NEW YORK.—The C(;ntral Relief Committee has issued- an appeal, an¬ nouncing that it is co-operating with the American Jewish Relie'f Commit¬ tee and the- People's Relief Committee under the leadership of David A. Brown in the national appear for !S14,000,000.
The Central Relief Committfee has issued an appeal to the Orthodox Jews ^f America in which it states among, o^her things:
Edwin , 'SCHANFARBEI?
Edwin J. Schahfarber, prominent local lawyer, is leaving Friday, April 7th, on a tour of District Grand Lodge No. 2 over whose destinies he is at present presiding. The purpose of Mr. Schan- farber's tour; which is to take up a month's time, is to make a survey of the activities carried on by the Grand Lodge and to confer with the officers of the different Lodges in the District. He is scheduled to deliver a series of ad¬ dresses in the leading cities of the Mid¬ dle West including KansAs City, St. Louis, Indianapolis, and Denver. It is expected that his visits will stimulate greater activity among all the lodges of Ihe district
Sacred Duty
"It,.is the sacred duty of the Ortho¬ dox Jews in America to participate in tliis\ campaign with their' soul and energy to make tlife drive a success, ¦^he riqh,.'will-'give,- but the, middle-class, Xcwtgr. Siust dlrs&.'give as'ifiocIi^^'a^itKey can, and more.
"The pride of Orthodox Jews is put to the test. Let there be no accusa¬ tion that the Orthodox Jews simply do a lot of talking, whereas others give' material aid. ' Orthodox Jewry must show its brotherly feelings for the Jews in Europe, through deeds ex¬ pressed in money. Let the figures speak for themselves. The total in dollars which will come from Ortho^ dox Jews should be their spokesman. We, American Jewry, ¦ must show that we aro worthy of being the brethren of the martyrs in the war countries.
Religious Instruction
"Through the darkest times, when death hovered oVer their heads, when they were famished, and did not have any clothing ^for their naked bodies, they sent their children to the Hebrew schools. The Central Relief Commit¬ tee has within the last year established a cultural, program to enable the Jews to .give their children religious instruc¬ tion. Will you help them? Will you not help so that Judaism should not be exterminated?
"You must help the campaign; you must organize the synagogue and reach all the Jews in your communi¬ ties that they, too, should help.
The Disgrace
"If you should not do it you will never rid yourselycs of the disgrace. Let every synagogue be turned into a center for the campaign. Let the Jews from the synagogues, in co-operation with other Jews of various rank, go from house to house. No Jew should be omitted—jione passed by.
"To each Jew must be given the op¬ portunity and privilege to help—to in¬ fluence every other Jew to give with a full hand and a good heart." Respectfully, LEON KAMAIKY, Chairman, Central Relief Committee.
Abraliain thy father, and the God Isaac: the land whereon thou liesl, to thee ^Loill I give it, and to thy seed; drtd' thy Iseed shall be as the dust of the earth, dnd thou slialt spread abroad to the' it>cst; and to the aast, aiid to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And, behold. I am loith thee, and will keep thee whither" soever thou goest. and will bring thee' again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I ¦have spoken to thee of.
And Jacob awaked out of his sUept and he said. Surely Jehovah is in this^ place; and I knew it not. And he-Was afraid, and .wd, Jiow dreadful is, this place! this is none other than the Iwuse of God, and this is the gate of'hcavoi... —Genesis. 28:10-17.
