Of a Class of 17
Shdvuous, the Feast of Weeks, or Pentecost, will be observed by thc Jewish people beginning;tonight (Sat¬ urday) May 15), and will be celebrated for two days by Orthodox Jews and for one day by Reform Jews, Reflect¬ ing the two-fold origin of the holiday, synagogues will be decked with green branches and flowers and the .Tcii Commandinents . will be read in the synagogue service. The; greenery rep- i resents- thc spring harvest, festival > chat-acter of the Feast of Weeks while the other; fesitures'of the holiday are in recognition of thc fact that Shoviios. is the traditional'season of the giving of the "Torah.V or law, on Mount Sinai. •
Shovups, ,which '. literally, means "weeks," takes its haiiie from-the fact that,it is celebrated a week of weeks, that is seven', weeks, after Passover. Greek-speaking Jews more than two thousand years ago gave: the holiday the name "Pentecost"-because of the fifty days counted from the spcOnd eve¬ ning of Passover,to the Shovuos fes;- ¦tival.,
:The holiday ¦ is .one -;of ¦ the ".ihree pilgrjm festivals" of the Bible arid in I olden days was the.occasion for the' bringing of the offerings of first-^fruita | and of grain to; the Temple in Jerusa- i leiri. The agricultural significance of the hohday is signified by the reading i of the B*ook .of Ruth, with its idyllic scenes of husbandry and harvesting. ;The book also sounds a univcrsalistic j message in its stoify; wherein -Ruth, a hon-:Jcwess, became^ the ancestress of the beloved figure ;of King David.
When the Reform Synagogue intro¬ duced the rite of Confirmation, for Jewish; youth, Peritecost, by virtue of its traditional association with the an¬ cient revelation, was the day most nat¬ urally selected; Through an impres¬ sive .public ceremony, young boys and girls, having beeii taught: the meaining;, of the; Jewish faith' and the duty of leading a religious and niorat life, ac¬ cept this faith as did their forefathers at Mount Siriai.
