CHILE CONFUSION
That Chilean Con.sul's refusal of a visitor's vl.sa to IVIaurice Schwartz. American Yiddish dramatic star, is simply another tip-off to a most significant condition lo he found in many South American lands . . . Whenever officials nf such coun¬ tries see a passport obviously belonging to a Jew they automat¬ ically refuse lo i.s.sue a visa, whether Immignillon or transit ... If stalistics were published on the number of refugees who, In order lo gel into .some (not all) nf Ihe Latin American countries as settlers or even transients, had to produce cer¬ tificates of baptism, the figures would be practically identical with the number of Jewish refu gees who have entered ihose lantis . . . THIS AND THAT
Did you .see Ihal statement i.s sued not long ago by a group of Japanese anti-Semites? . . . "The Jewish aspiration lo dom¬ inate Ihe world is not absolute¬ ly compatible wilh the spirit of the empire," they proclaimed . . Hut they didn't say "positively'
. . We thought you'd llite lo Icnow that Lloyd's of London, whose business it is to malie no mistakes, are offering lOOO-lo-l odds that Washington, D. C, wlll.neVer.'bejbombed . . , That
m<>yl6s;rtiakfes.:ttaiJwbhilet* iv^^the question, of whether the anti- Nazi films under fire should be considered anti-American isn't submitted to the American pub¬ lic ... It seems to us that ex¬ hibitors all over the country should have offered lo run these films again and lo let the peopi be the judges . . . One thing the Senatorial inquiry has failed h bring out so far, by the way, 1, that the producers of those films knew that some of them could not become box-office sue cesses, but were ready to sacri flee Income for what they view¬ ed us a patriotic duty. CSBKCH AND DOUBLUl-CHECK
In Czechoslovakia, the grape- vino reports, even the kindergar¬ ten tols know what it's all about . . . On'e such youngster, asked by a gestapo Intjulsitor what he was learning, replied: "They teach us lo breathe through our noses and keep our mouths shut" . . . Then there was the Czech movie manager who Im pelled his audience to applaud vociferously when the announce, menl of a coming alracllon was Hashed on the screen . . . "The Great Reich—World Power," was the title of the film, and under¬ neath the manager had added: "For a few days only" . . . Re¬ cent arrivals from Europe In¬ sist that llruno Mussolini's death in an airplane crash wa; the result of an aerial duel the Duce's son fought with a Nazi llier . . . Another rumor has il that Herschel Gryn.szpan, the young Polish Jew who killed a Nazi attache at I'aris three year^ ago, has been killed — while In New Vork the whisper In refu gee circles is that nrynszpan has found asylum on these shores under an alias . . Wt frankly admit that we cun't vouch for either tale . . . COIIIIKCTION

Denounces
Anti-Semitism
NKW YORK {WNS)~A strong condemnation of anti-Semitism as "un-American" and "un¬ christian" was made in a state¬ ment issued hero l)y the execu¬ tive committee of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ. The statement, made public on the eve of the Jewish New Ye;ir, warnG<l that "anti- Semitism is an insidious evil which, if allowed to develop, would poison the springs of our national life"
"Ilocont evidences f)f anti- .Iewish prejudice in oiu" own country compel us to speak again a word of solemn warn¬ ing to the nation." the statement said- "Divisiveness on religious or racial grounds is a portent- uos menace to American democ¬ racy. If one group be made the target of attack today, the same spirit of intolerance may be visited on another group to¬ morrow and the rights and lib¬ erties of every group thus be put in jeopardy.
"We condemn antl-Semttiam as un-American. Our nation is a free fellowship of many racial and cultural stocks. It is our hisfocir giocy that they have been able to live together in mutual respect, each rejoicing in the rich contribution which the others have made to the com¬ mon good Anti-Semitism is an insidious evil which, if allowed to develop, would poison the springs of our national life.
"Kven more sti'ongly we con¬ demn anti-Semitism as un-Chris- lian. As Christians we grate¬ fully arknowledge our ethical and spiritual indebtedness to the people of Israel. No true Christian can be anti-Semilic in thought, word or deed without being untrue to his own Chris¬ tian inheritance."

Vets Wear Medals As "Yellow Badge" Decree Goes Into Effect
STOCKHOLM (WNS)-Jewish war veterans aiJj)earod in the streets of Herlin wearing med¬ als and other decf)rations gain¬ ed as a result of their valor in the first world war as the Nazi order compelling all Jews over the age ctf six in Germany and the Holiemian Protectorate to wear large yellow "mogen da vids" on their street clothing went into effect, according to re¬ ports received here

The Jews in i'oland and in otiu^r Nnzi-occu- piod c^^unt^ies were ordered early in the war to wear yellow badges but the practice has now been inatiluled in Germany it- .fielt.,,._ „ .__,
The Jews were c6mp"elted to buy the six-pointed stars, which are four inches wide and are worn on the left breast of thelrl clothing, from Nazi officials. The cost of the "mogen davld"] was id (jfennings and only one' was sold to each ,lew. I

<;KNEVA {JI»S> — Following' the lead of Hudapest University,! all other Hungarian colleges have adopted a ruling prohtl>ii- Ing the admission of Jews into, their medical schools.
WASHINGTON (WNR) — Failure of the America First Commiitee to repudiate Charles A. Lindbergh's deliberate attack against American Jewry was re¬ garded in political circles here as further evidence that t.he iso¬ lationist forces in the United States, under the leadership of the Hitler-Decorated flyer and Senator Gerald P. Nyo, will at- tempt t o cloak their appoase- ment campaign hy labelling the current war as a "Jewish war."
While protests against Lind- ijcrgh's accusation that the Jews, together with the Roosevelt Ad¬ ministration and the British, were trying to high-pressure the American people into war, con¬ tinued to pour in from all patls of Ihe country, a wide cleavage developed in the ranks of the isolationist groups.
Shocked at the ex-Colonel's clo.so adherence to the Hiller line, scores of individuals and groups, sincerel.v opposed to the countr>'s present foreign policy, re.«igne<I from the America First Committee and denouncefl Lind- liergh's speech in vigorous lang¬ uage which made clear that the American people were not ready to accept Hitler's anti-Semitism even if the "lonely eagle" and his handful of cohorts in the Senate were.

The belief that Lindbergh's speech was meant to be the opening shot in a gigantic anti-

financed from Berlin, was" wide¬ ly accepted here as Senator Nye, in an interview following an ad¬ dress before the Dayton Amer¬ ica First Committee chapter, re¬ pealed the charge that "the Jew¬ ish people are a large factor in our movement toward war,"
In a special dispatch lo the New Itepuiilic, Michael Straight rep(.rted: "The convltlion Is growing in Washington that an organi/.ed campaign of intimlda- lion and terror has been under¬ taken in America against the .lews. It is believed that this campaign is closely directed from Herlin and that participat¬ ing in it, whether conscious of its source or not, are both Fath¬ er Coughlin and the America First Committee,
"IJndbergh's outburst against the Jews at Des Moines on Sept. tlih and the simultaneous open¬ ing (if hearings before the sul> commiitee of the Senate Inter¬ state Commerce Committee in¬ vestigating the motion-picture industry are seen as part of this organized campaign. The basic structure of this anti-Semitic pro-Nazi campaign is a chain of small newspapers and maga¬ zines which have sprung up throughout America and in par¬ ticular ia the Middle West. The articles used in these publica¬ tions resemble closely those printed in foreign language pap¬ ers controlled directly by Adolf Hitler."
That the isolationist leaders would not abandon their anti- Jewish drive, despite the shock¬ ed reaction of the entire coun- trv. was demonstrated when Senator Nye told newsmen: "It is only natural that the Jewish people should be among the leaders in the fight for interven¬ tion The Jewish people have suffered under the Nazi regime and they wish to see the Nazis defeated For the same reason, the Jewish people in thia coun¬ try are among the leaders In the '
