The Silver-shifters recently moved into new ofliccs at 'iKi Lankershiin Building, with every appearance of in¬ tending to go into the Jew-hating business on a big scale. Heading the local cell is Kenneth Alexander, cx-niolioii picture tech¬ nician, "the Chief's pcr-sonal represen¬ tative" in Southern California, and Henry Allen, cadaverous unemployed inetallurgi.st, recently convicted in a local court of dissemin..iting viciously anti-Semitic leaflets. The oflices are comfortably fur¬ nished. On one wall of the sanctum, ail oversize portrait of "the Chief, complete in shirt and pointed heard, glowers. Freely mentioned in conver¬ sation is "The Dcutschers' Haus", hangout for local friends of Hitler, where Allen recently admitted in court, he frequently takes consign¬ ments of hand-bills bearing the legend "Get Rid of Rooseveh and His Jews I" "We're not as much afraid ol Commu¬ nists as of Jews," Alexander declares. "There's a lot wrong, these days. The Communists and ourselves both go to¬ gether, up to a certain point. At that point, they get off on the wrong track." He placed two books on the floor, one in front of the other. "This," be said, indicating ths one fartlie.st from him, "is the state of things that ought to obtain in America; and this," pointing to the one nearest him, "is the Jews. We've got to push the Jews out of the way"—he suited the action to fhe word—"in order to reach the goal, see! We don't want to hurt the Jews," Alexander further insisted. "We just want to protect them from the violence that is sure to come when people realize what Jews af^' A^yng to them. Why, we're already building stockades at diflferent points through¬ out the country, nito which we'll herd the Jews, when the violence comes. Tt'll be for their own protection, of course, you understand." Handel's "Judas Maccabeus" De-3udaized BERLIN (WNS)—The "de-Juda- fication" of German music, which is part of the intensified Nazi drive to ehminate all traces of Jewish influence from German culture, has hit Freid- rich Handel's world-famous oratorio, "Judas Maccabeus." The biblical text of this work has been replaced by a German text entitled "Hero and Work for Peace," which was written by Herman Burte, Nazi dramatist. IMAYOR APPEALS FORI PASSAGE OF WATER WORKS BOND ISSUE Editor, Ohio Jewish Chronicle, 232 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio. Dear Sir: 1 am enclosing herewith a mimeo¬ graph cppy of a statement of the facts regarding the bond issue for. the improvement of the Municipal Water Works System which will he voted on by the citizens at the election on November 3rd. This is strictl}r a non-political proposition and one which is solely for the benefit and protection of the citi¬ zens of Columbus. I might say in addition, that the entire amount of this bond issue will be derived from the revenues in the Water Department (which will not need to be increased at the present rate) and which will not be added to the tax duplicate. It is necessary to put this bond issue to the voters for the reason that the banded in¬ debtedness of the city has reached the maximum point in past years allowed by law and it is now nec¬ essary to submit every bond issue to a vote of the people. I might say in addition that the needs of the City of Columbus for water are incr^easing tremendously each year and we cannot take eare of this demand unless vre have the necessary added improvements. Wilh kindest personal regards I am Very Truly Yours, MYRON B. GESSAMAN, Mayor, City of Columbus. LOS ANGELiiS (WNS)—Seven thousand Jews and Christians who jamined the Slirnic Civic Auditorium to cap.icity at the greatest dcnioiistra- tioii against "Ilitlerism in America" ever staged on the Pacific Coast hy representative citizens ol all faiths .ulopted several resolutions with which thcy hope to arouse action against the Nazi movement in this country. Sev¬ eral hundred were unable to find seats in the auditorium artd stood outside. Amid thunderous applause from the audience, which was stirred by ad¬ dresses by Dr. L. M. Birkhead of Kansas City, Congressman Byron N- Scott, Gifford Cochran ot New York. Eddie Cantor, Mayor Frank L. Shaw of Los Angeles, Oscar Hammerslein 2iid, J. W. Buzzell of Central Trades and' Labor Council of this city, and others, resolutions were adopted de¬ manding: that Dean Cromwellj-Uni¬ versity of Southern California and Olympic track ciach, apologize for his assertedly pro-Nazi remarks at a gathering of Nazi sympathizers here recently; that U. S. Secretary of State Hull show more aggressiveness in getting Lawrence Simpson, Ameri¬ can sailor imprisoned in Germany, out of jail, and pledging that over 2,000 members of the Hollywood Anti-Nazi League Youth Movement "will war against Nazism in defense of Ameri¬ can democracy." Representative citi¬ zens of Hollywood, including a group of motion picture stars and studio ex; ccutives, and noted leaders of Christian thought in Los Angeles were present at the rally. Despite the fact tliat Governor Landon "spoke in this city the same night, the tremendous in¬ terest in anti-Nazi activities jn this vicinity was reflected in the fact that the huge Shrine aiiditorium was sold, out many hours before the rally opened. Seats sold for from ten cents to three dollars each. Lewis B'rowne, famous author, was chairman of- the meeting. The Dean Cromwell incident, which for the past month has been the sub¬ ject of heated debate among anti-Nazi groups here, was brought to a new climax by Congressman SCott of Long Beach, Calif., who presented the reso¬ lution, passed by the audience and to be forwarded to, the USC-Olympic coach, which contains a pledge of Americanism and apology, whrch Cromwell is'asked to sign. It was reported that Cromvyell ex¬ pressed a willingness to sign the apol¬ ogy and pledge of opposition to Nazism, but after a talk with Presi¬ dent Rufus Von Kleinsmid of the Uni¬ versity of Southern Cahfornia, he re¬ fused to do so. The statement Crom¬ well refused to sign reads as follows; "I am opposed to the antidemocratic principles of Nazism and opposed to the propagandization of tiiese princi¬ ples in our democracy and I apologize for any word or action of mine whicb could, by the wildest stretch of the imagination, have been construed as evidencing support of those activities which I so earnestly oppose." Mayor Shaw, who spoke at the same Nazi gathering addressed by Crom¬ well, gave up attendance at the Gov¬ ernor Landon rally to tell the anti- Nazis at the Shrine that he is opposed to racial and religious oppression and favors the American ideals of toler¬ ance. LONDON (WNS)—Blackshirt at¬ tacks on the Jews of Lomlan's East End were characterized as "mon¬ strous" by the London Diocesan Con- fcreiKc of the Clnirch of England in a resolution calling upon all Chris¬ tians to colnbat anti-Semitism. In its first statement on the Fascist dis¬ orders, the Conference, which was presided over by the Bishop of Lon¬ don, declared that "there is no enmity bfttween the Gentile and Jew. They may not always be agreed but thcy Jive together iu peace. It is monstrous tliat~a body of outsiders should go <lovvirto disturb the peace of London Jew and Gentile must make a cum- 111011 front to meet the interference of outsiders" The Conference also as¬ serted that "while fully aware that difliculties must arise from tbe pres¬ ence in certain districts of large pop¬ ulation? of differing religidus beliefs and social habits, asserts tbe fact that Jlw and Christian 'are chiUlren of God, and therefore calls on all Chris- -tians to stand firm against any and every attempt to arouse anti-Semitic feelings for political 'or any other ends." The municipal authorities of Car¬ diff. Wales, have banned the wearing of political uniforms at public meet¬ ings. A similar ban is being pre¬ pared by other cities in anticipation of legislation outlawing nnifornis. Kuhn's proclamation announces that "iHjIitical leaders arc to be ap¬ pointed in all districts" to carry out his orders, and warns that "participa¬ tion in the elections is not only a civic but alio a League (Bund) duty." Kuhn also ordered the Nazis to vote for the Republican candidate for gov¬ ernor of New York, whose opponent i^ Governor Herbert H. Lehman. Kuhn, who is regarded as one of America's outstanding ynti-Semites. was decorated by Hitler only last summer in rcrognition of ins 50r\ites to the Nazi cause in th:: United expectation tbat the United States would be more friendly to Nazi Germauv if Govcrmir Landon became President is contradicted by Governor Landon's opinions on Nazi persecution of Jews and Catholics, whicli he expressed in a letter to Eu¬ gene McyeT. publisher of tbe Wash¬ ington Post, in lOS-y. In that letter Governor Landon said: "The doings and the sufferings of the people who make up the Ger¬ man community are so shocking as to convince me tliat the leaders, whg dominate the German people by force ' of arms, ha\e forgotten al! teachings of justice and love. The intolerant and drastic treatment of minorities in Germany should cause Americans, be¬ fore casting stones, to ask ourselves whether wc, too, have not been fol¬ lowing false gods in neglecting our churches too frequently and in failing to pay sulficient attention to religious precepts and principles. No people can prosper, no nation can live and no civili/ation can exist, that ignores the Ciiristian principles of justice and 16\c and moral conduct. When they arc forg-otten, the natural result is a dic¬ tatorship and the end of all aims of a free people. Germany is the latest illustration of the well-known fact that a free church and a free democ¬ racy go hand ni band. Whenever re- l gious freedom ib threatened, individ¬ ual rights are trampled by force, and the clanking of swords and the flash of bayonets Sihock civili/ed people in their brutality." 7,000 PLEDGE WAR ON
NAZISM AND FASCISM
IN CALIFORNIA
Maccabees Score Again
LOS ANGF.LKS (WNS)—After two years of comparative dormancy, the Silver Shirt Legion of America— "Chief" William Dudley Pcllcy's col¬ ored shirt outfit—bolstered by a mys¬ terious supply nf funds, has rc-cstah- lishcd headquarters in Los Angeles.
At that point, they get off on the wrong track."
He placed two books on the floor, one in front of the other. Tt'll be for their own protection, of course, you understand."
Handel's "Judas Maccabeus" De-3udaized
BERLIN (WNS)—The "de-Juda- fication" of German music, which is part of the intensified Nazi drive to ehminate all traces of Jewish influence from German culture, has hit Freid- rich Handel's world-famous oratorio, "Judas Maccabeus." The biblical text of this work has been replaced by a German text entitled "Hero and Work for Peace," which was written by Herman Burte, Nazi dramatist.
IMAYOR APPEALS FORI PASSAGE OF WATER WORKS BOND ISSUE
Editor, Ohio Jewish Chronicle, 232 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio. Dear Sir:
1 am enclosing herewith a mimeo¬ graph cppy of a statement of the facts regarding the bond issue for. the improvement of the Municipal Water Works System which will he voted on by the citizens at the election on November 3rd.
Wilh kindest personal regards I am
Very Truly Yours, MYRON B.
The statement Crom¬ well refused to sign reads as follows; "I am opposed to the antidemocratic principles of Nazism and opposed to the propagandization of tiiese princi¬ ples in our democracy and I apologize for any word or action of mine whicb could, by the wildest stretch of the imagination, have been construed as evidencing support of those activities which I so earnestly oppose."
Mayor Shaw, who spoke at the same Nazi gathering addressed by Crom¬ well, gave up attendance at the Gov¬ ernor Landon rally to tell the anti- Nazis at the Shrine that he is opposed to racial and religious oppression and favors the American ideals of toler¬ ance.
