NEW YORK (WNS)—Diplomatic intervention by all democratic govern¬ ments, including the United States, to comi>el Poland to safeguard the rights of the Jewish minority in her terri¬
tory was urged by Supreme Court Justice William T. Collins in an ad¬ dress at the banquet session of the '20th annual convention of the Federa¬ tion of Polish Jews in America. Re¬ calling thc eiforts of the late Louis* Marshall to include in the constitution of Poland a clause guaranteeing equal rights for all nationalities within her borders, and emphasi?:ing that Poland 'accepted the sacred provisions of this contract as a condition of her 're¬ creation," Justice Collins declared: It behooves all people who stand for democracy, it behooves all govern¬ ments that claim to be democratic, to exercise e\ery lawful and legitimate measure to compel Poland to recog¬ nize her .obligations to thc minority groups within her horders in accord¬ ance with thu Minorities Treaty slu signed at thc Peace Conference of iOin." After citing precedcntti \\\ which the United States intervened hi behalf of iKrsecuted Jews abroad, thc New York jurist said that "if Poland is honest and smcere and ca¬ pable of self-government she must rec¬ ognize her obligations to all her citi¬ zens. If something is iwt dune, aud dune quickly, Poland wilt go thc way of all fanatics. There is no more excuse lor Poland to go Nazi tlian there is for America to go Nazi." Other speakers at the banquet .session were George Goj'don Battle, Judge Mitchell May, Benjamin Winter,-pres- idcnt of the federation, Beriiard G.
Richards atid Harry ITershfield, who i.vas toastmaster.
The keynote of all thc addresses was the urgency df protesting against Polish anti^Semit&n and bringing re¬ lief to-its. victimf^: Slinuel Untermyer warned Poland that the anti-Nazi boy¬ cott may be applied to that country unless she takes steps to end progroms aud anti-Semitic policies. He also de¬ plored the competition in raising funds for Polish Jewish relief between the federation's AmeriLan Cummittcc Appeal aud the Joint Distribution Conimittec, and offered to serve as an intermediary to combine the two cam¬ paigns, cither in the collection or dis tribution of funds, or both. The con¬ vention adopted a public declaration "against the intolerable series of po¬ groms which have aipicted and made unbearable the lives of 3,500,0(1(^ Jews who constitute the Jewish community in Poland" and appealed lo the gov¬ ernments of thc world who signed the treaty by which Jews in Poland were guaranteed full minority rights to protest thc denial of protection and equal opportunities of Jews in Poland and that they act in concert "to pre- .serve the destiny of a people who have lived and toiled in Poland for more than 1,000 years." All labor, Livic aud religious groups in Jewish life were urged to act in unison I towartl helping the Jews in Poland and to coordinate their efiforts in one major movement seeking alleviation of the distress of Polish Jewry. Other sppakerj* included Jeremiah T. Ma¬ honey, Z. Tygel and Dr. Henry Szoskies of Pobnd, secretary of the Polish Distributing Committee of thc American Committee Appeal.
'American Protestantism Brands Hitler Foe of ^ Christianity
NKW VORK (WNS)—Ilitlcr and tlic Na/i regime were l)raiided foes ot Lhrlstianity by organized Proles- tanti-,ni in tlie United States when the i'ederal Council of Churches of Clirist, representing 'l\\ national Prot¬ estant deiioininations, made public a resolution adopted by its executive council vi'hich charged the Third Reich with definite hostility to tlie Chris¬ tian religion. .\t the same time thc Cnuiicirs secretary emeritus. Dr. Cliailos S. Mad'arlaiul, uhu four years ago opposed thc anti-Nari boy¬ cott and urged that Hitler he given a chance to jirove himself, made pub¬ lic the text of a long letter addrtsbcd to the Fuehrer in which hc accused him of having deliberately brolcen all piuinises made in l!!^!) with regard to the Christian churches and the Jews. The Federal Council's decla¬ ration assertini][ that Christians in Germany live "under thc shadow of persecution and gross misrepresenta¬ tion" and that events in that country leave "uo possible ground for doubt as to thc hostility of the present govern¬ ment to the life, the teaching and the infhicnce of the Christian Church" was prompted by the news from Ber¬ lin that the German government had forbidden the* Evangelical Church delegates to attend the World Con¬ ference on Church, State and Society iu Oxford, England, on July 12, Thc conference is to be held under the, auspices of the Universal Christian Council for Life and Worh, of which thc Federal Council is thc American section.
Dr. MacFarland'.s letter recalled that he had written a book in 1034 urging American Christians to sus¬ pend judgment on Hitler because^ of Der Fuehrer's promises to htm wilh regard to thc Christian churches and thc Jcwsj cited his long correspond¬ ence with thc Nazi chieftain and his consistent friendship for an under¬ standing of Nazi Germany and then accused Hitler of deliberately break¬ ing his promises. He charged Hitler with wrecking Germany's Christian ideals, instilling racial hatred in the hearts of children, permitting the Jews to be harassed and despoiled "without thc slightest appearance of mercy, even reminding one of the infamous edict of Herod in stretching the hand of violence to the littlest child," of "forfeiting the respect of thc civilized world" and "leading your adopted na¬ tion to an abyss, for you cannot build an enduring nation upgn force and hate."

It has never failed when called upon to alleviate the wants of the poor and needy or to assuage tlie grief of dist^es^>cd brethren abroad. And so it goes without saying that the current campaign of the United Jewish Fund of Colunibu.s will go over with a bang. As was announced in these colunms last week, tbe Columbus minimum quota is $45,000, with the hope of raising $50,000. Up to date $41,000 has been raised, leaving a bal¬ ance of $4,000 to be secured hy June 25th.

Zionist Convention to Be
Mass Demonstration of
Jewish Unity
NEW YORK (WNS)—Thc 40th annual convention of thc Zionist Or¬ ganization of America will vigorously protest against the proposed partition or cantonization of Palestine, which are said to be jncluded in the reconi- mciidatlons of the Uoyal Commission, it was announced by Dr. Stephen S. \v'ise, president. He said that thc New York convention, which ope^s on June 2Gth and will be climaxed by a mass meeting at Carnegie Hall on Tuesday evening, June 2Hth, "must be more than a routine demonstration uf our faith in the upbuilding of the Jewish National Home. If injustice is to be averted and if we arc to do anything adequate to enable Palestine to meet in large measure the demands for colonization voiced by thc Jews in Europe, we in America must be prepared to present , a united front. Only in this way can we derive full benefit from the deep and sincere concern which the United States govr ernment has expressed on successive occasions iij the fulfillment of that ob¬ jective approved by both Houses of Congress in the Lodge-Fish resolution of 1923, I have every reason to be¬ lieve that our 40th anniversary con¬ vention in New York will be an over¬ whelming demonstration of an un¬ yielding opposition to the impairment of our rights in Pjilestine."
Herculean Labors
Chronicle rcailers know of the her¬ culean labors of the Joint Distribu¬ tion Committee in coping witli the mnltifarious problems of our suffer¬ ing brethren abroad. They realire how thi.s exemplary body has kept un¬ told thousands from starvation and assisted them in all their efforts at self-help. Suffice it lo say that with¬ out thc loyalty and devotion of thc J. D. C, the tragedies in the Jewish communities abroad would be Inde¬ scribable. The men who have been guiding the destinies of the J. D. C. have wrought beautifully; they have performed their tasks in such a man¬ ner as to elicit thc support and co¬ operation of every Jew worthy of the name "Son of Israel." They have given all of us an example worthy of emulation.-- Through-their undovi- atiiiR loyalty to the Jewish precept of "Zedakah" they have lightened thc burdens of our sore-stricken coreli¬ gionists. Let us stand by them and hold up their hands. It is a duty which we dare not shirk.
Rehabilitation of thc Holy Land
The great work of reh^ilitating thc Holy Land must also proceed. As self-respecting descendants of Abra¬ ham, Isaac, and Jacob we must help thc doughty men and women who have risked their all to bring new life into the dry bones of thc ancient land of our fathers. Any Jew who has seen wilh his own eyes the achieve¬ ments of our Chalutzim in Palestine does not need any further urging to dig down and do his part in the present effort of the United Jewish Fund of Cohimbus. After all, Pales¬ tine today is the only place in thc world where the Jew may still enter to rebuild his shattered life.
As was declared last week in New York by a great merchant prince of the metropolis, how can we in this land of plenty and security sleep at night? How can we enjoy any peace until we have extended a helping hand to those who lie beaten and bruised by poverty and injustice? How can wc love our own cln'hlrcn without feeling a flann'ng passion for the little ones left to wade through the muck and mire of their horrible destiny?

Cry Should Kc Heeded
Thc men at the helm of tho United Jewish Fund of Columlius are firmly convinced that the cry of a suffering Jew should be heeded no matter where he lives or to what group he belongs. Every loLal Jew should act accordingly'. This is no time to di^ vide on questions of Zionism or anti-^ Zioni.sm, Orthodoxy or Reform; for thc welf'arc of thc whole Iiouse of Israel is at stake. I
If Jews and Judaism are to be prcJ- served, 'we must all act in unison and harmony when confronted by oui foes, Our enemies today may be found in every section of the civilizc4 world. They would relish seeing us humiliated and destroyed. For years it has been their aim and purpose tn bring about our dissolution and disintegration. Unless wc stand u|V for our own rights wherever they arc infringed upon and battle for all th4 things' wc hold'"dcar;~thcsc enemies of ours may prove successful. We dare not remain indifferent at this hour which is a turning point in our history.

NEW YOUK (WNS)—Over oO,- 000 of the nation's Protestant, Cath¬ olic aud Jewish clergymen have signed a statement reaffirming the American principle of civil and religious free¬ dom which was submitted to them last January by the National Conference of Jews and Christians, it was an¬ nounced here by Dr. Everett R. Clinchy, director of the Conference. Made public simultaneously in several thousand American communities, thc pronouncement is designed to serve. as a. backfire against the spread in the United States of anti-Semitic, anti - Catliolic and anti - Protestant propaganda and to encourage a de¬ termination on the part of chizens everywhere to resist such un-Amer¬ ican and divisive propaganda.
The text of the statement follows: "The United States of America is dedicated to the truth that all men are 'endowed by their Creiitor with cer^in inalienable rights, that among these
are life, liberty and the pursuit of happines.s'. Civil liberties and reli¬ gious rights that derive from this, truth, are today being assailed. We of; the Protestant, Catholic and Jewish, faiths therefore, believing that these: liberties and rights are based upon the principles of religion ;ind are de-' pendent for their; perpetuation upon: the cultivation of those principles,' affirm oiir loyalty to these fundamen-; tals of all just government, and ex-' press our confidence in the traditions of American life that have chani-< pioned and, applied them. In Amerlcai we have and must maintain a land i wherein people of different religious^ convictions and contrasting cultural! traditions may live together in amity' and mutual respect. The nation c^n) rely upon the mobilized spiritual; forces of Catholics, Protestants and; Jews to support and defend this truly! American ideal."

NEW YORK (WNS)—Diplomatic intervention by all democratic govern¬ ments, including the United States, to comi>el Poland to safeguard the rights of the Jewish minority in her terri¬ tory was urged by Supreme Court Justice William T. Collins in an ad¬ dress at the banquet session of the '20th annual convention of the Federa¬ tion of Polish Jews in America. Re¬ calling thc eiforts of the late Louis* Marshall to include in the constitution of Poland a clause guaranteeing equal rights for all nationalities within her borders, and emphasi?:ing that Poland 'accepted the sacred provisions of this contract as a condition of her 're¬ creation" Justice Collins declared: It behooves all people who stand for democracy, it behooves all govern¬ ments that claim to be democratic, to exercise e\ery lawful and legitimate measure to compel Poland to recog¬ nize her .obligations to thc minority groups within her horders in accord¬ ance with thu Minorities Treaty slu signed at thc Peace Conference of iOin." After citing precedcntti \\\ which the United States intervened hi behalf of iKrsecuted Jews abroad, thc New York jurist said that "if Poland is honest and smcere and ca¬ pable of self-government she must rec¬ ognize her obligations to all her citi¬ zens. 'American Protestantism Brands Hitler Foe of ^ Christianity NKW VORK (WNS)—Ilitlcr and tlic Na/i regime were l)raiided foes ot Lhrlstianity by organized Proles- tanti-,ni in tlie United States when the i'ederal Council of Churches of Clirist, representing 'l\\ national Prot¬ estant deiioininations, made public a resolution adopted by its executive council vi'hich charged the Third Reich with definite hostility to tlie Chris¬ tian religion. .\t the same time thc Cnuiicirs secretary emeritus. Dr. He charged Hitler with wrecking Germany's Christian ideals, instilling racial hatred in the hearts of children, permitting the Jews to be harassed and despoiled "without thc slightest appearance of mercy, even reminding one of the infamous edict of Herod in stretching the hand of violence to the littlest child" of "forfeiting the respect of thc civilized world" and "leading your adopted na¬ tion to an abyss, for you cannot build an enduring nation upgn force and hate." As was announced in these colunms last week, tbe Columbus minimum quota is $45,000, with the hope of raising $50,000. Up to date $41,000 has been raised, leaving a bal¬ ance of $4,000 to be secured hy June 25th. Zionist Convention to Be Mass Demonstration of Jewish Unity NEW YORK (WNS)—Thc 40th annual convention of thc Zionist Or¬ ganization of America will vigorously protest against the proposed partition or cantonization of Palestine, which are said to be jncluded in the reconi- mciidatlons of the Uoyal Commission, it was announced by Dr. Only in this way can we derive full benefit from the deep and sincere concern which the United States govr ernment has expressed on successive occasions iij the fulfillment of that ob¬ jective approved by both Houses of Congress in the Lodge-Fish resolution of 1923, I have every reason to be¬ lieve that our 40th anniversary con¬ vention in New York will be an over¬ whelming demonstration of an un¬ yielding opposition to the impairment of our rights in Pjilestine." Herculean Labors Chronicle rcailers know of the her¬ culean labors of the Joint Distribu¬ tion Committee in coping witli the mnltifarious problems of our suffer¬ ing brethren abroad. Rehabilitation of thc Holy Land The great work of reh^ilitating thc Holy Land must also proceed. Cry Should Kc Heeded Thc men at the helm of tho United Jewish Fund of Columlius are firmly convinced that the cry of a suffering Jew should be heeded no matter where he lives or to what group he belongs. Every loLal Jew should act accordingly'. This is no time to di^ vide on questions of Zionism or anti-^ Zioni.sm, Orthodoxy or Reform; for thc welf'arc of thc whole Iiouse of Israel is at stake. I If Jews and Judaism are to be prcJ- served, 'we must all act in unison and harmony when confronted by oui foes, Our enemies today may be found in every section of the civilizc4 world. They would relish seeing us humiliated and destroyed. For years it has been their aim and purpose tn bring about our dissolution and disintegration. Unless wc stand u V for our own rights wherever they arc infringed upon and battle for all th4 things' wc hold'"dcar;~thcsc enemies of ours may prove successful. The text of the statement follows: "The United States of America is dedicated to the truth that all men are 'endowed by their Creiitor with cer^in inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happines.s'. American ideal." |
