American Zion¬ ist' of flclals said, that "disturb¬ ing" reports that Great Britain is "seriously considering" the establishment of an independent Arab State giving the Jewish population a permanent minor- ity status," prompted the Sena¬ tors to emphasize their concern that the policy of Palestine be unchanged. But if the halt- million Jews now living in Pales¬ tine say 'No, we will not cooper¬ ate in the making of'an inde¬ pendent in Palestine State,' there will be no independent Pales¬ tine state.". Rabbl Wise reiterated the thought that government comes only from the consent of the governed when he drew a paral¬ lel between the present situa¬ tion and that existing in the American colonies 160 years ago when Britain enacted stamp, laws to tax tho colonial pif;'^' eors. These laws, he Bald, covi«v, jLot ba entorcud, JivcauacjlhR ~ coKhfflts did ilot v/ant thom en¬ forced, and the Independence of America resulted. "I thinlc England understands this situa¬ tion," he declared, but he added that Great Britain's position was a most difficult one with the shadow of -war hovering con¬ stantly over the land. "I may not like what his Majesty's Govern¬ ment may .decide to do with Pal¬ estine, yet at the same time I cannot forget that tomorrow— or the next day—-England, as the -world's great democracy, may be called, upon to stand In the trenches as the defender ot all that is democratic in the world.
