NEW YORK (WNS)—Without mentidning the American Jowish Congiess hy name, the American Jewiah Committeo officially regis¬ tered its opposition to and nnn- paiticipation in the Congress's forthcoming refeiendum and elec¬ tion in a statement declaring that tho Committee "disavows and dis¬ sociates itself from the proposed election and ao-called referendum recently announced by one of the many organizations consisting of Americans who ai'o Jewa." The statement continued as follows:
"Tiuthfully and accurately to re¬ flect the opinion of a large body of Americans who are Jews, and who aro not membeis of the or- ganistation conducting the referen¬ dum, the American Jewish'Commit- teo makes this atatement. The Committee places itself squarely on record, with all other right- thinking Americans, in defense of all fundamental human rights. The Committee pledges itself to fight anti-Semitism shoulder to shoulder with all other elements of our population—Americans who are Jews, and Americana who arc not—in the belief that an attack on any bnman rights is 'an attack on democratic principles in gener¬ al, affecting all of us. The Com¬ mittee, however, takes firm and uncompromising stand against any attempt to make of Americans 'who are Jews a distinct political unit. Americans who are Jews, like all other Ameiicans, are above all else, individuals. They fall{ natu¬ rally, into ove^ line of interest and activity—social, philanthropic, educational, economic and political. Any contrary impreaBion is false.
