Thousands of .Jews in Columbus ancl Central Ohio are deeply mourning the passing last Monday of Abraham E. Goldberg, pioneer leacler in orthodox circles here for more P than sixty years. He was 84 years of age and resided ., -with his family at 647 Linwood Ave. sBw '^^^ huge concourse of people from every walk of life
j&a who assembled at the funeral services held at the Agudath ¦ 'i Achim Synagogue and at the cemetery last Tuesday after- ^f noon, was indeed a real tribute to the high esteem in which (Mr. Goldberg was held in the community. The life of the deceased was at all times an example and an inspiration to

For, staunch and ^K- upright as were his noble quaU- -^¦itles of leadership and Idealistic jeadeavors, no less staunch and inS less unbending were his ad- herence to his Jewish beUefs, iJlls loyalty to Jewish causes and 'Ills Ideals of public service to ;^e city he so dearly loved, lenever we think of "Dad" oldberg or whenever his name IS mentioned, we always Unk- ¦ It With deeds, the hundreds, V.'thousands which were "Ited-.tbihlm.,; Not only had .i^se'iiwprjjifor! the loca charij

Most of Mr. Goldberg's time was given to the thoughts and plans to help his fellow men. In spite of his age, neither he.it nor cold, or raging storm could deter this man from action on his missions for those in need. He was the ideal layman, a Jew who understood Judaism and practiced it in his dally life.
In his own home, his children sought and found in him true paternal love In Its highest forms. There would be none who would gainsay the place his family had In his heart and in his every thought. No sacri¬ fice for them was too great; no thought animated him but to give them of his best and to win them to cherish the Ideals for which he so steadfastly stood.
In commuinal Ufe, his guid¬ ance and cooperation were never sought in vain, and in¬ valuable did they prove to the great institutions for which he faithfully and unselfishly labor¬ ed: The Agudath Achim Syna¬ gogue, which he helped to found and lead for some twenty-five years, the Columbus Hebrew School, of which he was honoi> aiy president until his death, Zion Lodge, B'nai B'rith, and other pubUc institutions who availed themselves of his read¬ ily proffered assistance, owe to him a debt which could not easily be discharged. Through¬ out his life Mr. Goldberg re-

mained a believing and observ¬ ing Jew, worshiping regularly in the synagogue, giving gener¬ ously to every worthy cause and at all times bringing honor to the name of tbe Jew by his in tegrity and his uprightness.

To his helpmate, a beloved and respect ed woman in Israel, "Mother" Goldberg, his sons and daugh¬ ters, the community extends its heartfelt sympathy. May the almighty comfort them in their sad bereavement.
The deceased is survived by his wife, Toba; three sons, Isaac L., Harry and Arthur Goldberg; three daughters, Mrs. Anna Reed, Mrs. Sam Brief and Mrs. Harry Cohen of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. D. Slegel and Mrs. M. Goldweber; nine grand- chUdren and three great grand¬ children.

With the plea of hundreds of thousands of homeless and starving men, women and children coming across the seas, and the urgent needs of local and national agencies grow¬ ing day by day, the United Jewish Fund drive for 1940 was officially opened last Thursday night at the Winding Hol¬ low Country Club. The event was without doubt one of the most enthusiastic and responsive turnouts in the his¬ tory of Columbus' Jewish Fund raising efforts. Over half of the desired quota was accounted for at the close of the meeting.
