BERLIN (WNS)—Pear of panic-like proportions gripped Ger¬ man Jewry when it became known that the secret police had rounded up an undetermined number of Jews in a series of maas arrests throughout Berlin. The number taken' in custody is estimated at anywhere from 300 to 2;B00. No reason 'has been given for the ar¬ rests which were made quietly and not reported in the press. The roundup was earned out with tho same efficiency that marked the arreat of thousands of Jews in Vienna three weeks ago. Similar raids are said to have taken place in other German cities. One report stated that the arrests were part of a new plan to force Jews to' speed up emigration. In conflrnia. tion of this explanation observers pointed to the fact that many of theao arrested in Vienna had been released upon a written promise to leave Austria and never return. Similar pledges are aaid to have been exacted from many Jewa in Germany. Meanwhile the ministry of eco¬ nomics lett no doubt that the de¬ cree providing for the regiatrayon by June SOth of all Jewish-owned property applies with equal forco to foreign Jew's, Americans in¬ cluded, wljen it distributed four- page blank registration forma explicitly provide for registration of property owned by foreign Jews. Instructions for filling out the blanks are contained in a two-page enclosure which provides for the registration not only of property valued at more than $2,000 but also of furniture, Jewolcry, trade¬ marks, protected and unprotected inventions, secret processca, and copyrights. In paragraph aix of the instructions it ia declared that "jews of German nationality and those under national status are re¬ quired to register entire domestic and foreign holdings, irrespective pf ivhether theae are exempt from taxation. Jews of foreign national¬ ity must register and evalue that part of their property held witfiin Germany." Tho only specific ex¬ emptions aro "portable objects hi- tended exclusively foe personal use" and "household (,'ooda which are not objecta of luxury." The in¬ structions also contfin a broad .definition of the term "Jew" for tho purposes of the decree. ¦ wm H-ATioHAii aotinnB.-ssiai{, (Tlie foUowinpr article was - last week Jn tlie Ohio Amerlcin XiPwlon Ncwn wlilch rcaclie-^ ! A similar artlfle will ajipt-ar in nf\t montli'D Issue of the National American Ijeglon montlily.—KcUtor'.H Note) In the last year or two the American people havo heard hund¬ reds of speeches and read millions of words making out a case against 'Communism, Nazism aud Fascism. These are alien Lsms which we are againat, militantly and uncompromisingly. There are no '*Ifs", "ands" or "huts" about it- We're agin 'cm. And of course we're for democracy. That goer, without saying. But arc we doing anything about democracy besides just being "for" it? Democracy is not a blessing that ean bo bestowed upon a people to havet and to hold, now and forever. It isn't something tangible that you can wrap up or store away for protection. It's Bometbing that-.has to be made to work. Thc fathers of America worked hard at the democratic system they created ahd then bequeathed it to But, like the profligate aon who squanders the family inheri¬ tance without a second thought as to how it was earned, we have been inclined to forget how we won democracy. It came to us the hard way, by flgliting for it. Eighteenth century Americans worked for It. Nineteenth cen.ury Americans enjoyed it, And now, like the proverbial third generation that has to start all over again, we of the Twentieth century must go back to our shirtsleeves and do something about democracy be¬ sides getting sentimental and emotional about it. It waa all right for us to re¬ gard democracy complacently wheh there was no active com¬ petition from any other theory of government. But today we find our¬ selves in a world in whieh Com¬ munism, Nazism and Fascism as well as other strange isms are being actively promoted by fana¬ tics whose zeal for their cauae makes them ready to do anything and everything for their ism. But are wo who speak so glowingly ot democracy and get so wrought up about the alien isms, are we burn¬ ing with zeal for our coU',e, for our ism? Do we gel fighting mad when wo hoar someone even men¬ tion the possibility of somo other form of government for America'; It all boils down to the fad that in ouv championing of dem¬ ocracy we take a negative atti¬ tude. We are against Commuuisin, Nazism ani' Fascism. . We get plenty excited about the-. But for democracy? We are against foreign isms, hut are we for tlie isms that aro part and paicol of democracy? To put it anotlicr way, wbat isms aro -ve for? That littlo word haa a bad reputation, but the fact Is that theio are plenty of good isms, isms v/hicii every American can chrtnipion ¦wholeheartedly. Let's have a look at seme of them. As againat Communism, Naz¬ ism and Fascism we aro for Americanism, Americanism means patriotism nnd patriotism is the higlie.st attribute of citizenship. Against atheism and paganism, cardinal tenets In th^ Ideology of tho alien isms, we act Protestant¬ ism, Catholicism and Judaism. These isms of religion arc the an¬ tithesis of the isihs that seek to destroy faith, family and fire- aide. In opposition to fanaticism Americans offer liberalism, fra- tcrnalism and idealism, three more isms that are characteristic of democracy. Where the alien isms advocate Mar.^iam, Socialism and totalitarianism, wc who believe in -A-mericanlsm advocate and insist upon capitalism. As against thc racialism, anti-Scmitism, dnti- Gatholicism and anti-Protestant¬ ism of tho dictatorships wc point to the toleration-ism that is part of tho American tradition. These aro some of the isms we can be for as against the alien isms we oppose. No rnco waa ever won simply by being against the other fellow winning. The winner hag to be consumed with the de¬ sire to win liimaclf. And so it is with democracy instead of dis¬ sipating our energiea simply with being against, something else. Tiue, wo muat bo zealous and militant in combating Commun¬ ism, Naziiim, Fascism and other isma tiiat tiireaten our form of government, but let us not fo.- gfit to be equally zealous and militant in promoting and chani- form of govcrunient—Americnn- pioning the isms that 'bolster our ism, • patriotism. , Catholicism, Priitcjtantism, Judaism, liberal¬ ism, fratcrnulibin, IdcalLsm, capi^ tallsin and toleratinn-ism. Fuller, Arkansas Democrat, was rebuked on the floor of the Housa by'three of his Colleagues for injecting a racial issue into the debate on House Joint Resolution 683 to pro¬ vide for an additional tax on whis¬ key.
