Jewish college undergraduates in America arc in urgent need of social and religious organization because thc 5!H chapters of local and national social and professional Jewish fra¬ ternities in 155 colleges serve approxi¬ mately 18,000 of the 10.1,000 Jewish college students while the 113 reli- ligioub, cultural, student congregation and student club groups arc locatca in only 05 colleges out of thc 2ii'J which have Q'> Jewish students or more, it is declared by Dr. Lee J. Lcvingcr, director of the B'nai B'rith Hillcl Foundation Research Bureau, in an article in thc May| issue of thc B'nai B'rith Magazine. Reporting that 0-1,000 of the 105,000 Jewish stu¬ dents arc concentrated in 113 schools, each of which lias 100 or more, while the remaining 11,000 are spread tlirough 720 colleges, Dr. Levinger's survey reveals that of these 11,000, 7,.'i00 attend 149 institutions, in groups of 25 to 100 in each, while thc other 3,500 are in 580 schools in groups of less than 25 each.
Existing Jewish cultural, social and religious student groups are concen¬ trated in the large universities located in typical small college towns, while colleges, in thc metropolitan centers,^ despite their large Jewish populations, are often withotit sufficient social" or¬ ganizations for Jews, he said. Citing the "particular lack of religious ana cultural Jewish organizations in schools which have from 25 to 500 Jewish students," Dr. Levinger said 'altogether, fully 10,000 Jewish stu¬ dents in such schools have no Jewish opportunities while pursuing theii education away fropi home. Twenty- seven colleges reported definitely that they ha\e no Jewish organization of any kiiid, cither religious, cultural or social. From 20 to 25 percent of all the colleges which have 2a Jewish students or more do not have Jewisii service of any kind, religious or social."

"Our days are darkened by wide¬ spread acceptance in many lands of false and vindictive doctrines of hate, oppression and even extinction of minorities. When the chief executive of thc greatest of democracies, in suph times as these, repeatedly and unmis¬ takably affirms the right of free thought, free speech, free wOrship and repeatedly and unmistakably de¬ nounces intolerance aud bigotry in all places and in all forms, a great serv¬ ice is rendered all humanity, Of this service Jewry is the first but not the last or only beneficiary. Minorities everywhere throughout all time will have ciluse to remember that service with gratitude. And every individual is at some time in thc minority. ^
"Mindful of the transcendent im¬ portance of that service and that the sincerity of his heartening vindication of good will and human rights is at¬ tested by consistent conduct and prac¬ tice in his public and private life, the Trustees of the Richard J.
