Messrs, Benjamin and Aaron Neustadt, Publishers, Jeivish Chronicle, Columbus, Ohio.
Gentlemen ;
In reply to your request for a few wards regarding your campaign for $52,000, / beg to say the following:
With David A. Brown and James H. Becker in yottr midst, I feel certain that the response of the'Jewish people of Coltmibtts will be most enthusiasHc and generous.
It wilt please me highly to receive a complete report of results,
Signed: Felix M. Warburg.
These refugees, strange as it may seem, desire to return to the spots where their cradles, if they had a cradle, rocked; the spot where their fathers and mothers sleep the last sleep.
Picture to yourselves YOUR lot. You know that you will not be left alone to breathe your last by the roadside. You know that around your bedside will be gathered trained nurses, skilled physicians and, above all, your dear ones. Over there the sick have no physicians.' Epidemics are raging; pestilence is stalking through the concentration camps in which are huddled the more fortunate of them; no hospital for them and theirs.
What is asked of you, of all of us, is very little. Open your purse. Write your check. The lives of these, your brothers and sisters, are in our hands. Upon us depends whether they will live or die.
Will you join the army of the slayers? Will you stand by while they are murdered? Or vvill you help'to restore them to lives of hon¬ orable usefulness ? What will be your answer ?
The Columbus Campaign for Jewish War Sufferers is NOW ON!
Columbus' share of the $14,000,000 to" be raised throughout the Country is $52,000.00.
To secure this amount EVERY Jew must give and give liberally.
There can be no excuse that hard times are upon us, for the poorest of us will not starve to death, nor will we die from- cold, from lack.of food or clothing. The responsibility is yours, it cannot be evaded — either you save them or they die.
COLUMBUS' CAMPAIGN FOR JEWISH WAR SUFFERERS
Signed:
Joseph Schonthal, Honorary Chairman.
Edward J. Goodman, Chairman.
E, J. Schanfarber, Vicc-Chairman.
Simon Lazarus, Treasurer.
Mrs. Lawrence Loewenstein, Chairman Women's Division.
George M. Fenherg, Chairman Licking County Division.
J. WoRLEV, Chairman, Delaware County.
One of the most enthusiastic and inspiring meetings ever held by local Jews took place at the Progress Club, Tuesday evening; March- 23, at 8 :oo o'clock.
The nieeting which was called for the, purpose of launching the great local drive for $52,006 represented every element in the com¬ munity.
Those who attended came to hear accounts of conditions in the devastated regions of Europe, where, hundreds: and thousands"of our coreligionists are starving and suffering most indescribably.
Their 'expectations were fulfilled by David A. Brown of Detroit and James H. Becker of Chicago. From the lips of these two "war- horses" of the mammoth national campaign for $14,000,006 they heard descriptions of eye-Witnesses—^men who had seen the actual conditions in all their -luridness and tragedy—with their own eyes.
¦ The audience was told of the thousands 6f Homeless wanderers;,. of the multitudes of outraged women and girls; of' the filthy ;ramshjickte;, hbspitals' which ' were housing-' those' afiflicte'd - \vitU > divfets • diseases'; Tq^' th'edestrticUo'n'of-.thqUsatxdvofeV^Tft^riii^^Q' 'I^braliS',''^ aiid many'houses.
,-"•''•;''¦''•! • • :
Forced to Beg ;
They were also told- of the many hundreds of families which in ant6- boUws dsjrs Igd,^eji. prosperous and i»^_ "'caiftSoVtab'le cirtuhis"ia'nces' whicji'ifoii?— were forced to beg and live on one meal a day — and what a meager meal at that. The iterrible pogroms were de¬ scribed by James H. Becker who had spoken with men and women who per¬ sonally were witnesses and sufferers from these medieval' perpetrations of criminally-benighted scoundrels, whose chief occupations were murder, rape, and pillage. . The indescribably horrible plight of the little children were de¬ scribed vividly./ Tears' were shed on all sides when Jimmy Becker r«marked that in his many months of work among our suffering coreligionists abroad, he rarely saw a smile on a child's face.
Bodies Are Dwarfed
"Their bodies," he declared, "are dwarfed and emaciated; their nerves are shattered; their homes completely demolished. Many of them have lost their parents in the war and. in divers pogroms which have been breaking out intermittently throughout the Ukraine, Poland, G'alicia, and other devastated regions of Eastern Europe."
