Yom Kippur services will begin Tuesday evening with the .singing of the ancient mclgdy "Kol Nidre" and will conclude the Ten Days of Peni¬ tence wliich began last week with the observance of the Jewish New Year. Pious Jews will spend thc entire day in the synagogue, neither er(iing, nor drinking, but devoting it entirely, to meditation and prayer. . The 'Day of Atonement is distin¬ guished from, most, other holidays in that it is associated vvith no historical event. The day, is put"cly an attempt at sel£-regeneration and at-one-nient with God-., Although, its roots reach ,far back into primitive times and may have some relation to an .ancient equinoctial festival, the- day received its present character ill the Bible period. Before the beginning of the common era,: when the Temple in Jerusalem still ..stood, the high^purposes'bf thc day xvere expressed in rites of aiiimal sacrifice, the comition form of wor¬ ship, in the, ancient world. Since the year 70, however, the central theme of thc Titual has been Penitence, Prayer, and Righteous Action. , Remnants of the temple ritiial are still found in the present-day worship for Yom Kippun '¦ The beautiful cdri-; chiding service for the day is known as .''Ne'ilah," ,"the closing of the gates." This undoubtedly refers to the . closing of the Temple gates, al¬ though it has now taken on- the added symbolical meaning of the closing of the gate of tears.and supplication and the opening of the gate of God's mercy. In this is, revealed the all-em¬ bracing message of tli^day: that God's forgiveness and blessing "are bestoWed on all who manifest, a sincere, desire to lead a good life. . C .(WNS)— Nqtwith-standing ¦ the disclosure .that llic Sttitc Department permitted Pren¬ tiss Gilbert, American charge d'affaires in. Berlin, to accept, an invitation to attend the Nazi Frirty congress, at Nuremberg over the-strong, objections of William, E. Dodd, the American ambassador,'who is: now in this coun¬ try, Secretary of State Hull indicated that neither M.r. Dodd's objections nor the .numerous protests from Amer¬ ican organizations would result in or¬ ders to Mr.. Gilbert not to attend. While it is understood that Ambassa¬ dor Dodd opposed: American partici¬ pation on the ground that it: would create the impression that th6 Unitbd States Covernment' approves of Nazi party' policies;.'Secretary Hull denied that such was the "injplication. He said it was a routine acceptance of an invitation to attend a function at which nearly all other powers would be rep¬ resented and was in no,way to be con¬ strued as passing judgment on ques¬ tions, that might bp discussed at the congress. The obvious disagreement between Secretary: Hull and Ambas¬ sador Dodd gayeit^ise to reports that the. latter, long^ iri the bad gra<;es. of the Nazi regime because o.f his known anti-Nazi views, would resigfi. At the same time Secretary Hull took cognizance bf the recent asser¬ tion of Germany's, foreign minister, Konstantin yon Neurath, that the.Nazi government would; not "tolerate that foreign powers shbuld. discriminate against Germans whhin' their bounda^ ries because of .Nazi affiliations," by is¬ suing a statement, in which he warned that the United States would not toler¬ ate dual allegiance. Remarking that the speeches ,at the Congress of Ger¬ mans Abroad "have pot been brought officially to the attention of the State Department," Mr. Hull said, "I desire to strpss that all persons- of foreign birth who acquire United' States ^citi¬ zenship by. naturalization declare an oath in open court.that they will sup¬ port and defend the Constitution of the United States, and that they absolutely and. entirely, i-enounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign priiice, potentate, state or sovereignty and particularly by name the- prince, potentate, state or sovereignty of which they-were before citizens or sub¬ jects ; that they vvill support and. de¬ fend the ConstiUitipn and laws of the United States against all enemies, for¬ eign and domestic, and bear true fahh and allegiance to the same. It is thus clear that , with their new allegiance their undivided duty is the support of our Constitution, our laws and our flag," :' Local Jewry To, Celiebrate Constitution Day Next Friday Evening On next Friday evening, September 17, at the Bryden Rd. Yom Kippur Services Will
Begin in All Synagogues
Tuesday Evening
Jews, in this community will join their" co-religionists all over the globe in observing Yoin Kippur, "The Day of Atonement,", next Wednesday (Sept. 15)., Known as the "Sabbath of Sabbaths" Vorn :Kippiir is the most sacred day of thc Jewish religious calendar and is observed with fasting, prayer, and repentance. . .
Since the year 70, however, the central theme of thc Titual has been Penitence, Prayer, and Righteous Action. ,
Remnants of the temple ritiial are still found in the present-day worship for Yom Kippun '¦ The beautiful cdri-; chiding service for the day is known as .''Ne'ilah," ,"the closing of the gates." This undoubtedly refers to the . closing of the Temple gates, al¬ though it has now taken on- the added symbolical meaning of the closing of the gate of tears.and supplication and the opening of the gate of God's mercy. In this is, revealed the all-em¬ bracing message of tli^day: that God's forgiveness and blessing "are bestoWed on all who manifest, a sincere, desire to lead a good life. . '

BERLIN (WNS)—Courage in the face of adversity, and a plea to look to the future without despair were the keynot.cs' of the ,Rosh Hashanah mes-. sage to the harassed Jews, of Germany made: public by the Reichvcrtretung der Deutsche Juden, centrarrepresen- tative agency of German Jewry. The message said: "Wc live in .times oi riish ahd change. Every year appears to us to be a separate chapter in our history. What will befall us is in the hands of the Almighty, but our ber havior, whatever is in store for us,' de¬ pends upon ourselves. Man must show his worth in his every trial and must strive to make Gad's wilt a reality. Our wish to alt and.sundry is summed up in the verse of the Psalm with which the Jevys usher in their New Year: *Wait on the Lord and be of good courage and He shall strengthen thine heart.
