the keystone of the arch of British freedom, Dr. Gadman came to the United States in the 1890's as a young man in,his twenties^ lie com¬ pleted his education, in this country, receiving his Doctor of Divinity de¬ gree from Wesleyan College in Con¬ necticut. His first pulpit was the Met¬ ropolitan Temple in New York, oyer which he presided from 1895 to 1901. In the latter year he. was" called to the pastorate of, the Central Congre¬ gational Church in Brooklyn, a pulpit he.retain.ed.for the rest of his Hfe.
No ordinary cler^man content merely to shepherd his flock, Dr. Cad¬ man was destined to. become one of the great American churchriien of hig time..Among, Christians he was knowii as a minister who combined the spirit¬ ual ideals of the church with the prac¬ tical, sense of a leader". He was always alive to the problems of the day and

had the organized Christian churches of this, or any other country under¬ taken a'_ systematic effort tb uproot anti-rSfcmitism,, to combat racial prej- , udices and tp war ori bigotry in every.- fprm. This. Commission, of which Dr. Cadman was chairman, did a mag¬ nificent' job in laying the groundwork for- more extensive .activities' in the field of interr^eligious and interracial cooperation.
From the Commission on Religious Relations between Jews arid Christiatis, there developed the more '§jiiblliorir"'r" Nationar Conference of Jews and /; Christians.' The trail of uriderstariding hewn out.by the Commission ¦was ' broadened arid expanded into a great highway of. education in. the field .of intergroup relations by the Conference. As one of the chairmen of the. Cpu- ference. Dr. Cadman labored to eradi¬ cate ignorance, as the first, prerequi-: site tp understanding., The principles, laid down by Dr. Cadman and his as--, ,. sociates have since been adopted as ¦. the guide posts for the development of ;-¦-. a healthy mutual esteem arnong the various races and religions that make up the American people, Brought into being at a thnc when the more militant fqi-ms'of Jew-baiting in" this country,': were quiescent, the National Confer- ¦ ence, a product of Dh Cadman*s [, vision, has long since justified itself ! as an ,invaluable instrumentality, for , helping to expose the fallacious'bases ¦ of prejudice and clarifying the factors that make for racial and .religions mis- .understandirig.
Three years, ago, whpa the Hitler madness enveloped Europe and even some sections of the American people. Dr. Cadinan, then nearing three score . . and ten, showed that his lifelong ef¬ forts tP bring- about.harmonious,rela- , tipns between Jews and, Christians were not. circumscribed ,by national boundaries but were deep-rooted and
_^ _ .universal. When in 1933 the question
keenly, aware of the role the church a^'ose whether the Jews, faced with an, could ahd should play in meeting tUein. | organized and world-wide assault on Tt was not his" idea of the ministry
[that the clergyman's function ended at the threshold of the church. His was a broader vision of responsibility. He took the lead in pointing the way toward a,n advanced program of social justice in the church. It was he who pioneered in turning the church into new and untrod paths of human rela¬ tions.
Tt was this social consciousness that led him inevitably into the front ranks f those who combated the forces of darkness and hate that threatened the teachings pf Christianity. Dr. Cad- man's first niajor achievement in be¬ half of religious liberty was the Com¬ mission on Religious Relations be¬ tween Jews and Christians; This body, organized as an integral part of the powerful Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America during Dr. Cad- man's presidency of, that body, was something unprecedented. There had of course been individual Christians, laymen' as well as riien pf the cloth, wlip had spoken out vigorously against attempts to inject old-world racial and I religious l)rejudices into the social
their, very existence, would be left standing alone or whether Christen- , dom would l^ft^lip its voice in behalf of a persecuted people, it was Dr. Gad- man who spoke first. His was the first voice in , American Christianity, to speak put in protest, nobly and bravely. In a historic message tP the Christian churches of Germany he .: warned that Hitler's attempt to de¬ stroy the Jews was a grievpiis wrong against Christianity, arid he urged the. Christians of Germany to speak out. As the chairman of .the American sec¬ tion of the Universal Christian Coun¬ cil, the central body ol all Christian, sects except^the Catholic Church, he was instrumental in having the Coun¬ cil issue a ringing call to Jhe Chris¬ tians of the world to rally to the sup¬ port of the suffering Jews.
Since then he has labored^-unceas¬ ingly to mobilize Christian public opiniPii to an appreciation ;0f the mag-. nitud6 of. the crime being committed against civilization in Germany. His niost challenging move was a call to Protestantism and Catholicism to issue (Continued on page 4)
