Did you know that in the effort to take the curse off German police dogs they are now euphemistically called Alsatian shepherds? All of which doesn't change the fact ¦ that when you buy a gen¬ uine representative of this breed you get with It a certifi¬ cate from its trainer stating that said trainer solemnly swears that he is a full-blooded "Aryan" with no percentage whatsoever of Jewish blood . . . It seems that in Nazlland the ruling is that a dog, no matter how pure-bred an aristrocrati In its own right, becomes mere mutt if its trainer has a drop of Jewish blood in him . Perhaps those German bike champions weren't Fifth Col- immlsts at all, but were merely meant to serve as good will agents . . . But anyway, so much hullabailoo was raised about their presence and so much sus¬ picion centered about them that the purpose of their visit to, these shores was nullified.. .And so they have been ordered to go back to HItlerland before the month iB over . . . Neal O'Hara wonders why no accounting Is ever made of all the money the Nazis collect at home and among their sympathizers in foreign lands for their famous vrinter relief ... Alleged uprisings of "Jews and OQmmunists" In seized Rou¬ manian territories, reported in government propaganda leases from Berlin, Rome and Bucharest, were branded aE siniitlar to "justifications" ad¬ vanced by the Nazis for their persecutions in the past The statement waa signed by Adelpili Held, chairman, Jewish Labor Committee; Henry Mon¬ sky, president, B'nai B'rith; Sol M. Stroock, chairman. Execu¬ tive Committee, American Jew¬ ish Committee; and Rabbi Ste¬ phen S. Wise, president, Ameri¬ can Jewish Congress. The complete statement reads: "Recent dispatches based on government propaganda releases in Berlin, Rome, and Bucharest, describe what purport to be armed uprisings of "Jews and Communists" In the Roumanian territories of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina which have been amiexed by the Soviet Gov- ettxappti,:J^^e:i>ttlci^^^^ United Jewish Fund Workers Are Determined To Reach Goal By End of the Week Freedom Of Religion Listed By Roosevelt As Essential Of Peace Hii|^|i^^iiiBd.^th,|^uchara3i 'newspSStei:"* (5UHiBli'i!tiir''''l^ve; also piibllshed inflammatory! anti-Jewish articles accusing the 300,000 Jews of the lost area of "excesses" designed to cause in¬ ternal unrest. "This language, published by permission of the Roumanian censor, is familiar to any Ameri can who recalls the 'justlflca tlons' advanced by the Nazis for their persecutions in the past In order to divert the attention of the Roumanian people from the loss of territory to the Sov¬ iet Govenunent, it is apparent that the dominant elements in Bucharest are whipping up a spurious alibi for a deliberately plotted pogrom against Jews. "The Roumanian Government is cooperating with the Nazi Government. The newly form¬ ed totalitarian 'Party of the Na¬ tion,' which bars Jews from membership, is now all power¬ ful. Newly Instituted laws, now applied with redoubled sev¬ erity, ahn at eliminating Rou¬ manian Jewish citizens—some 4% of the population—from the nation's political and economic life. Now, by spreading in¬ spired stories, unconfirmed by any impartial observers, the Nazlfied elements in control at Bucharest are attempting to throw a mask of terror and pogrom over their own short comings. "The reported massacre of 600 Jews in Galati may be followed tiy even more awful slaughter, as the Rotunanian people is whipped up to seek an outlet for despair at seeing their land so brutally partitioned. The smokescreen of 'insurrection, attached to an impoverished weak and poUtlcally helpless group, will not mislead intelli¬ gent Americana." HYDE PARK, N. Y. (WNS) — Declaring that there could be no compromise between the concepts of Democracy and Fas¬ cism, President Roosevelt listed freedom of religion as one of the five essentials of a just and enduring peace. While admitting that talk aljout the elements of peace at this time was academic, the President said that the prescrip¬ tion of a universal peace should be kept in the mind of every citizen. The Chief Executive's five essentials were: (1) Freedom of Information and knowledge, and of the press. Freedom of religion. Freedom of expression. Freedom from fear of attack and threats to ter¬ ritorial integrity. Freedom from want, and the greatest possible cul- .. ,-.:,tura|.aijdi;C9)Mnerclal-litai S{Sftffif|lai?cdi«3e>$w^ :-^ISpetenfe5^*lsiiregiitift5pi^ conference, Mr. Roosevelt warn¬ ed against Ideological fllrtatiori with the "corporate'State," eith¬ er as a sulwtitute for democra¬ tic government or as a medium for competing with totaUtarian efficiency. (2) (3) (4) (5) So urgent is the need of sending immediate aid to the beleagured Jews of Europe and extending help to refugees scattered thruout the world, that the leaders of this year's United Jewish Fund Campaign of Columbus are determin¬ ed to reach their goal by the end of next week. Campaign Chairman Robert W. Schiff is appealing to all workers who have cards in their possession to injmediately work them and return them to the Campaign Headquarters, 150 E. Broad St., in the next few days. However, Fund leaders are hope¬ ful as to the ultimate success of this effort since many pros¬ pects are yet to be contacted. It might be recalled that the quota last year was almost reached at the close of the cam¬ paign, but the leaders of the Drive were not satisfied with a "nearly" finished job and rais¬ ed the money by earnest soUci- tation and widening canvass. This year, as last, the leader¬ ship Is faced with the same prob. lem, but as last year, the de¬ termination to bring Columbus over the top is strong and the success of the added week ot campaign, it Is hoped, will be realized by next week's issue of the Chronicle A special appeal i.s being made to those who have not signed up (heir pledges. It is possible that names have been omitted or cards lost hy the many workers who have given of their time and energy during the past three weeks, and those who have not been seen or ap¬ proached by a campaign worlt- er are asked to call Campaign Headquarters for a worker to see them or mail their pledge and check to the office directly. The United Jewish Fund of¬ fice telephone number is ADams 8647. From the campaign headquar ters the Chronicle learns at press time that the 1940 goal has not as yet been reached Goldberg Memorial Fund Gets Off To A Good Start Sliaw jrou (ppteclatlon lo OliToaldi'i t» yean at unrloa la Columbiu JewUh ConmoBltr by pajr- Iv Tour nbMilpUss a>»-t5.M • year. The announcement last week of a gift by E. J. Schanfarber to launch a Columbus Hebrew School Memorial Fimd, dedicat¬ ed to the memory of the late Abraham Goldberg, its founder, resulted with many contribu¬ tions received by Robert Mell¬ man, treasurer ot the Fund. It is the opinion of the sponsors that no greater tribute could be paid to the deceased leader, who thruout his life was the moving spirit behind daily Jew¬ ish educational institution of our community. It is said that without Mr. Goldberg's un¬ selfish devotion and personal sacrifice in time and money, the school would have long ceased to exist. At present there are approximately 200 children re¬ ceiving a modem Jewish edu¬ cation in this school located at 558 East Rich Street. Those In the Columbus Jew¬ ish community and surrounding towns, who would Uke to con¬ tribute towards this worthy un¬ dertaking, are asked to mall their checks to Robert Mellman, treasurer, 150 East Broad St., Columbus, O. Contributors, who do not de¬ sire to have the amount of their gift recorded, but the name only, should make this request known to the treasurer. Willkie, Republican nominee for President, condemned anti- Semitism as "a possible crim¬ inal movement" and said that any growth of anti-Semitism in the United States would be a calamity. In an exclusive inter¬ view published in The Day, dally Jewish newspaper. Pointing out that he had "clearly asserted" his position against race hatred, bigotry and Hitlerism "long before I ever thought of being a Presidential candidate," Mr. Willkie called for national tolerance and relig¬ ious Uberty lo present a united front to pressing national prob¬ lems. The Republican nominee told The Day: "I consider anti-Semit¬ ism in America as a possible criminal movement and every anti-Semite as a possible traitor to America—that America which is so beloved and so dear to me, that America which has always symboUzed liberty, equaUty and brotherly love among its in¬ habitants. "If anti-Semitism should spread ita roots in the United States as it has done in most of the countries of Europe, then it would definitely be a calam¬ ity tor the United SUtes. It would mean that the main foun¬ dations on which our country has been built are beginning to shake. There might even be fear that the principles for which our forefathers fought and died are in actual danger. "What man with a conscience, what man who knows the suf¬ fering of Israel and what Israel has tried to accomplish and has accomplished in the march ot humanity cannot be tolerant to- tion against race hatred, bigo¬ try and Hitlerism. I did this long before I even thought of being a Presidential candidate I did It solely because I wanted to express my protest against Hitlerism and against' all fascis- tlc persecution methods. "We in America must all stand shoulder to shoulder tor tolerance and religious iibertj. We must ail of us work tor the interest of our country. We ' must think only of what is im¬ portant for the welfare of the United States. "Those who are trying to bring to our shores from Hitler Germany or from similar coun¬ tries their race hatred, their liate ot liberty and democracy— such people are not interested in the welfare of the United States but are serving the dic¬ tates of other countries."
