NEW YORK:—Although more than 47 per cent of the Jewish physicians in the United States practice in New York State, with the biilk concentrated on the Atlantic seaboard between Baltimore and Boston, there are more than 400 communities in the country with a population of 10,000 or more which have no Jewish physicians, according to a preliminary survey ot the Medical Committee on Research released By the Conference on Jewish Relations.
The survey, whicli appears in the July issue of the Jewish Social Studies, a quarterly jour¬ nal published by the Confer¬ ence, represents some of the findings of a committee which has been engaged for the past three: years in a study ot Jews in medicine in the United States. Dr. Jacob A. Goldberg is secre¬ tary of the comrjiittee, whose members include Drs. A. A. Brill, Aaron Brown, Reuben !•. Kahn, A. J. Hongy, Kaufman Schlivek, I. S. Wechsler and Reuben Ottenberg.
The Increase In Jewish physi¬ cians in ten major cities (New York, Cliicago, Philadelphia, L.0S Angeles, Boston, Detroit, Cincinnati, St. Louis and New Orleans) since 1899, the survey discloses, parallels the increase in the Jewisli population of this counti'y since that year. "It is ot significance to note," accord¬ ing to the report, "that .lewish physicians practicing in New York City in 1936 graduated from 97 medical schools in the United States, 8 in Canada and 77 European medical schools. Mr. Friedland was active on the national executive commit¬ tee of the Zionist Organization of America.    He was the most Intimate friend of Dr. Solomon Goldman, president of the Zion¬ ist Organization,   of    America, and both collaborated in writ¬ ing text-books and anthologies. The  author  of   hundreds   of Hebrew short stories for adults as well as children, Mr. Fried¬ land was undoubtedly the most widely read Hebrew author in Hebrew schools not only in this country but also In all English- speaking   countries   throughout the world.
Surviving Mr. Fritdlafj^ are his wife, Yonina; a daughtijr, Avlva, the wife ot Babbi David Polish, newly-selected director ot the Hiilel Foundation at Cor¬ nell University; his mother, who resides in Palestine; a brother and a sister.

Mr. Mghsky explained that in buying these   Jewish   National Fund riotes, the B'nar B'rith was manifesting once again Its <Je- sire to aid the Jewish National  , Fund   in what' liow   is a very necessary project,  juat as  the B'nai B'rith did previously, in 1936, manifest its support of the Jewish National Fund program through the pledge of $100,000 to the  Fund for the purchase . by B'nal B'rith of an area of 4,000 dunams (1,000 acres) near Beth  Alpha, where  nearly  100 refugee    families    are   already settled in B'nai B'rith-Alfred M. Cohen Colony.
Amortized for five yeara, the debenture notes pay 4% inter¬ est, payable semi-annually. Undertaken in re.sponse to an urgent request made by Dr. Chaim Weizmann, President of the World Zioni<!t Organization, Menahem M. Ussishfcin, Presi¬ dent ot the Jewish National Fund, and American Zionist leaders who participated in the London conference convoked by the British Government prior to the Issuance of the White Paper, the $1,000,000 loan will enable the J. N. F. to redeem imme¬ diately 100,000 dunams (25,000 acres) of land.
More than half of the loan has already been subscribed. Next to Hadassah's $75,000 subscrip¬ tion, B'nai B'rith's is the largest to date. ,
