ca. atid^in the; weekly columns of the Chronicle.' However, ; coming from one but of the faith Ejid'from a former official of the German Reich, his message was most ef¬ fective and wos well- received by the audience.
The Chronicle is of the ojjinion that the lectures of Gerhart Soger should be heard by every non- Jewish group in America. -The B'nai B'rith, American Jewish Committee and every representa¬ tive body of our peoplo should see, to it that many other able speak¬ ers oro engaged for the wider dis¬ semination of the truth about Nazi barbarism;
Millions are' being spent today by the Nazi gOYernment'f or propa¬ ganda in this country. There is not a day that passes when the Chron¬ icle-does not receive Nazis news¬ paper's," circulars and pamphlets which are being sent- thru TJ. S, mails. We ask the question, what are wo Jews hero .going to do' about thia menace which is threat¬ ening our security ¦ here ? Are we to ignore it until it's too lato?
Every element of ' our Jewish citizenry in Columbua should stand united today as never before.,We should know that anti-semitism does not differentiate between Reform, Orthodox and Conserva¬ tive Jews. Even those who have tried to desert the .Jewish .faith have not been overlooked. To;Sigr Weisskerz, president of the yTpm- ple Brotherhood and to Mr.'Wil¬ liam Wasserstroin, president of Zion Lodge, should go a great deal of credit for having sponsored such good will meeting among ouv own peoplo in which members of every house of worship and Jewish organizations participated. . 'It is this spirit of unity and uni standing that hag given Israel the power of its past and the prom¬ ise of its future.—B. Z. N,

NEW YOEK (WNS)-Just a year and thiee wcelts after he pre¬ cipitated an intei national furor and an exchange of notes between the United States and German govern¬ ments hy colling Hitler a "biown- shirted fanatic who is now menac¬ ing the peace ot the woiId," Moyor La Gunrdio, spet^king before thc fifth annual luncheon of the wo- men'j division of the American Jewish Congress, the same oigani¬ zation before which he uttered his 1937 attack, bioUght tho 1,000 guests to their feet chcojing whon he repeated in substance his pre¬ vious words but without mention¬ ing Hitler by name. Carefully avoiding tho iise of any names but leaving no doubt as to his mean¬ ing, tho Mayor bitterly aasailed Germany's conquest of Ausliia and then went on to say thot "it doesn't take much courage for a mon to take on innocent, elderly, scholarly piofessor out of his home and make hira do menial work." That, La Guardia said, "displays all the traits of a contemptible coward, and the first one to squawk if ony- thing IS said about him." , Recalling that "just one year ago X said there was a menace in Europe," tho Mayor declaicd, "you see that there ia a menace in Euiope today" Ho then pie- dicted that despite "all of the machine guns and oil of the tanks and all of the brute force employed tho enlightened public opinion of 1 the world, wdl aoon crush that menace. I feel that somehow that these conditions cannot endure. The decency of the world revolts against them." After deploring the fact that'"brute force, ar- ^'•ogance, greed, selfishness and brutality have taken the place of international law, reason, kindli¬ ness and neighborliness," the May¬ or said "our country is naturally interested in the oppression of -*litoMa^».*ana Jtald" tribute to Secretary Hull's plan for inter¬ national aid to refugees from Aus¬ tria and Germany. "I'm sure," he said, "that the great message of the great Preaident of the Unit¬ ed States a few days ago made a profound impieaaion on the' chancelleries of Europe. At leaat there ia one land that says "shame, shame, on your outrageous con¬ duct!"
Mrs. Canle Chapman Catt, vet¬ eran crusader for women's rights, alao stirred the gathering by pro¬ posing that the United States send a fleet of warships to bring to this country some of the-refugees for¬ ced to leave their homes in Ger¬ many and Austria and that on the trip to Europe the warships ean'y those Germans in this country who prefer Hitlerism. Mia. Cott sug¬ gested in all seriousness to "nd- veitise far and vvide that this country can accommodate a fixed number of Jews, Catholics and Protestants if there is need, and that she oHeis free transportation to this number. Let tho bonds play ond the flags fly Tvhpn the battleships como ond go on this errand of mercy. The ships need not go empty across tho -Atlantic. Adveitiae widely and smartly from ocean to ocean in order to find those Germans who, according to Adolf Hitler, *hava beefa captured by tho idea of a community of the German people,' and offer thera all a free passage of retum to the fatherland.
"The only reservations would bc, fiist, no passport to retum, and, second, the same financial condi¬ tions tho Germans have fixed for the deporting Jewa; that is, the major portion of property and bank accounts ¦ of departing Germans would be retained. The funds so procUrpd would apply on the costs of' transportation. Such a plan would giva happiness to a great number of people and it would be a most commendable ,act of the only nation in the world whose speciality has been freedom for the oppressed.'' Other speakers were Dr. Joachim Prinz, Dr.' Ste¬ phen S. Wise, William E. Dodd, Jr., Mrs. Gifford Pinchot,, Miss Mory Anderson, (lirsctor of the Federal Women's Bureau, and Mrs. Stephen S. Wise. Tho latter announced that the women's divi¬ sion would shortly open another home for refugeea like tho one es¬ tablished in 1935. The luncheon raised ?20,000 for the refugees.
CHICAGO (WNS)—A frontal attack on tho German-American Bund, o warning thnt Fascism is a real threat to American insLi- futions and a reminder to Ameri¬ can minorities not to bo trapped into supporting foes of democracy under the illusion that they are theicby purchasing protection for themselves -vveie the keynotes pf an addreas, by Secretary of the Interior Harlod L, Ickes at a dfn- ncr in the Hotel Shennan cele¬ brating tho 50th anniversary of the Chicago Jewish Courier, Yid¬ dish daily. Although he did noti mention the Bund by name ho left no doubt as to his meaning when he challenged "thoso who traitoi- ously entertain the belief that the forswearing of allegiance to a foreign ndcr still leaves thera sub¬ ject to tho tyrannical demands of an alien govemment." Ho declar¬ ed that "an American cannot con¬ sistently parade in tho_ uniform Of a foieign po^ver" and "cannot con¬ sistently adhere to a secret nation¬ alistic organization whose politi¬ cal eyes are turned back longingly to an alien land."
America, Secietary Ickes aaid, "does not want this kind of citi¬ zens. It wants men, who when they take the oath of allegiance to tho -Ajnerican flaiL really mean what they say; and iiien who- will not foreswear themselves; men who will not conspire or combine to betray tho -hospitality of the country that they have choaen for [their new home; men who would scorn to undermine the inatitu-
Ickcs warned minority groups in America to resist the "subtle pres¬ sures" that ato "constantly cx- eited by those whoso special econo¬ mic interests appear at tho time to be similar, to array themselves, not with, but against thoso who are atiuggling to preserve demo¬ cracy." He also recalled thttt thoso -nho financed Fascism a- bioad "persuaded themselves to tho self-deception that the intol¬ erance of tyinnnical power was really not aimed at; ond certainly would not bo dliected against, them but only against so-cnlled enemies of law and order."
Cautioning minorities to be alert to the "danger implicit in Fas¬ cism," which he described as on engine of two cylinders, one 'powered by the illusion, thnt wdl pi ove to be transitory, of greater economic security, of a higher de¬ gree of social justice, of more widespread personal happiness," and the other run "on hate—rac¬ ial hato, religious hate, hate of a minority gioup," Mr. Ickes pre¬ dicted that Fascism, "if it should ever become established in this country would hove not only its Jowish devil," but would havo "its Negro devil, its Catholic devil, to say nothing of an asserted va,riety of other devils, foshioned out of different nationalities or rehgious groups that had tome to our shorea to seek peace and freedom." If he were a Jew, Secretary Ickes soid, ho "would loae no time in making ray position clear on the issue of democracy vs- absolut-
tions of their odopted land. Ameri- j ism," wpuld "do my utmost to ca cannot spare even a square foot 1 purify and keep clear "the sources of its precious soil for the mili- j ttt democratic power in this coun- tary training of aliens who have t try so that no one, because of not yet cut the umbilical cord that corruption and fraud in our civil united them to the land of their processes, could find ony justifica- birth, America cannot spare even

Charging that Fascism "is a leal threat to our inatitutions" and that it is "incidiously boring today from within the templo of our liberties," Mr. Ickes said "the urgent^and the unpoatponable dutjr of every Amencan who loves liberty is not only to let the light of reason guard him from within against this treacherous foe, but to join -with others in resisting it fiom without." Reminding his audience that "many now suffering in other lands from tho opprea- sions of dictators fooliahly believed that they could protect themselvca by. giving financial support to the foes of democracy," Secretary

And, he con¬ tinued, "what I would do if I wero a Jew I propose to continue to, do as an American who belongs to the majority group."
Eecalling that "one of the proud¬ est traditions of our America is that its gates have always stood wide open to tho politically op¬ pressed from all parts of tha world," he asserted that "the re- dedication by President Eofsevelt and Secretary Hull of America as a refugee for those who can no longer endure the heavy hond of a tyrannical dictator at hpme or of a ruthless invader from beyond the border, is as fine and noble os it is typically American.

VIENNA (WNS)— This Nazl- dorainated city presented the strange spectacle of war heroes doing menial labor in tho streets under tho watchful eyes of armed storm troopers as scores of Jemsh war veterans, conscripted for street ond seWer cleaning, donned their uniforms and bedecked them¬ selves in medals won for bravery during the World War. In so do¬ ing they were emulating tho ex¬ ample of General Emil Soramer, who shamed the Nazis into free¬ ing him from menial service when he presented himself in his'gen¬ eral's uniform and medals. But unlike Somraer, his comrades were less fortunate for the Nazis show¬ ed no sign of relenting. Through¬ out the city Jews, including women, continued to be ihipresaed for street cleaning.
There has been no falling »if ih the number of Jews arrested, prominent newcomers taken into custody being tho two daughters of Prof. Heinrich Neuman, the nose, throat and ear specialist, who was recently released; Felix Salten, the author; Sigmund Strauss, engineer; and Chief Eabbi llerzog of Graz.
Woril-of-mouth reports by ter ror-atricken refugees arriving here from the provinces tell of a veri¬ table reign of ten-or against Jaws in the small towns. Ono inforaiant declared that the entiro Jewiah population of 18 municipalities was expelled and their property con¬ fiscated. It was also reported that the Nazia havo confiscated tho en¬ tire library and all the manuscripts of Professor Sigmund Freud. He Is sold to be tremeiidoualy excit¬

Tha only exemptions are lawyers who are war veterans or sons of vet¬ erans and lawyers licensed before 1914. Latest victims of the pro¬ cess of Aryanizing Jeivish buainess establishments wera tho lamp fac¬ tory of the lata Johann Kremenot- zky.'a friend of Theodor Herzl, and the Albert Pregnan electrical firm. The Vienna branch of tho Palestino Buieau has been shifted to Berlin where it will be merged with the Berlin oflice. - A wave of mixed marriages is rising in anticipation, of the early -introduction- -of the Nuremberg, racial laws. Tho rahinate is swamped ' by , Jowish-Christian couples seeking to be married be¬ foro such unions lire outlawed. At tlio same tirao many govern¬ ment officials with Jemsh wives have instituted divorce proceed¬ ings. , '
