ASSIMILATIONIST VIEWPOINT IS ATTACKED BY LEADERS
PHILADELPHIA (WNS)—A prediction that all Jewish institutions in the United States except those of, a purely religious character will ulti¬ mately vanish and endorsement of the assimilationist viewpoint in Jewish life as a desirable thing for Ameri¬ can ¦ Jewry were made by George Backer, chairman of the Jewish Tele¬ graphic Agency, in an address at the fourth annual assembly of 'the Coun¬ cil of Jewish Federations and Wel¬ fare Funds, Speaking in his personal capacity, Mr^ Backer said that "thc pystCm qf democracy under which we live ca1l& for the participation of its citizens }n an individual capacity. Ethnic or religious groups have no standing'as such and it is to endanger that process when groups, cither re¬ ligious or ethnic, attempt to create power through such: groupings." He also asserted that political democracy, "invalidates the old principle of Juda¬ ism as a force other than religious" since "in theory there exists in a democracy such as ours no reason for religious communities to operate ex¬ cept Jn the religious fields. Jewish institutions must eventually look for¬ ward to the time when they may dis¬ appear; that time of course being the point. at which our democratic sys¬ tem approaches the ideal upon which it is founded." Mr, Backer further stated that "Jews in: America must accept the ideals, of democracy as the basis of .their philosophies—or alter¬ natively, if they do not accept it, they must hot pretend that their own coh- ceptions do not interfere with the processes of American life; It is of course possible for a man to believe that Judaism is a way of life, that he prefers that way of life to any, other; but the peirsoh making "this decision is not attempting to further, the American experiment in democracy and must be considered as having dis¬ missed American culture as a desir¬ able possibility." Emphasizing that he is not "particularly impressed with the attitude that, assimilation is an unworthy goal," Mr. Backer, husband of the granddaughter of Jacob H. Schiff and niece of^eliiK M. War¬ burg, denied that Jews in America are the products of Jewish culture atone and claimed that "we are even more strongly the product' of the gifts of liberalism to the modern world," and added that "the free gifts of the present from a liberal past are much more .responsible for what we are than our Jewish heritage."
Mr. Backer was answered in ad¬ dresses by. Morris Rothenberg, chair¬ maii of the administrative committee bf the Zionist Organization of .Amer¬ ica, and Judge Samuel L Roseman of the New York State Supreme Court. Mr. Rothenberg lauded the council for its achievements in the mechan¬ ical processes of Jewish communal life and called for a broadening of its communal activities. This, lie said, would mean "a deepening of the educational influences of the Council and its constituent, organiza¬ tions through the attii^ulation of com¬ munity-wide thought and actions in all that pertains to the causes which they service; a reaching out beyond temporary campaign slogans and me¬ chanical fund-raising processes; a manifestation of. spiritual kinship with those deeper inner .needs and aspira¬ tions that touch the wetlsprings of Jewish life." Mr. Rothenberg also urged the Council to support the task of upbuilding Palestine not only for the sake of the Zionist cause but be¬ cause "it operates as a potent force to preserve the Jew and Judaism in America." Warning that American Jewry is not immune "to the corrod¬ ing influences of assimilation that have caused Jewish group life to crumble away in many lands so thcit our people and their culture came to depend for survival upon the nega¬ tive pressure of anti-Semitism," Mr. Rothenberg said (hat "there are those to whoin the preservation of Jewish life is of no moment. Alas, they havtf failed tp learn the lesson of the tragic but- illuminating experience of recent years. Have we not all been witnesses to the bankruptcy of the policy of Jewish self-denial, which Is but self-betrayal? (Gennany was the

BERLIN (WNS),—The elimination of Jews from the German educational system has been,, achieved "without causing the educational system of art and literature, as, previously often happened, to break down" but, on the contrary, "it flourishes nowmore than ever" and thereby "immunizes thc German people against subversive ten¬ dencies from which the. rest of the world .suffers," Chancellor Hitler de¬ clared in the course of his lengthy ad¬ dress to the Reichstag on the occasion of the fourth aniiiversary of his regime. In an address curiousl> re¬ strained on the Jewish question, the Nazi dictator mentioned the Jews by name only three. times arid never the violent anti-Semitic language which he and his coadjustors have employed in the past.' '¦ ¦
At another point in his address he emphasized that in order to attain the Nazi party's goat "it,was also essential that the theory of race and soil should not only be' promulgated but deeply inculcated in the iicople. Just as surely as the .discovery tliat the earth revolves around the '^iin had produced a new. world picture, so in an equal measure the National Socialist theory of race and soil had created a new principle which had to leave its his¬ toric imprint on, thc future.". The third reference to the Jews was in connection with his attack on Itussia. At this point he said that "National Socialism has not, gone to' Russia to get contact with Bolshevism, hut the Jewish Jntemational of Moscow has tried to'penetrate Germany, and still is trying it," ¦

(WNS)-.Pleas tor reintensification of the anti-Nazi bfjy- cott vyere the keynotes of,virtually all addresses at the mass; meeting spon¬ sored by the Non-Sectarian Anti- Nazi League at Carnegie Hall on the occasion of thc f6urth anniversary of the Hitler regime., William Green, president of the Anierican Federation of. Labor, led (he !altacfc on' the' Nazi goyerntneut iTi..a:.r:?view of. tUe-Hit¬ lerites' destruction of the German la¬ bor unions., Again pledging Anierican labor to support of tlie boycott, he called on the America people to shun German goods and services as, long aa persecution, -intolerance an-I repres¬ sion are imposed .upon the working people and upon the Jewisli race." Wilhelm Sollman, former German minister of the interior, attacked Hit¬ ler's assertion in his fourth anniver¬ sary speech that the Nazi "evolution had , been bloodless. Sollman cited facts proving that 200,000 mote per¬ sons died in the four year.* of Nazi rule than in the previous period. He blamed these deaths on the food short¬ age, the lowered standard of living, the suicide of Jews and the ,b.-»rbarism of the government. In a ,'message from Samuel Untermyer read V Mrs. Mark Harris the reported. German- American commercial pact was de nounced and derman-Americans sym¬ pathetic to Nazism were assailed as undesirable. HARRY GOLDBERG
You have often heard the remark that the jew should be Just a little more particular about what he says and docs—should coiiform to a higher ethical standard—than men and. women of numerically dominating ; religious groiips, because all, Jewry is judged by the individual's mode of life.
When on Aug. 22, 1936, the 40 and 8 of ,Ohio of the American Legion desired to do honor to a comrade whose labors on behalf of that or¬ ganization revealed true' .devotion to thc^highest ideals of which the human heart is capablfe, it chose Harry Gold¬ berg as (jrand Chef de Gare. By their action any suspicion as to the exist¬ ence of religious prejudice in that group was certainly proven otherwise. Goldberg was the, first; Jew in Ohio to be elevated to this high office.
Emerson has said that every insti- tutiorl ;or organization is but the lengthened shadow,of an individual. The 40 and 8 of Ohio existed and progressed before, Harry Goldberg came' upon the scene; biit it is he and others like himself who have given it the character, meaning and signifir cance—have made it a vital force in the state and nation. ' ,
, Last week Mr. (^oldberg and a num¬ ber of other Legion officials madie,a tour of inspection of the flooded area and surveyed conditions, there. The people of Ohio, benevolent and mag¬ nanimous in taking care of emergen¬ cies irt our own state and concentrat¬ ing on successfully alleviating suffer¬ ing here through the American Red Cross, somehow did not come to the realization of the,:important. part, the American Legion was playing in this great catastrophe. According to Gold¬ berg, it; was the Legion ^ that stepped into this picture immediately and per¬ formed a real service tintil organized relief groups were perfected.-
"The American Red Gross today has the, flood sitiiation well in hand, but to the American Legion mem¬ bers who gave unstintingly of their time, money and efforts, all of us owe an everlasting debt of gratitude,' Goldberg said.
. Mr. Goldberg is the son of Mn and Mrs. A. Goldberg, well-known pioneer leaders in local Jewish communal af¬ fairs^ and liyes with his family at 19? S. Cassingham Rd., Bexley. He, to gether wi(h his brother, Arthur, op¬ erate the Goldberg Iron & SteeVCo, and the'Golco Oil Co. Mrs. Harry Goldberg is President of the Colum¬ bus section, Council of Jewish Women.
NEW YORK (WNS)^Immediatc steps lo restore to the Polish Jews thc tninian and national rights of which they are now being deprived under government sanction were demanded of the Polish govcrnnicnfby 240(1 del¬ egates representing 835 organizations, 'Vl of tlicm national, who, attended the emergency, conference on-Poland con¬ vened by the American Jewish Con¬ gress. In a'long and sober documented statement outlining the history of Po¬ land's discrimination against the Jews, which, was read by M. Maldwin Fer¬ tig, chairman of the Congress' organi- .iation committee and counsel to Presi dent Ijtooseveit when the latter was governor of New 'York. This state¬ ment of grievances warned the Polish government ¦ that Jews will, never ac¬ cept without resistance the attempt to declare, that 3,000,000 Polish Jews are a superfluous section of the population and therefore to be forced to migrate. The document also charged JPoland with : pursuing a . policy deliberately designed to make the Jews superfluous and thereupon forcing their expatria tion; asked Foreign Minister Keck to repeat in the Polish parliament his declaration to' American correspond¬ ents iin Geneva that Poland is not seeking the expatriation of the ilarger section of Polish Jews on the' ground that they are aliens and superfluous, in the light of the fact that representa¬ tives of the government have demanded in iiarliament such action without re-^ pudiation by Beck; stressed the fact that 76% of Polish Jewry is without means of livelihood and that one:sixth of the Jewish population is dependent for existence upon gifts from, rela¬ tives abroad; took cognizance of thc government's difficulties in, the solu¬ tion of social and e'conomic, problems; called upon the large, sections of Po¬ lish population opposed to anti-Semi¬ tism and the, liberty-loving Poles in America to associate themselves "the undertaking to prevent national dishonor by Poland."
Statistics cited in the statement showed that from January to Decem¬ ber, 1936, there were 430 attacks on
Jews in 179 villages resulting'in the death of G9 Jews and the injury of 800 . others, 37 bombings of Jewish property and 27 desecrations of syna¬ gogues and cemeteries. It viras fur¬ ther emphasized; that protestations by the Polish government of its-opposi¬ tion to the riots might'be accepted on their face value "were it not for the fact that thc riots continue and the failure of the government tO suppress them except in the most brutal irtr stances; of the courts to punish the rioters and the; victimization, of Jews on the spurious charges of ,'insult to thc Polish nation.''". The conference commended the Polish minister of, edu¬ cation for refusing to issue instructions for the mstitution of ghetto benches in the Polish universities, but asserted' that- the student riots are the respon¬ sibility of the government because it has helped to perpetuate the conditidns responsible for the' present university situation, "through its toleration for years of its numerous clauses in the, , academic institutions df the country; through its toleration of the boycott movement against Jews in other fields; through its failure to curb anti-JeWish riots in universities, in past years; . through its own action; in degrading . Jews to an inferior status; through its weakness \n dealing with univer¬ sity rioters and agitators."
Senator Joseph T. Robinson, ma¬ jority leader of the United States Sen¬ ate,\sent a telegram to the conference reminding Poland of the part which the United States government played in bringing about the independence of Poland and thfe reconstitution of the Polish republic. "It is astonishing'and distressing," he declared, "to take note of recent events indicating a purpose on the part of prominent representa¬ tives of the Polish goyernmeiit Jtq . drive out 3,600.000 Jews." While em¬ phasizing that "we cannot control the policies of any foreign government," Senatoi* Robinson said it would be "promotive of p^acc and good will and progress if representatives of public authority everywhere would recognize (Cpntitked on page 4)

A special invitation is extended to young married couples to be present ^nd to interest themselves in the ac¬ tivities of the Forum.
An original one-act comedy, "Dr. Solomon Solomon," will be presented by a group of Hillel students from Ohio State University at the next reg¬ ular meeting of the Rose E. Lazarus Sisterhood to be held Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 2 p. m., at the Bryden Road Temple. Rabbi Harry Kaplan, di¬ rector of (he Hillel Foundation at O. S. Under the leadership of Mrs, Albert Schiff, chiairman, and Mrs. WilHam Schiff, co-chairman; the Infant Wel¬ fare Drive foi- the Columbus Chapter of National Hadassah is now in progress. From reports that have come in from the various committees Friday, there is every indication that the goal will be reached within the next 10 days. AIL those -who haye not as yet been solicited, Mrs. Schiff announces, will be called on during the coming week.
The proceeds of the campaign will provide nourishment for Palestinian cbildren and offer pre-natal care for the mothers. Twenty-three sanitary milk stations take care of, ihe thou¬ sands of expectant mothers in Pales¬ tine, and their children. As a result of this work done. by Hadassah, a recent research showed a marked in¬ fant and maternity mortality reduction in that land.
Success of-the work of the recon¬ struction of Palestine depends first upon health of the people livinjg and working in the , country. Hadassah believes that by giving the infant a good healthy start, it Will contribute greatly towards the upbuilding of the country.
As the budget for this year's drive has heen increased due to the influx of many German children refugees into Palestine, a greater response is needed in order to reach the quota of the Hadassah Infant Welfare Drive. Mrs.- Albert Schiff seeks the coopera¬ tion of Columbus Jewry in the suct cessful conclusion of this great effort.

Jewish institutions must eventually look for¬ ward to the time when they may dis¬ appear; that time of course being the point. at which our democratic sys¬ tem approaches the ideal upon which it is founded." Mr, Backer further stated that "Jews in: America must accept the ideals, of democracy as the basis of .their philosophies—or alter¬ natively, if they do not accept it, they must hot pretend that their own coh- ceptions do not interfere with the processes of American life; It is of course possible for a man to believe that Judaism is a way of life, that he prefers that way of life to any, other; but the peirsoh making "this decision is not attempting to further, the American experiment in democracy and must be considered as having dis¬ missed American culture as a desir¬ able possibility." Emphasizing that he is not "particularly impressed with the attitude that, assimilation is an unworthy goal" Mr. Backer, husband of the granddaughter of Jacob H. Schiff and niece of^eliiK M. War¬ burg, denied that Jews in America are the products of Jewish culture atone and claimed that "we are even more strongly the product' of the gifts of liberalism to the modern world" and added that "the free gifts of the present from a liberal past are much more .responsible for what we are than our Jewish heritage." Mr. Rothenberg also urged the Council to support the task of upbuilding Palestine not only for the sake of the Zionist cause but be¬ cause "it operates as a potent force to preserve the Jew and Judaism in America." Warning that American Jewry is not immune "to the corrod¬ ing influences of assimilation that have caused Jewish group life to crumble away in many lands so thcit our people and their culture came to depend for survival upon the nega¬ tive pressure of anti-Semitism" Mr. Rothenberg said (hat "there are those to whoin the preservation of Jewish life is of no moment.
